GeForce6800 NU vs Radeon 9800XT

Is last years tech better then this years?

This isnt really a fair comparison....

but ya the NU

as an upgrade, not very worth it, with the Next gen coming and all

no it won't be an upgrade, I need to buy a vga for my friend and another friend offered me a 9800xt for $200.00 so I couldn't decide. but I guess 6800 NU it is! Thanks!

yah..iot is pretty fair b/c thtawas last-gen top end range and this is this gen of mid range :) but hey..it is newertech so it should be better :)

I do feel sorry, however, for those who bought the 9800XT when it first came out back in october '03. I mean, up until that point video cards were progressing quite slowly in performance.(ie. the 9800pro was only marginally better than the previous generation's 9700pro and the 9800XT was only very slightly better than the 9800pro). So many ppl paid 500USD for a brand new 9800XT only to have replaced by tech that performs three times better just a few months later (leaving them in exactly the same position as somebody who bought a 9700pro over a year earlier).

Man do you have that one pegged.

How many people saw Gabe tell us how the 9800s were the "cards to have" for HL2, bought a 9800XT with a HL2 coupon, only to wait a year for the game and play it at low settings on their outdated cards anyway?
Were I one of them, I would be enraged.

I managed a good 1280x1024 with my 9700 Pro with the details set high. A 9800XT should handle 1600x1200. Those aren't "low" settings in my books.

Sure HL2 might be playable at 1600x1200 with a 9800XT, but I think the point he was trying to make earlier is there is really no contest in terms of framerates and eye-candy between the x800 series and the 9800XT.

blah....it might handle 1600x1200 on low settings or dx8 or something...
but really..I rather play @ 1024x768 max details with alot of AA/AF :)

i concider the X800 series ( and whatever under it) to be last gen tech because ... nvidia get new shaders and eyecandy details every new series.. and the X800 didnt.. i hate ATI for having to make double for there X800 series and then make a new series thats acually going to have next-gen details and making people get the new cards to get the nice shaders and details. Though it was a smart idea on ATIs side.. to make fast as shit cards that have last years technology that they knew you all would buy...

Do what I did. Buy a Sapphire Rad 9800 Pro 256MB and flash the card to 9800XT. They are the same card other than the bios. $140 vs $300+ (why $300...I have not a clue)

I don't know how playable your 9700pro was at those settings but mine were terrible. It was ok most of the time but in heavy action scenes it would become very choppy, almost lock up at times. i tried different drivers but none made that much of a difference. maybe i'm overcritical but i like everything to look crisp at all times. This was using a 19crt @1024x968
my system
A64@2450
1gb ocz 3500
gigabyte k8ns ultra
9700pro now 6600gt
2 80gb sata raid0

what a difference the 6600gt made
i went with the msi for the better cooling and a good thing
it does get very hot
i even went with a dell 2004fp and wow even an lcd looks great

So are you gonna hate Nvidia for selling you a card that can't play PS3.0 games at decent res and decent frame rates when these games
eventually come out?

Thought not.
