Hybrid CrossfireX only worked with extremely low-end and older ATI cards. It did not allow you to turn off the video card whatsoever.EDIT: Dammit. My family found out about Hybrid CrossfireX. Now they're wanting me to ask you guys if it lowers the power consumption (They believe that you can turn off and on the discrete graphics card with it). Not sure if it's true or not. Can anyone confirm?
The only technology that allowed you to turn off the video card was Nvidia's Hybrid Power aspect of Nvidia's Hybrid SLI. However, that would require you to get older and significantly more costlier hardware in order to use. Not to mention that the GTX 460 has no mention whatsoever of supporting Nvidia's Hybrid Power. Sadly the GTX 460 is the cheapest best bang for the buck Nvidia card out now. In fact, Hybrid power support was removed back in 2009. So even if you did get the hardware necessary for Hybrid Power, it still may not work correctly or provide the full amount of performance.
So in other words, the potential power savings are not worth the significantly higher costs or the significantly lower performance.
