For all of you Minecraft fans out there the Minecraft team has announced a delay in the much anticipated Super Duper Graphics pack till sometime in 2018. I've seen some screenshots of the pack and I have to admit it's a HUGE upgrade in graphics so it makes sense to me why some are going to be disappointed. Anyway, just wait a few more months and it will be here. Don't forget to click the link because there is other news there you might be interested in.

We also want to update you on the Super Duper Graphics pack. While originally set for release this year, there’s a lot of work to be done still and we’re not going to be ready to launch it in 2017. We'll be releasing Super Duper next year, and we'll have more information for you here on Minecraft.net soon.

Did the 2.5 billion money-burning deal MS did paying off at all?
Soon after MS purchased it felt like minecraft died.

Hardly, a lot of people still play, and it’s available basically on everything with cross play for a lot of things. There just isn’t much news about the game.

I wonder if the upgrade is for actual game or for the W10 app called Minecraft.

I'm waiting for the day when their graphics upgrade patch notes says "graphics no longer blocky".

Making the graphics “better” is going to kill a lot of the charming simplicity. Not once has my kid ever mentioned that Minecraft needs to look better, and she plays everything up to modern PC games in 4K.

I can see some of it being updated, but if it goes too far, it's no longer Minecraft. The image provided seems to have already gone too far, especially with the water. As Ocellaris said above, it loses its simplicity, which is what made it such a unique success from day 1 that has lasted to this day. Making your product like every other product on the market, isn't a good way to stand out and get peoples attention.

Totally. The blocky graphics are a major part of the charm. It’s fun to play with the kids with a mix of PCs and tablets all in the same room.

Also, will this graphics overhaul up the system requirements significantly? It runs on most anything now which is great as well.

Wrong. It will be Minecraft regardless of how much it's updated.

Ugh if you want to force the player to use beds then why not just introduce a "drowsy" enchantment effect that makes you wobble when standing still and move, mine, fight, etc slower instead of creating a new enemy for it. There's way better reasons to introduce the first flying critter than to punish exploring too long without going back to base.

Based on that picture, it looks like they have a lot of work to do...

I don't see the point in changing the graphics like that. Really to me, that is one of the key things that differentiates mine craft. IMHO, the picture on the right actually looks way worse on top of that...

I have a few kids and know a bunch of kids in their age range as a result (4th-6th grade). They all used to play Minecraft. They shifted to Roblox. I don't think they are playing any of these games right now.
My kids are playing Stardew Valley.
For me, I check out Minecraft every now and then to see what's been updated. I'll play for a few hours and then put it down for something else. Don't get me wrong, I played it a lot when it first came out. I just have been there and done it - not much to keep me coming back anymore.

The biggest issue with minecraft is the visibility distance which this looks to fix. There are mega structures people have created that you can't actually view "naturally" in the game which would benefit greatly from an update. Everything else you see in the image is a texture pack away from being fixed.

Seems like every time Microsoft acquires something - Skype, Yammer, LinkedIn, Nokia, SwiftKey, aQuantive, and Mojang/Minecraft obviously - it's like this sad fall from cool to lame begins. The product never gets better or more popular.

They have this weird, but actually incredible knack for turning customers off, especially in the consumer space. I don't know how they do it; science can't explain it.

Development was crawling and interest was fading even before the Microsoft acquisition.

I started to lose interest in Minecraft around the 2010 Halloween Update. The beautiful, random terrain of older versions was replaced with ugly cookie-cutter biomes. It ruined the game for me.

Looks worse than any of the existing graphics enhancement packs that have been around for years.

It basically looks like they are just adding some lighting/water effects and a high-res texture pack. Looks pretty cool, I will try it if it's not only on the W10 version.

Will it still be built on Java?
And will this apply to the cross platform version, effectively killing the mod scene?

The cross platform feature is fantastic. We've done an iPad, and Xbone and Oculus Rift all in one local game.....hell just have local LAN games on a modern console or anything really is amazing. It's very smooth, and I like the game controller support being built-in.

The mod scene needs to be overhauled though, if they even allow it going forward. There are tons of mods out there, but they are very specific to certain versions and they are not maintained. So my kids see some cool mod on YouTube and first it takes me 30 minutes to find a host that I can download it from (after scanning 15 start download buttons on the page), and then it only works on some super specific version of Minecraft, which the other mods he likes doesn't work on. It's a mess.

I have never understood the appeal of a game that looks like something on Atari 2600. Glad to see they are finally fixing this junker.

FTB or Twitch launcher...makes modded Minecraft with packs super easy.

If you want to do individual mods...that's another story. I wouldn't say mods are not maintained, there are already huge packs for 1.12.2.

"We have a console for that, its called the Xbox 360" - rough quote. MS just doesn't get consumer marketing.

Ah, wasn't aware you were referring to the W10 one since you mentioned the Java version. Haven't followed the W10 one so you are probably right.

It's 3D Legos. Allows any kid to become a developer with minimal learning. I agree though, the graphics are a turnoff and kept me from ever getting into it, but my nephew was obsessed with it for awhile.

If it was not for Windows and Office, MS would have rightfully died many years ago.

They haven’t even made a new OS since Vista, and that was half based off Win NT.

Everything MS touches turns to shit after a few years of marketing, hardware and software.

Too corporate and soul- sucking? The answer might be in how employees feel while working there... Are ideas fakely encouraged but they are really a liability to your continued employment? Stuff like that?

GLSL shaders plugin for minecraft has been around since.. heck, a couple years after release? wonder why they're having so much trouble releasing this patch when some guy in his basement made one?

I'd personally want "infinite" draw distance, or to mimic the curvature of earth with the same type of fog but a more gradual falloff as it meets the horizon

...and of course, an option to revert back to the old style
