I have a E4300 on a GB 965-DS3 board with Geil-DDR2 800 ram, first of all the chip has a pretty poor overclock of around 3Ghz (poor compared to everyone else's atleast) and to test the memory i set the multiplier to 6x and I cant even get the FSB above 390 which is hardly pushing the chip(2.34Ghz), and it's still under the memory ratings. Any ideas on what could be holding me back? I am running a Antec 550W Triopower(something like that), memory timings are very lax just to try and test my FSB. ram is running at 2.2V and 5-5-15-5 (I think)

more info -

What voltage is the cpu running at ? Try 1.35 or 1.375 V
What cooling ? Stock ? Temps (using coretemp) ?

Did you disable EIST and the other stuff in the bios ?

What bios version ?

Sorry I started the post with the thought to put all that info in then I had to go and pickup my boss, anyways its a DS3 v2 ,i've tried the A7,A9, A10 bios's, im using a 6 heatpipe cooler that I got from newegg, idle temps are low 20's load is high 50's voltage is around 1.45, anything less start's spitting errors in prime at 3ghz, yeah all the stuff is disabled in the bios i've tried upping the MCH, PCIE, and FSB by .1

sounds like you've just got a "shitty" chip.

My e6600 only does 3Ghz at 1.39 & 3.2Ghz at 1.49v

Some chips just don't clock as well as others.
You see all these people bragging about 3.4, 3.6Ghz, etc...
For everyone person you see bragging about a great chip
there at 10 that aren't bragging b/c their chips suck.

Yeah I hear ya on that, im on my second chip actually and they were both this poor, the thing that gets me is I pull my multiplier down to 6x and crank the FSB and the cpu is only at 2.4 Ghz and it wont post over 390mhz on the fsb, I didnt think the chip was limited by FSB just simply by the clock(so fsb x multiplier), hell the onlything that should be keeping the FSB this low would be the chipset, right?

I read some posts (which I didn't fully understand) about how the chipset decides which straps to use, and I remember something about when you lower the CPU multi it overclocks the MCH even if you leave it at the same FSB setting.

Is this ringing any bells with anyone who actually knows what they're talking about and could post a more perspicuous explanation?

My MCH is at +.1v. (overclock is listed in sig)

Because the Northbridge on the DS3 can get so hot, I'd be wary of going higher than +.2v without auxilliary nb cooling.
