So at GDC AMD is set to present the work they've done with VR (read Oculus) using Mantle.
http://www.roadtovr.com/news-bits-amd-share-low-latency-vr-rendering-tricks-gdc-2015/

This talk will provide a detailed explanation of several mechanisms by which graphics engine developers can dramatically reduce both actual and perceived latency and “stuttering” in graphics and virtual reality applications running on modern GPUs such as those powered by the AMD Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture. Real world examples of optimized AAA content will be discussed and explained, complete with before and after performance metrics.

This talk will give developers the tools and understanding required to exploit modern GPU architectures to take their graphics engines to the next level: extremely low latency, stutter-free, liquid smooth graphics at high frame rates (90-120Hz and beyond).

For some other hints watch this interview with Richard Huddy where he talks about how they've implemented a One-GPU-per-eye approach in Crossfire using Mantle (with very low latency) in Star Citizen.

This is the reaction of one of the Oculus guys when asked about it.

I'm just gonna sit back, sip my tea and might give a sensible chuckle.

This is where the value of Mantle is being realized, it allows developers to pave the way experimenting and implementing support for new tech like VR.

Once DX12 comes around and if it gives developers similar control over the hardware like Mantle does, they'll know how to implement this quicker and everyone wins.

This is great news for all twelve people that will buy an Oculus Rift in 2018 when it finally launches!

Am I trolling right?

Explicit GPU control via low level driver access in multi-GPU configurations is one of the best features of Mantle imo. I play BF4 at 2560x1440 using my system in signature, on my ROG Swift at 120hz, and it is unbelievably smooth. Microstutter is completely non-existent.

Wow, this is exciting stuff!

Mantle makes games incredibly smooth and responsive. "Seeing" what is going on dev-side for VR adds even more value to it! I like the 1 GPU per eye possibility!

Great read & listen.
