1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
Gaming - Mainly WoW but I want it to be able to handle all of current games as well (Batman, Crysis, L4D2, etc)
Productivity - MS Office and Grad School simulation software (probably MATLAB but not doing huge sims or anything)
Entertainment - Music and Movies
2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
$1000 - $1500
Getting as close to $1000 as possible.
3) Where do you live?
Stony Brook, NY
4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. Please be very specific.
Everything. Scroll down for a detailed wishlist.
5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.
None.
6) Will you be overclocking?
Yes.
7) What size monitor do you have and/or plan to have?
23'' is fine. 2ms is a must. I don't believe 2 extra inches should cost $100 extra.
8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?
Jan. 2010
9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? etc.
Crossfire.
10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license?
Yes. University supplied.
Extra Notes:

- I want all parts to be from one online retailer (not necessarily newegg.com, but that's the one that holds my trust atm)
- This computer will be placed on a single bedroom of a shared 4 bedroom apartment at Stony Brook University.
- Becuase of the above and the fact that I don't know my or my roommates schedules, I don't want speakers but a good Headset+Mic solution for gaming WoW+Ventrilo and Listening to Music+Movies. (more details on this bellow)
Current Wishlist:
(Nov. 30, 2009)

Newegg.com Wishlist LINK

Case
COOLER MASTER Centurion 590 RC-590-KKN1-GP Black SECC / ABS ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - $ 49.99
Originally was Antec 300. Changed to current because of suggestions and more space.

Power Supply (PSU)
Antec TruePower New TP-550 550W Continuous Power ATX12V V2.3 / EPS12V V2.91 SLI Certified CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC "compatible with Core i7/Core i5" Power Supply- $ 79.99
Originally was a Corsair 500w. Changed to current due to suggestions.

Case Fan(s)

4x Scythe DFS123812-3000 "ULTRA KAZE" 120 x 38 mm Case Fan - $ 9.99 each - $ 39.96 total
I understand that these fans are pretty noisy at full speed and I really don't mind.
I'm used to a fairly loud A/C on my room/work.
Added 4x fans (before was 3x) because of roomier case. Still unsure on how many I need.

Motherboard
ASUS M4A785TD-V EVO AM3 AMD 785G HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard - $ 84.99
Featured as a great and cheap mobo for OCing right here on [H]OCP, cant go wrong with Kyle imo.

Processor (CPU)
AMD Phenom II X3 720 2.8GHz 3 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 95W Triple-Core Black Processor - $ 119.00
I was really undecided between this and the Phenom II X2 550 @ a higher clockrate.
Finally chose X3 720 mainly because most opinions on the net place it as more bang for buck vs the X2 550.

CPU Cooler/Heatsink with Fan (HSF)
Scythe MUGEN-2 SCMG-2000 120mm Sleeve CPU Cooler - $ 34.99
It was either this or Xigmatek Dark Night, chose this one because of opinions at overclock.net
I understand that a lot of people here recommend Coolermaster Hyper 212, and Im totally open for suggestions on why that one would be better than the Mugen 2.
I really dont mind how hard to setup one HSF or another would be, all I care is about performance/price.

Memory (RAM)
G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL7D-4GBRM - $ 79.99
Changed to this due to suggestions. Originally was going for 1.5v ram but it seems its not that mandatory.

Hard Drive (HDD)
Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 ST3500418AS 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - $ 54.99
Changed to this as is more value oriented. Difference between 16m and 32mb is supposedly not noticeable.

Optical (Disc) Drive (CD/DVD/HD-DVD/BR)
LITE-ON Black 24X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 8X DVD+R DL 22X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW SATA CD/DVD Burner - $ 28.99
I want a sturdy unit because Ill be using netflix pretty often on this.

Video/Graphics Card (GPU)
ASUS EAH5850/G/2DIS/1GD5 Radeon HD 5850 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card w/ATI Eyefinity - $ 309.99
Im first and foremost a WoW Player, but I also dabble on a lot of new games and want my pc to be able to handle them.
Changed from a HD 5770 mainly because I want more power and to play flawlessly at 1920x1080.

Display
ASUS VH236H Black 23" 2ms(GTG) HDMI Widescreen Full HD 1080P LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 20000 :1 (ASCR) Built in Speakers - $ 199.99
23'' is fine. 2ms is a must. I don't believe 2 extra inches should cost $100 extra.
There is a better deal at amazon.com on this one but the extra $ 12 from newegg wont break my bank and I like to keep things on one retailer.

Sound
VIA Onboard Soundcard
Creative Fatal1ty Gaming Headset - $ 29.99
This is of incredibly high importance to me.
Im playing WoW for something close to 4-5 hours 3-4 days a week and I need a good and COMFORTABLE gaming headset to do so.
I also plan to use this to watch movies with.
My room at Grad. School will be pretty small (see pic)

2gt5duo.jpg

So the 8ft cable on this headset should be enough for laying down in the bed and watch movies.
Suggestions will be appreciated.

Miscellaneous
Microsoft Comfort Curve Keyboard 2000 - $ 17.99
Logitech MX518 8 Buttons 1 x Wheel USB Wired Optical 1800 dpi Gaming Mouse - $ 39.99
Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound - $ 7.99
Im not sure about the keyboard here, as Ive never used comfort ones but reviews say that "once you go COMFORT, you never go back" so...

TOTAL PRICE - $ 1,178.83
SHIPPING right now is around $ 30.00 - $ 40.00

As a side note, I'm also buying the following laptop from HP with my student discount:
http://www.shopping.hp.com/product/rts_notebook/rts_notebook/1/storefronts/VM073UA%2523ABA
The price I get is $539.99 atm. (It will probably be lower on Jan 2010)
Suggestions for a similar would be appreciated as well.

Thank you for reading and sorry for the wall of text/links.

Quick recommendations:
I would only get the Antec 300 if it had free shipping. Otherwise, its after shipping costs is fairly similar to the better and roomier Coolermaster RC-590 and RC-690 cases. In that case, ditch the Antec 300 and go with those Coolermaster cases instead. If free shipping is available for the Antec 300 when you buy the PC, get it then assuming there's no free shipping on the Coolermaster RC-590 case as well.

Ditch the RAM. This other G.Skill set is just as good as that G.Skill set you chose but is $16 cheaper:
$80 - G.Skill Ripjaws F3-12800CL7D-4GBRM 3 x 2GB DDR3 1600 RAM

HDD wise, ditch the WD Black 500GB drive as it is absolutely a horrible choice for the money. There are better and faster hard drives for the money:
$55 - Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB 7200RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive
$70 - Western Digital WD6400AAKS 640GB 7200RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive
$75 - Western Digital WD6401AALS 640GB 7200RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive

(your link was to something else)

Isn't going for 1.5v RAM safer if I plan to OC?
The above mentioned RAM is 1.6v so it worries me. CAS Latency is better on it though.

HD:
Isnt:
Western Digital Caviar Black WD6401AALS 640GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - $ 74.99
Which you suggested basically the one I chose but with 140gb more?

I didn't chose the 16mb cache ones because I thought 32mb cache made them faster, am I incorrect in this assumption?

Thx for the suggestions.

1.6V will be ok if ou plan to overclock. Sorry about the wrong link.

You won't notice the difference between the 16MB and 32Mb cache on those two 640GB drives. The only difference between those two drives is the warranty: The Black 640GB has a 5 year warranty while the Blue 640GB has a 3 year warranty.

Thank you for your replies. Very nice info.

I've got one questions though: How many 120mm fans should I buy with the case?
CoolerMaster's website states that the case can hold 8 fans, of which 2 already come bundled. Should I get 6?
I'm thinking that the Mugen 2 pretty much blocks one of the side fans (the top left one) and that the drive bays block another on the front, but not totally sure.

I also decided on going with the 5850, breaking my bank a bit. I would rather not go with the 4000 series because I want dx11 support as it seems that tech is coming to games real fast (whereas dx10 took a long time to adopt, dx11 seems to be coming fast mainly because of the win7 adoption rate)

I just found out that the ASUS motherboard I chose doesn't have native support for CrossfireX (ie. 2x5850) but rather an ASUS mod to the 785g chipset that allows it.
While some websites claim that the speed loss is not significant, I would rather go with a different motherboard with a chipset that natively supports Crossfire.
Any suggestions?
