GF FX5200 or R9200

Personally, I'd take the 9200, they're both POS cards, but still, i think is the 9200 is (slightly) better. If you can get a 9100/8500 for a similar price, grab that, they're much better

when my ATI GIGABYTE RADEON 9200 is compared with my friends nvidiot CHAINTECH FX5200, i get 1325 higher on 3dmark01, and i get higher clocks than his 5200( mines is 317/247 and his is 311/241) we both used the newest drivers. so i reccomend the 9200, i got the gigabyte 9200 because it has better hynix ram, heatsink and "FAN"(helps a lot with the overclocking) and it looks so much cooler
make sure you get the normal 9200, NOT THE SE version, it sucks!

The Geforce 5200 is the *WORST* card there is. It's totally misleading. It's got crappier performance in some tests than the Geforce 4 MX440. Yet they stick 256MB of ram on some of them and attach the word Ultra to them making them seem like a good buy to the novice.

Fact is the 9200 is pretty shitty also. Just not as shitty as the 5200. You'd be so much better off picking up a used Geforce 4 Ti4600.

get the 9200 over the 5200. but if you can find it for a good price, like Sir-Fragalot said, the ti600 would be better (even tho its a dx8.1 card).

mx440 anyone? ;)

Maybe you should look at some Radeon 7000/9200se/9600se benchmarks.

i've got a fx 5200, i have had zero problems out of it. It has played every game i wanted it too so far. i have it overclocked to 320/520.

Yah, 9200SE gets my vote for worst card since Savage 2000.

For the OP, what do you want to do with the card? Gaming? They both suck, but they will both play CS. 2D? Usually Radeon has better color, sharper 2D. Ease of use? 5200 is likely to give fewer problems, particularly on older games (which is all these cards will play well).

BTW, if anyone says "But the 5200 is DX9 and the 9200 is only DX8!" I will do my damndest to reach through this monitor and stab you in the face.

But the 5200 is DX9 and the 9200 is only DX8.1! :p

I forgot to mention before if you're actually going to buy a card, you can get a new retail VisionTek Radeon 9100 128MB for under $62 shipped from www.shentech.com . It's a much better choice than either a 5200 or 9200. Or if you can get a Ti4200 for around $65-$70, that's an even better choice.

Nauseous:
I agree with that except for Halo... performance is either terrible (640x480 DX9 mode) or kind of ugly (DX8 mode). I was using one as an iterim card for a couple of weeks, so I know what played well and what was unacceptable. But otherwise the 5200 gets a bum rap. Maybe that was deserved when it was a $120 (regular) or $179 (Ultra) product at introduction, but at around $50 online now for the regular version it's a pretty decent deal. And it is significantly faster than the 9600SE in many games and close in performance in most of the rest. Too bad several people just mouth off without even knowing what they're talking about.

go with the radeon....the 5200 would be better off being used as a platter to serve turds than to play any games....

hrm...
I ran halo at 1024x786 with zero problems. max everything

Buy a 9800SE (the ones that are really 256-bit memory interfaces, just labeled different) and flash it to a 9800 PRO BIOS. That's what I would do, the price difference shouldn't be drastic, but the performance difference will be.

Is this card going to be used for your main computer or as a second display type deal or what?

Well you have to put things into context. Comparing the performance of a 9200se to a 98/97/9600 isnt exactly fair.

Its like a viper compard to a ford focus.

It will run any game currently out, just dont have delusions about its performance. Will it run doom 3? Probably, will it run decent? At low settings, probably.

It succeeds in what it was designed for, cheap, functional, and gets the job done.

The 5200 is also a decent card. Its really a toss up.

my laptop has a 9200 in it and it's a decent gamer

i can play GTA:vice city at 1600x1050 with no problems, however thats with no I candy and with as few shiny car models as possible. seems shiny cars kill the card.

Belive me look at my sig...

DO NOT BUY A 5200!!! It was a huge mistake lol.

woah your 5200 gets 1414 3dmarks in 03 my 9200 gets 1027..this blows :p

^^ is yours overclocked?
i can run bf:viet with my 9200 (oc'ed look in sig) at 1028 x 768 at med details, average fps is about 25-30
i can run all the current games, but i dont know about future games
and yes i wish i brought the 9100 or ti4200 (or the higher models)
but if you stuck between chosing a 9200 and 5200 i would go with the ati gigabyte 9200(non SE)

no its not overclocked.

Im now wondering if my 9200 is a regular or SE.

The VGA memory clock is 200MHz
VGA core clock is 250Mhz

yeah its regular just like mines :) , go download omega drivers and overclock the crap out of that !!!!!!!! 9200, keep us updated, and ask us for any overclocking help because you CAN damage your hardware  .
oh and one more thing, is it built by ATI or some other company?, does it have a fan on the heatsink?(most non gigabyte9200 dont), if it doesnt put a 40mm fan ontop of the heatsink, it helps with the overclocking

well, i don't think its fair at all, number one 9200 only has 64mb compared to the 5200's 128mb(yes that does matter), number two the 5200 has a much better hsf than the 9200's heatsink only(wont matter much i guess, but still), and number three the ati CAN be unlocked by omega drivers, are they too stupid to find that out?. tell me when they compare the 128mb 9200 to the 5200 128mb

I have 4.6 Cat drivers...how did you know mine was a Gigabyte :D yup it doens't come with a fan.
Did you use the overclocking software that came with the card?

yeah some gigabytes dont have fans, they only have the silver hs. the overclocking software is actually an overclocking software(dont know why they said it was  ), v-tuner that came with the card is just a health watch, i uninstalled it since its no use at all. download OMEGA drivers, it comes with an overclocking software and use that
btw im running on the omega 4.4
and i just put an old ramsink on the back of the pcb(card) where the core is located under, it gets kinda hot their when overclocked and the heatsink on the back helps a bit, i just stuck it on with some thermal tape. no need for ram sinks on the rams, they dont make enough heat for it
go buy a 40 mm fan and screw it right on the heatsink
