It's been a decade since I last played a pc game and it was diablo ii. Now, I have no idea about current games and I'm looking for a few games like diablo iii (i'll get diablo iii). The type of game I need is where you walk around killing monsters and picking up items. I'd like to hear your favorite games (plot is important to me, I like the Diablo plot). ( I have the hardware to run the latest possible games.) thanks
 
I thought torchlight/torchlight 2 were good knock-offs of diablo series. Torchlight 2 would be a good one to try out. I think its a pretty cheap game now as it came out less than a year before D3 did. People sometimes sell keys i the $5 or less range.
 
If your primary interest is action RPGs here are a few I would look at:

Titan Quest (and its expansion) - probably the closest of the Diablo 2 clones (it is set in Ancient Greece) ... nice looking graphics, wide range of battlefields, multiple difficulty levels, and shitloads of stuff to pick up and manipulate

Grim Dawin - still under development, but by the same team that developed Titan Quest ... set in a post apocalyptic zombie environment

Path of Exile - Free to play online with one of the more complex skill trees available

Divine Divinity series

Sacred series

there are probably a few I am forgetting as well
 
If you want a plot with your ARPG, then you need to grab The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing II. Great story, lots of places to visit and sights to see, very witty sidekick assisting you on your monster hunting, and very competent as a game. Visually it is heavily influenced by the SteamPunk universe.

The quests that are Tower Defense play out beautifully as you physically assist in keeping the enemies at bay. Up to 4 player CO-OP multiplayer online and 8 player pvp if you're into that type of thing. You will love this game!
 
Titan Quest. Plus, the graphics still hold up pretty well even today.

Van Helsing 2 just came out, it's probably not amazing but it should be a fun game.

Torchlight 2 is really great and closer to the Diablo 2 Art style and gamplay.
 
Torchlight I and II are excellent diablo 3 type games, I highly recommend you check them out, and like what others have said, you can usually find keys for both fairly cheap.

Ditto Van Helsing I & II are pretty much Diablo II with updated graphics and a Gothic setting.

Unfortunately I have to be a Naysayer on Titan Quest. It's extremely repetitive. It mostly has to do with the fact that you only encounter enemies in small groups. The massive cpu crushing mobs you want in these games do not occur in Titan Quest, additionally the Boss fights are pretty anti-climatic. Looking back on it I would recommend if you do play it rush through, don't explore. The drops are completely random so theres no difference between killing a twerp and opening a glorious glowing chest.

If you do take the plunge into titan quest (Im too burnt out to try again) a user responded to my complaints with some community fixes that have been released.

Ehm...I would say TL2 is closer to Warcraft 3/Diablo 3 art style than anything. Grim Dawn and Path of Exile are more like Diablo 2.

My job has me travelling too much right now to give it justice but I enjoyed it in its early state when I had time to play it ... it is probably not going to be completely finished until late this year or early next year though (it is still in early access on Steam ... although I supported it back when it was a Kickstarter in 2013) ... I do love the atmosphere and the music though :cool:

It has a great plot if you bother to speak to the NPCs. I think that the plot is right up my alley, but I can't recommend PoE because the lag issue is worse than ever. After taking a break from it for half a year I came back to see the new content. I quit after 15 minutes because of the lag.

I will add my vote to the other great ARPGs mentioned in this thread. All of these are great if you loved Diablo 2.
  • Titan Quest: Immortal Throne - You need the "Gold" pack that includes the base game to play Immortal Throne. Immortal Throne includes all the content from the original game. Great underlying plot and environments, but not a whole lot of narrative. Graphic style is a lot like Diablo 2, and the quality still holds up today.
  • Grim Dawn - Have not tried it myself, but this will be a day-1 purchase for me when the retail product is ready. Made from the remnants of the developer that created Titan Quest.
  • The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing I & II - The game that is most like Diablo 2. I haven't had the chance to play a lot of it, but with the release of the second game I plan to play through both sometime soon. I actually purchased the first game without knowing anything about it beyond the Steam store page. All that was needed to sell me on it was the setting.
  • Path of Exile - Another game that is very Diablo 2-like. It is a lot of fun theorycrafting and playing around with the very large passive skill tree. The number of toon builds is practically infinite. Ability system has been compared to the materia of Final Fantasy VII. But be wary of people online who post builds that are very gear-dependent if you plan on doing some research, as the player-driven economy of currency items is very sketchy. A lot of fun if you can stand the lag.
 
Also Marvel Heroes, which I'm currently sucking some time into.

If you're a comic book nerd (i'm not) its got a lot of good references and characters. Its not a particularly good or deep game, but it hits that kill stuff and pick up loot nerve.
 
Titan Quest is amazing. The graphics are still good today, the talent trees are well done, the gear is well done and drops often, and it works great over LAN.

Love that game!
