Getting files on win xp password protected HD

I have a friend who needs to reinstall windows on their system since they are having multiple problems with the system. However, they have certain files they need to get off the HD first. Since they are unable to install cd-r software (because of the problems) I brought their HD to my place and hooked it up to my pc as a slave HD. I have access to the HD in win however, the files needed are under a password protected user account (windows password). I do have the password. However, I can't boot from this HD (other problem). Is there any way to access these files? tks :confused:
 
you should be able to "take ownership" of all of the files on that HDD.. i don't see why not... just disable simple file sharing, and then see if you can do that... or put the drive back in his old computer and work from there.. also you probably could put the drive in as your boot drive and do a "repair install" of windows xp then set up a new user/pass or use his old one..
 
If no one can remember the password, and you do have someone with administrative rights, you could take off the ownership of it by booting to windows for a few minutes. As a last ditch you could try a piece of commercial software called l0pthcrack which, as long as you have some admin access, can get most passwords under 8 letters in less than 24 hours, and if it's an actual word within 5 minutes.
 
If you havent already created a BartPE CD, this would be the perfect oppurtunity to create one.
I did a job last week, (reinstall XP on a fully spyware fubared PC), each user profile had a password (6 profiles) and I couldnt copy of the outlook.pst, My Docs and Favorites from each profile due to 'access denied' messages.

Popped in the BartPE CD and just copied the files to my main C drive, no access problems !
 
Ontrack Easy Recovery is a good way to get by those denied access folders, it seems to just ignore all that crap and let you copy it to another location.
