From my previous mod, I've finally decided to cut out the stamped grill to improve the air flow...

I don't have any dremel, so a 1inch hole-saw will be up for the job!

First Blood! Remember to use glove when drilling :(... my hole-saw snagged a piece and sent the shurikens flying across my wrist!

The Story...
I went to Ace Hardware in MidValley Malaysia to get some air filters... but the smallest air filter sold are for air conditioners measuring 2 feet by 4 feet! also costly... bout USD$12
So i scouted around until i found this!

Just those plastic cd covers.. got tonnes of it at home! best of all... it's free!

But later i found that the filter reduced about 70% of the airflow... i endded doing it just with the plastic mesh :p
 
i picked up 80mm fan filters on ebay, 8 of them....for about $15 shipped. not bad imo. they filter out the dust like a champ too, no more weekly cleanings anymore.
 
Nice, I was thinking of using some old speaker covers last night to do the same. My room is a sespool of cat hair and dust
 
Find a woman and steal her old panty hose, makes excellent filters, you can even adjust the filter hole size (airflow restriction) by how much you strech them. you easily make a frame to hold the hose with popsicle sticks or CD cases etc. you seem very inventive and should have no problems coming up with something :)

You could remove some of the ghetto-ness from that mod by sanding the edges where you removed the grill with a Dremel grinding wheel and then some hobby sandpaper, which would remove the sharp edges, and then put a wire fan grill on the outside which won't impede the airflow.

For cheap filters, I used to use dryer sheets. Easily replaceable when they got nasty too.

filters work better on intakes

edit: unless that's an intake... which... mmm... isnt the best place for one ;)

That's just what I was thinking. One does not need to filter an exhaust fan. :) Now go get a round file and a wire grill to fix that hole! :p

I use pantyhose for a fan filter.

But like everybody is saying:
WHY WHY WHY would you want to filter the rear of the case anyway? you want a 120mm fan exhausting on that blowhole, with as little blockage as possible. I estimate that adding that CD sheet as a filter is almost as damaging to airflow as the original stamped grill in terms of surface area...

If you install an exhaust fan, you won't need that PSU shroud that directs air up, trust me, it's not going to work if you hope for the CPU fan to passively suck from the left and then all the air to go out the PSU and directed to your ceiling. It's better if you just exhaust everything from the rear of the case as it was designed as the hotspot in the ATX format. Even if that's what you're planning, you'd need to build a duct from that 120mm hole to your CPU fan because it sucks air from the surrounding area and depending on the air pressure in your case, it won't neccessarily be from that hole you just cut open, the hot air will just circulate out from the CPU heatsink and mix with the air around it. There won't be any great direction of airflow from outside the case, inside, to your PSU. That kind of passive cooling doens't work too well... And again, even if it does work, putting that CD sheet mesh there is just about as bad as the original stamped grill.

Don't you want filters in the front of your case, wherever your intakes are to prevent dust from getting in?
 
I figured that he was using the lower fan for an intake to suck in cold air over the CPU, and that was why he made the ghetto air dam from the PSU, so the hot air exhausted by it didn't get sucked right back in. I've considered doing that in the past, but decided not to.

If that is incorrect, yes, it would be silly to use a filter on an exhaust fan.
 
yeah I thought this too... the first few pics looked good when removing the steel pressed fangrill, but I usually leave it just like that. I really hate it when case manufactures block literally 90% of the airflow because of some stupid pinhole sized perforated rear "fan grill" :rolleyes:

Even my Lian Li had some quirks like that with obstructive rear fangrills... I used the best tool to use, my trusty dremel and wheel :)
