I mentioned in another post that the Gateway has launched in Europe as PackardBell. On their website the weight specs are

1.18 kg 3-cell, 1.33 kg 6-cell or
2.6bs 3-cell, 2.93lb 6-cell

This difference in weight from 6cell to 9cell should be similar to the increase from 3cell to 6cell (i.e. 2.93-2.6 = .33lb). Thus I would reckon that the 9-cell would weigh 2.93+.33= 3.26lb

Sometimes it helps if you do a little more reasearch. Acer owns and makes Gateway pcs the LT3103 uses the same shell, screen, battery, keyboard, touchpad etc...as the 751h. It fits. I know this because I have a 3cell AAO751h 3 cell battery on my LT3103u

thanks for the confirmation. fwiw, i researched this issue, and didn't find any authoritative info about 3 cell batteries for lt3103u other than in this very thread. there's nothing on the Acer site, or the Gateway site, about it. and i'm not about to spend $60-100+ on a 3 cell battery because somebody with a blog somewhere suspects that an Acer battery might fit on a Gateway laptop.

you have any idea how many different batteries there are for Acer laptops, and how many different Acer 751 laptop models there are, and how many different battery designs there are for just the Acers?

In addition to comments by 'no_control', some more research that further confirm that the Acer 3/6/9 cell will fit the Gateway.

(1) The battery that came with the Gateway (UM09B44) has a fine print which says '...made for Acer'. I know this doesn't mean much since Gateway is owned by Acer, but...
(2) There is a review for the Packard Bell m/a which is the exact same thing as the LT3103u with a PB rebadge. The review has this great close-up picture of the battery (http://tiny.cc/IN3Hp). When I looked up the battery model #, it is indeed the same as an Acer AO751h

Well considering this Laptop was just released I'm surprised you would find any info other than basic reviews. FWIW I can appreciate your apprehension, but at the same time I think you need to be realistic.There isn't going to be an instant modding community 6 weeks after it debut on a system that can only be had @ best buy. :rolleyes:
This thread is for exchanging information, it's not my personal blog spot. I own one of these units and I'm willing to plunk down my hard earned duckets to tinker and try things out. I'm also willing to take the time to share the info with others who are interested doing similar things with these units.

Why would Acer or Gateway promote the interchangability between 2 competing products? Why would they offer it to begin with. Its just not how large companies operate. As far as I can tell Acer (or gateway) does not offer a 9 cell battery ofr the 751H and yet I can google and find'em on ebay, amazon, etc... Doesn't mean Acer will warranty anything if you slap one on. Same applies here. I had a 751h availiable to me and the batteries looked to have an identical interface. I plugged it into my LT3103u and fired it up...it worked for the few days I had access to both systems. So my educated assumption was that all of the Acer 751H batteries will work on this machine. I did a little more digging and discovered Acer owns and makes Gateway and their products. This would also explain why the aforementioned 751h and the LT3103u sat side by side looked identical. This is no different than HP and Compaq same company, same products, different sku and markets.

I'll update soon as I have a wifi n card on the way.
 
Who gives as shit about the battery? Jeeze.

I bought one of these today. Pretty good so far. Putting Windows 7 on it is game changing though. Totally new experience. Downloaded the Hulu desktop as well. Works better than the browser version.
 
Can anyone recommend a decently priced and performance SSD for this Netbook? I would like to give 7 a shot but not wiling to commit to a permanent switch.

I picked up one of these guys a few days ago and I've got a couple of questions.

Anyone have confirmation of max ram in the system. 64bit proc so I'm thinking maybe more than 2gb.

Also, any word on over clocking both the cpu and gpu? I know both of these chips are underclocked for battery saving purposes I'm wondering if we can for go that benefit for some performance boost.

Also, I've got the latest ati drivers installed on windows 7. Are there other drivers that would be better?

That's probably incorrect since the M690T chipset only supports up to 128MB for dedicated video memory (DDR2) for use as a framebuffer. The dedicated memory is on a 16-bit bus and would be much slower than access from main memory. At 400MHz core speed the x1270 is about 50% faster than the GMA950 in FEAR at low resolution (neither are playable in higher resolutions) and about the same speed at 1024x768 in Q3A. Given the regular sized battery, I wouldn't think the GPU was downclocked much. Many generations old sub low end graphics aren't really suitable for modern gaming, but the video decoding features should be useful.

The laptop seems like a nice entry into the segment. The price isn't bad and the features look good. I'm going to wait until Q4 to see how Moorestown turns out.
 
Anyone have an opinion which Win7 OS (32, or 64 bit) would yield better results on this netbook?

Correct the CPU is 64 bit but it comes with 32 bit Vista, & I believe this netbook comes with the minimum specs for 64 bit. So I am wondering if 32 bit Win 7 would perform better then 64 bit since this netbook barely meets the minimum requirements for 64 bit.

Really hoping someone has installed both versions & knows which is better for this netbook totally stock. If not I guess I'll find out the hard way.

Oh I guess I don't know. I felt 32 bit Vista it came with the be sluggish. Can't comment on 32 bit Win 7.
 
I've installed both (technet FTW!!!)

W732 feels slower to me, the wife didn't notice, So I would say its subjective.

IMO I would just use W764
 
So far I have Win7-64 installed & its giving me a rating of 2.4 in performance. Vista 32 was 2.7, so I have lost performance thus far according to the OS ratings.

Also Win7 isn't detecting my Ethernet port. No idea why. I would like to try to install some of the system drivers on the Gateway protected partition but I am not sure how to get to them yet.
 
Where did you get a 3 cell battery. I've turned the Internet upside down looking for this battery. The only way I know of getting it is buying the actual AA0751 netbook; dumping the netbook itself and taking it's 3 cell battery.

Does anyone know where to get it?

PS: Can someone recommend a good sleeve that fits the LT3103u perfectly? All the cases I've seen are meant for the 751 (which presume I have the 3-cell battery and the case is too small for the 6 cell battery). I would prefer NOT to get a generic 12" sleeve; and, get something that fits snug with decent, but thin protection.

Best Buy released the $299 version recently. I got all exciting but only to find it was a Atom version with the crappy GMA 950.

Imagine the AMD with ATi verson for $300. I'd be all over it.
 
Most people are all over it at $399; I know I was! It's weird though, this is Bestbuy's hottest selling netbook, yet they dont sell cases, sleeves, or optional batteries for them. All the sleeves I've seen are for the Acer 751 which are smaller in size.

I could see them not selling batteries but they have no excuse to not be selling sleeved for them, maybe there is no sleeves for it available yet.

I really like this netbook, but it doesn't seem to be able to keep up with HD youtube video playback.

You may need to Over Clock to 1.6 Ghz or so. Some are reporting success with SetFSB. Even at 1.6 though you may still experience some missed frames.............
 
Just a heads up. The cpu in this netbook isnt soldered on the motherboard. A guy over at notebook reviews put in a x2 and throttled it down with rmclock due to heat.

Can the Intel 5300 AGN WiFi card be installed using only 2 antennas? I know it has 3, but does the 3rd have to be used? I believe my Dell only has 2 so I'm not sure if this will work or not..

I have the 5300 in my Dell Vostro 1500, and although I'm using 3 antennas, I have tried it with 2 and it works fine. Your computer might be like mine, Dell put 5-6 antennas total in the Vostro. If you don't have that 3rd antenna, you could always buy a 3rd antenna and put it somewhere in the case.

Thanks for the clarification. I heard that the 3rd antenna is overkill and is most likely not utilized even in today's modern wireless technology. I might get a 3rd antenna later and add it in. Where should I put in? Where is it usually located? Is under the keyboard a good idea?

I'm about to pick up one of these Intel 5300 cards for my laptop and hopefully one for my netbook if I ever get one.
 
I'm not sure where my antennas are located exactly (I've swapped wires a few times). What computer are you putting the 5300 into?

I know this contradicts your readings, but when I'm at college there are some spots on campus that aren't reachable at all without my 3rd antenna. Sounds odd I know, but the 3rd antenna really gives it the extra push I need. With that being said, for most uses 2 antennas should be fine.

was gonna pull this topic up but I see I was beaten to it... so much more tempting now - but I just cant scrape the funds together quite yet haha. I keep wondering if its really worth it though. Its more or less an extra hundred dollars for an 11.6" screen, 2gig of ram, and a larger hard drive over the average netbook. in the grand scheme this works out to be a nice deal. but in the end, it doesnt really let you do anything new and exciting haha. But I suppose for word processing at school and some starcraft in the downtime its about perfect and much more portable than a regular laptop. the 10.1" screens are killers...so who knows. I'm "thinking out loud" here haha.

Any confirmation on the dual processor? does the board let you underclock from bios with ease?

Yes, its a standard 2.5" hard drive. As for the dual core processor, yes someone has done it but I think they had to modify the heatsink. Also the only way to underclock it is with software like RMclock.

damn I hope this is true....I'm picking mine up today...can't imagine a netbook with an x2 and 4gig memory.....I'm sold:D

The 4 gigs is a given with the right stick. The x2 is a bit more of an issue. The only eral hope is finding a TK-42 and even that may need to be underclocked.
 
So far I'm thinking I definately gotta grab this one. Seems absolutely perfect for me. Are they exclusive with Best Buy however? Has anyone found another site online or anything?
