GameStop Closing 250 'Unprofitable' Stores

You can pay a low wage without treating your employees like crap

That is subjective. Who knows who is being treated like crap, but when you paying around 10-14 dollars an hour for managers, you aren't going to get quality people who know effectively how to manage.

This whole exchange started because someone said that they treat their employees like crap and you said that they treat them like crap because they are dumbasses.

It had nothing to do with how much they earn. You brought that into the discussion. And while they may be dumbasses for the most part (I friggin hate that store), I will once again say that there is no justification for treating your employees like crap, even if they are "unskilled" and low-earning.

I still don't understand how they have any stores open its like people haven't herd of the internet.

I personally haven't had any bad experiences with Gamestop but I will say I was disappointed when they took over all my favorite Software Etc's and Babbages back in the day. It was inevitable that this would happen though, they've become like Starbucks where there's a storefront on every corner. There's just not enough need for that many locations when the products can very easily be consolidated.

---Just to counter some of the Gamestop hate though I'll share my most recent good experience there:

I went to purchase Ni No Kuni for the PS3 on launch day without having made a reservation. When I showed up all of their copies were reserved. The guy running the register said that there may be other stores with available copies but most of them appeared to have only gotten enough for reservations. At that point the manager, who was also a console rpg fan, spoke up and said "go ahead and give him the copy I reserved". I thought that was cool of him and thanked him.

That then got us started on talking about what all games we'd played recently and which ones were coming up that looked cool. Not once did he or the other employee try to sell me on buying any extra BS. I did go ahead and pick up another Game Informer subscription though just to kinda say thanks (always good toilet reading).---

I'm sure there are a lot of shitty Gamestop employees out there but there's probably just as many good ones.

And there are 2 sides to every story, maybe the employee in question commenting is a shitty employee. You are going to have those people at any job but I am telling you most don't know much about management.

They are managed at a level from a district manager who in turns pushes sales upon the workers. Some stores have assistant managers and some have 3rd key assistants as well.

This is the model gamestop has used for quite a while. Selling games is never hard it is the stuff like the 2 dollar protection etc on top of the sale that is pure profit for the company.

Telling you right now gamestop employees are paid ridiculously low wages. Mcdonalds pays higher.

You know what's funny?

GameStop had a policy at least in my neck of the woods where they opened most PC games themselves and the contents of the box was kept in a plastic bag in the backroom. This was to stop customers for stealing the games. Mean while, the box that was now just an empty shell now got beat up slightly and ultimately, misshapen.

Of the few PC games I did buy at GameStop, one was a racing game I wanted. I got home and quickly found out I was getting the same game for my birthday. It had already been bought from Amazon and was wrapped.

I go back to GameStop and, all of a sudden, I have an "open box" and they won't refund me. I said, you're kidding, you guys opened it, not me! After about 5 mins and one of the kids calling the store manager, they refunded me. It was only $35 dollars but still.

There are stickers you can usually put on the box that are almost impossible to remove. thats what I always did to verify, but yea I caught 2 people trying to steal that shit. One kid I turned over to mall police the other ran away with an empty box. JOKES ON HIM!

As a result of buyouts, near my house are 2 Gamestop locations directly across the street from one another, then a block south are 2 more Gamestop locations in the same shopping mall.

It's been this way for over 5 years and they wonder why some stores aren't profitting.

I'm still bitter at Gamestop for buying and destroying FuncoLand!

Yep! A good friend of mine, who has an MBA once said an MBA is a BS degree and then he explained it this way to me... someone who has a MBA degree i.e. CEO and is hired to manage/run their firm/business/company, truly doesn't know how to even figure out the daily business practices when he/she has to contract a consultant firm (spend thousands of dollars) to have them recommend cuts/lay offs of employees to be profitable (a short term mentality). Who is the dumb and dumber? The board or the people who hired an idiot MBA degree person to run their firm/business/company?

Sometimes educated people (not all) are much dumber than those with less education, ask Bill Gates. :D

The reason GameStop has so many locations in front of each other, or close buy is because pretty much there was always an eb games close by and when they merged they both became GameStop.
