hey my friend has a geforce FX card and i think they are not that great cos of what a few ppl have said here.just wanted to know why they aren't considered to be great?
 
they were poor compared to ati's competing cards, they had bad image quality and not so good performance either

Yep although Nvidia did get some more juice out of them with drivers and what not. Still a 9800xt will own a 5950ultra anyday of the week in just about everything except D3 and Nvidia optimized games. (No bashing intended)
 
They really weren't great. The best nVidia's has to offer IMO are the TI serious and the GeForce 6X to 7X series. Those cards rock.

I own a 5900 ultra (in the wifes box now) so I know this one very well. The big problem with the FX series is the way they handled instructions with PS 2.0. AFAIK PS 1.4 instructions were 16 bytes in length, the FX series could handle 8 of these at 1 time just like the 98XX series. The FX series could also handle 32 byte operations 4 times per cycle. the 98XX series could not do this at all.

The problem is that PS 2.0 operations are 24 bytes in length, because of the way the FX series tried to handle them it could only do 4 operations at one time while the 98XX series could do 8 as it was engineered to handle all operations at that level of percision. This effectivly cut the cajones off the FX series - they could do PS 2.0 but only at HALF the speed. Nvidia came out with better drivers later in the cards lifecycle (remember the "dynamic compiler"?) but they could only do so much with what the FX series was designed to do.

Bottom line - the FX series is great provided you don't throw ANYTHING at it that uses pixel shader 2.0 or DX9. If I remember correctly it ran DX8 stuff quite zippy.
 
FX series may have been poor performers but there is one awsome thing about the FX series: the FX 5700le. This card, AFAIK, is the fastest solution that PCI graphics users have available to them. People whine about not enough cards being made for the AGP slot while there are tons of potential gamers out there with onboard graphics and no AGP/PCIe slots who would love to have a nice video card.

So, in a way, the Geforce FX series actually provides the best possible gaming performance to a whole market segment of gamers.

Does a 5700le even play new games though ? Somehow I doubt it.
If you're stuck with regular PCI graphics it's high time to upgrade !

I suppose if you lowered the pixel shaders to 1.4 modern games, they would likely still be playable on most FX cards.

The TI series back in the day performance wise was that of what the GeForce 7800 series are today.

TI cards were so rock solid!

I don't know never owned one but, I just looked at a 5700LE review at B3D and the performance seems a little better than a 5200 ultra, but quite a bit behind the 5700 Ultra. Which in turn is seriously outclassed by the 5900 series. A 5700LE is a little better than a 5200 ultra but far worse than a 9600XT imo.

I tried to play F.E.A.R. on a friend's 9600pro setup and even at 640x480 EVERY single option turned off or to its lowest setting, the fps were between 10-30.
Unplayable imo. Could have tried pixel doubling I guess. LOL Pixel doubling at 640x480 !!! :D
 
I owned a 5700LE and it really was pretty good. Gave it to my uncle to play DOD. But at the time I played Doom3 and HL2 at 1024x768 w/ everything on medium and high and had a 30-45 FPS rate consistent. Not sure how it would do on BF2 or FEAR, but Ill find out soon when my uncle upgrades the rest of his rig.

The next step I made was a 6600GT and it blew the card away. I noticed that the 5700LE is still like 75-80 bucks on newegg. Just not worth it when you can spend 130 and get the 6600GT.
