I really don't want to start another thread about overclocking the DS3, but I've read the sticky, gone to other sites and have generally not gotten very far in pushing (overclocking) my system from stock

Goal:
===
Overclock the system mildly without introducing any noise (i.e. non-intel cooler)

System:
======
Gigabyte DS3R F10 Bios v2.0

*** Hit CTRL F1 in BIOS
Set 5-5-5-15 1.8V memory to 4-4-4-15 2.0V
Disabled throttling (C1E/EIST) for overclocking purposes
E6750:
CPU Voltage is 1.35
Intel Stock Fan
Palit 8800GT (overclocks nicely to 650/980 from 600/900). You can even underclock it to reduce temps (49C idle/75-80 Load with RivaTuner fan throttling).

Trials:
1) Set system to AUTO then overclock to 370x8 (2.960Ghz). This is with memory 5-5-5-15 @1.8V. Temps are 47C idle/65C load - very hot! LAN Failed to operate properly until system shut down AND power shut off.
Reported solution: Increase voltage to northbridge?

2) Set 350x8 (2.8GHz)
Volts 1.35
Temps are 47 Idle/60-62 load.
Orthos stable - 10 min
Pi tests - fine

Result was that I left torrent running, but then google desktop got error, then winamp, then a 0x00000 memory error and a BSOD.

3) 338x8 (pathetic overclock):
Stock Volts.
Will see if a small overclock like this will be stable.
Temps are 42 Idle/57 load.

I am bumbling about my overclocks. I really should start at a base line then move the FSB and voltage as required. But I already see temps get high very quickly. Note this is with FAN increasing with temps, which would be my goal with the final overclock.

Is it too early to tell if my C2D will require more voltage (hence more heat and therefore a need for a better cooler)?

Will increasing FSB Volts, PCIe volts by +0.1 help stability? I don't want any damage to my precious GT, or damage any component of my system. As such I'll watch for load temps to not exceed 60C

What's VDroop? While I have 1.35V, CPU-Z reports much lower volts. I don't feel I should up my volts to 1.5 (the max for E6750) just to get the 'proper' voltages.

What is your northbridge temperature reaching? Is your memory running 2.00x (1:1)?

Consider pushing 1.9/2.0v through your memory.

+1 MCH may not be necessary until higher speeds.

To get my 6750 to 3.5 on my P35 DS3R I had to bump CPU voltage to 1.523, memory to 2.3 volts and both MCH and the "other one " I forget what it's called to + .2. Expecting to get that high an overclock on just a hair above default voltage is highly unlikely. To get me stable at 3.5 at those voltages took me a week of tweaking.

Some people get lucky and get huge overclocks on default or barely above default voltage increases, but they are the exception rather than the rule. Overclocking is also affected by your ram timings and voltages, your Power supply, system cooling and airflow and CPU and ram cooling. Northbridges on Intel chipsets get pretty damn hot, some even require active cooling instead of just using the stock heatsink. Also remember no two pieces of hardware overclock the same. Just because Joe Blow got a Gig overclock on stock voltages does'nt mean that Joe Schmo will.

Bill Parishes guide is what I used to get me where I got my 6750 and where I have my Quad currently at, that plus a whole lot of trial and error. Just keep at it and eventually you'll get er dialed in. :D

3.5G would be nice but I definitely need an aftermarket cooler.

I'm starting to get somewhere
4) Setting Now for 2.8Ghz
Updated my INF Drivers (intel)
Updated Realtek (9/07) - sure why not!
Updated Bios to F10 from F9
Set 350x8
New***FSB Voltage +0.1
New***MCH +0.1 (also MCH 0.0)
Readings:
Northbridge temp 42C
Idle 36-40C (CoreTemp)
Load: 58-60C
Note: CPU Fan @ 1.7K RPM (auto mode).

MemTest86 v1.7 passed after 1 1/2 hours.
Orthos tested to be stable for at least 30 minutes.
Ran CRYSIS but 5 minutes into the game, I got the BSOD. Is PCIe +0.1 needed?

If I can solve above, do I keep increasing FSB until I get orthos to fail? If I increase FSB but temps go up, I'll stop. I want to increase FSB without adding voltage. I wonder if at some point i'll have to increase MCH and/or PCIe. My goal is still 375x8 (3GHz).

What is your northbridge temperature reaching? Is your memory running 2.00x (1:1)?

Consider pushing 1.9/2.0v through your memory.

+1 MCH may not be necessary until higher speeds.

Any help here based on above? Do I need to add +0.1 to PCIe? MCH? FSB?? Memory?
RAM is rated 1.9-2.1V. It's set to 2.0. Add 2.1?

At stock, memory is running 5:6 (FSB/DRAM = 333/400).

I updated my BIOS to F10. When I ran memtest i got tons of errors even with 'optimized default'. With older bioses memory was fine, but with the above overclocking issues. Luckily F11 was posted yesterday. When I ran it, no more errors. Not only that but the OC seems to be stable now and temps are slightly better.

So, my interm overclock @ intel stock is
CPU: E6750
OC: 365x8 (2.92GHz)
Stepping: G0
Vcore: 1.35 - Stock
Cooling: Intel Stock
Motherboard: Gigabyte DS3R Rev 1.0
Bios Version: F11 (Released Jan 4 2008)
Operating System: xp sp2

RAM brand: ocz

Temps are 35C Idle, 62-65C load (coretemp); mobo is still 44C load, 42c idle.
Tested orthos for 10 minutes - orthos; Ran Memtest for about 70% but will do the rest later.

All seems to be okay - games work, and no random errors. I wonder if I can push it more: I really want to get the FSB/DRAM to 1:1 but 3.2GHz might be too hot for stock cooling. Also I'd like to push the memory back to 4-4-4-15 but according to bill parrish, it's better to have faster CPU than to have faster ram.

DS3R rev 2.0 F11 / E6750 here myself.

I think you're trying a little too much at once and getting confused at which is not stable.

First of all, make sure "Robust Graphics Booster" is [Auto], "C.I.A.2" is [Disabled], "Performance Enhance" is [Standard]. These are like Automatic overclock features I believe, these will only push your system harder while you're trying to get stable overclock results.

I would set your ram timings to what your ram says your defaults are (not BIOS defaults, go to the OCZ site and look up your model and see the timings). Also, don't set them on [Default] / [Auto] in bios, turn on DRAM Timings Selectable to [Manual] and set them manually. Sometimes your BIOS does not detect correct default timings.

Go ahead and set your "DDR2 OverVoltage Control" to whatever your max voltage is on your ram. Again, look this up on your product website. I don't know what yours is but mine is 2.1v for instance. Once you get a stable overclock come back and lower this till you're stable to try to get lowest possible voltage.

Leave your sub timings alone for now, set them to Auto/Default, these will only confuse you more while you're trying to overclock your CPU. Once you get a stable overclock come back and mess with these.

I noticed this, reading your post I see..

RAM rated speed: 6400
RAM actual speed: 870MHz

I believe DDR2 6400 is 800MHz frequency, no? Please post your OCZ ram product page maybe we can get this straightened out.

You're not running 1:1. That could cause instability, especially since I imagine you're using Platinum Rev. 2s. Those chips couldn't hope to get 900MHz.

You need to set System Memory Multiplier to 2.00x. Stock speed for your RAM should be 667, at FSB365, it should be 730.

Hi all,
The memory i am using is:OCZ DDR2 PC2-6400 Platinum Revision 2 Dual Channel
http://www.ocztechnology.com/products/memory/ocz_ddr2_pc2_6400_platinum_revision_2_dual_channel

I turned off "SPD = AUTO" and set SPD to 2.00x. So, memory runs at "DDR667" i.e. 365x2 = 730MHz?
Changed the rest of the set-up and it seems to be stable with all of the same tests. Crysis can run 30 min w/o crashes.
Idle is 30-35C
Load is 60-62C (Orthos).
I'll try to push it to 3GHz then up to 3.2GHz but will monitor the temperatures.

If it's any help i have a very similar set up to you

idle temps about 30
full load about 51

( it's summer in Australia!)

hope this helps:D

That config is nearly the same as mine, except for the cpu cooler (i'm on stock hsf).
I have pushed my clock to 3.06GHz with the same above settings. Temps have not increased, but this resulted in an error while converting a divX file (memory cannot access message). Looks like I found the ceiling with stock HSF/voltage.
Eventually I'll want to get to 3.2GHz to 3.6GHz, but that's when i'll need a meaty cooler..preferably one that is inaudible :)

My system started to hang recently when I was IDLE so i'm investigating a need to bump up CPU voltages. This started happening a few days after i bumped the memory down from 2.1V to 2.0V. I've switched it back to 2.1V to see if that stabilizes things.

My system cpu voltage is set to 'standard' (1.35V): In CPU-Z and occt, it will report idle = 1.196 and load = 1.296 (speedstep enabled) @ 375x8.

I once tried to undervolt to 1.33. In CPU-Z it reported idle as 1.33V and load as 1.296V! Is that normal? If I increase the voltage to 1.37, is it normal to have 1.37 (or a vdroop so say 1.31) idle and then a drop to say, 1.296V load? Temps are consistently 35 idle/58 load.

Someone on oc forums posted this, although I would never want to go >1.5V on the e6750 :)

E6750 overclocking:
---
this is a rough guide for voltage needs to achieve listed clocks
1.35V-2.66ghz-2.80ghz NB:stock SB:stock VTT/termination: Max(always select highest value)
1.37V-3.0ghz NB :1.37V SB:1.55V
1.40V-3.2ghz NB:1.37V SB: 1.55V
1.45V-3.4ghz NB: 1.40V SB:1.55V
1.47V-3.5ghz NB: 1.41V SB:1.60V
1.50V-3.6ghz NB: 1.41V SB: 1.60V
1.55V 3.7ghz-3.8ghz NB: 1.45V SB: 1.60V
1.60V 3.9ghz NB: 1.47V SB: 1.65V
1.61/1.65V 4.0ghz NB: 1.47V SB:1.65V
1.67V-4.1ghz-4.2ghz NB: 1.50V SB:1.65V

Those voltages seem pretty high to me, however I understand not two chips are the same.

I'm running at 3.4GHz on 1.35v in BIOS and speedfan reporting 1.30-1.31v. Could probably set to 1.34v in BIOS since I skipped up from 1.33 to 1.35v from not being stable, would have to try but I dunno.
