Hi, I posted up a message 2 weeks ago about my h50 water cooler having semi hi temps.

It got me thinking about some stuff at work tonight.

I have a 4 core dodge diesel rad in my room on a homemade stand I made outa 2x4's (lol thanks work) I also have the outlet trimmed down to a 3/4 outer and 1/2 inner hose into a ehiem 1250 fish pump (the big boy of yester year) all this is connected into a danger den maze 1 water block which is made for a t-bird cpu. Yeah I know its old school.

It got me thinking.... its all hooked up, just the water block is lying on the floor.

I look at my extra bracket for my h50 (for the corei7 cpu i think) and notice that the circle that holds the h50 is just large enough to cover the water block on the edges. Humm.... :)

I look at another hold down I have for a older 9700 zalman heat sink and that looks like it might work as well.... :)

I am thinking... Why can't I take my h50 off my cpu, and put my maze 1 in its place and use the holder to hold it in place?

What do you guys think? the bracket looks large enough.

Sure why not, But why not just get a piece of 3/8 thick acrylic or polycarbonite (check yellow pages for plastics or mcmaster.com) and it is pretty easy with a hacksaw and drill to make a cpu hold down. Typically it is just an H shaped piece. Use one of the other hold downs to mark the hole pattern on the acrylic. You could make it out of plywood even. Hardware available many sources.

Well I brought home some angle iron lol from work I thought about cutting it up and drilling some holes, but seriously looking at the h50 hold down, it looks like a no brainer to hold the heatsink in place. the springs on the h50 bracket are alot stronger then the stock springs that the water block used in the first place... Temping to just try it to see if a soild copper water block would post better temps then the new fancy h50. (being that the maze 1 is old as death)

I'd have to disconnect the water block to get in the grommet of the back of the case, and I have no real way to stop the water lol. I guess I could try to drain that rad but thats alot of water dammit lol. Getting excited about water cooling all over again.

The 'getting older' part of me says just leave it alone the h50 is working, and altho the temps are retarted hot the system is prime 95 stable. 1.4626v 3.6ghz core duo 2 core lol.

eh, its a low restriction block, just exactly what you need with that H50 pump, I have a maze 3 cooling an OCed E6300 C2D, works just fine. Mount that baby up, hell frankly I would forget the H50 you have a pretty decent "old school" system just sitting there, see what that does vs the H50. Anyway messing around like you are thinking is the big fun of WCing to me. Go for it.

Ahh I'm gonna try it.

What I am saying is I am gonna remove the h50 from the case, i.e the rad, pump/water block, and just use the 'mounting bracket thats installed on the case to hold down my maze 1 t-bird block which has its own pump that sits on the floor. the Ehiem 1250 ac pump. which connects to my huge over 3 foot long 4 core truck rad. I'm not gonna rip apart that h50.

Hope it doesnt break anything lol.

Ahh its too bad.

I took the h50 off, I unplugged the maze 1 from the hoses and plugged em with some felt markers lol. I looked and tryed to put the maze in there but theres a bunch of caps in the way. right next to the cpu. who puts caps there that are taller then the cpu right beside it?

I tryed turning the maze 1 up and down ways. but theres caps on top and the notherbridge cooler thingy is in the way.

I managed to get the maze 1 to seat with the cpu and just touch the caps but then the h50 holding bracket is barley touching on the side closest to the caps. I grabbed a metal insert from the back of the case (those flat metal things you take out to install your video card or what ever type card you have). but its a pain in the butt that way looks horrible, and doesnt look too safe.

For now I just put the h50 back in. I guess I'll have to order up a water block.

Anyone have any websites in canada for water blocks? www.ncix.com only has Zalman ZM-GWB5 and it looks like it doesnt have a copper base?

Ahh, I tryed grinding 1/4 inch off one side of the maze1 water block to fit it past the the caps on the motherboard. lol. was going good, I figured I'd come inside check if its enough room. I ended up cracking the block. guess I went in too far. oh well. I suppost I'll have to buy a proper fitting water block now.

I saw an Apogee XT at MicroCenter in Overland Park, KS for $60.

I live in Canada tho, so thats a no go.

NCIX.com a canadian online store which I usually buy parts from got the Apogee XT for 79$ canadian so thats not too bad. I ordered it this morning.

So either way I got what I wanted. sorta.

Well, I got my Apogee XT, I don't have the back plate for it yet.

I am using my x50 back plate and it seems to be working.. I put some heat sink paste on the cpu and clamped down the block with the h50 back plate and then took it off. spread over everwhere so its working.

Put the hoses on the block, hooked it all up. ran my pump for about 2 min no water leaking.

Turned on the computer and it booted up. I am alittle nervous about the barb ends. they don't seem to thread very far into the water block. I tightened the barbs up as much as I dared to as not to strip anything.

Anyone have any leaking issues with the apogee xt block with the stock barbs?

Anyhow. temps so far are awesome. idling is 21c now. used to be 39c with h50.

My rad has no fan on it. passive cooled. I am gonna have to see how much it heats up over time.

I am gonna run some prime95 now see how hot it gets.

Crazy 39c under load
thats really low.

Highest before I hit was 68c
I might end up throwing a fan on the rad, I dunno. temps are really awesome so far.

Well after leaving my computer on for 24 or so hours. The water has warmed up.
Computer idles at 24c-25c now instead of 21c when I first hooked up the system.

I drained the rad, and swapped some hoses around to help with the water cooling.
I can't tell the difference.

Loop used to go.
truck rad, ehiem 1250 pump, cpu block, back to truck rad.

I changed it so it goes like this now.
Truck rad, cpu block, ehiem 1250 pump, back to truck rad.

Pain in the butt doing it. I have like long hoses, 15 feet or so 1 way. I now have massive air in my lines which sucks. computer is the high point in the loop, and thats where my air is.

I lifted my lines up and have been trying to push the air into the pump so it can pump it into the rad to get rid of the air bubbles. argggg. pain in the butt. I think I got most of em if not all of em. The flow is back to normal now. I am hoping that if theres any more air trapped in my lines that the flow of the water might slowly move them to the pump so it can pump em to the rad.

I am thinking about looking for a T setup for where my hoses connect to the water block (at the highest point outside of the box and have another line going up wards with a cap so that the air has a place to go.
