I seen this on Fileshack and downloaded it. I got to say so far I am disapointed. I dont have any "Games for Windows" installed, in fact I only have 1 and that is Age of Conan.
Looking thru it I noticed at least one cross platform game, not sure how I feel about this.

Went to the "Marketplace" and they have nothing for sale, thought there would be something other than videos and demos, but nothing.

Anyone else out there install this yet, what are your thoughts?

It makes Stardock's impulse seem awesome in comparison. One would think Microsoft could produce something better with all their resources but apparently not.

It may turn out to be good. It is fairly new and needs time. Steam did not become great in one day.

Oh man the days when Steam was bad...they even made an icon where it showed steam anally raping you :D THATS how bad it was. Now its kickass.

Can you add custom games to the launcher like steam, if not i will pass. I love steam's universal launcher w/ in game freinds list.

right here folks

This standalone of GoWL just launched with the whole marketplace for windows about 2 weeks ago I think.

The funny things is..Xbox360 owners actually PAY for this shit..:p

But games for windows live itself has been floating around for a few years, and Microsoft really has not done anything interesting with it.
Maybe the marketplace and client is step in the right direction, maybe they'll add new content and maybe they'll open it up to the XNA creators club stuff like XBox Live gets; but really what Steam has done with their marketplace and community is everything Games for Windows Live should have been.

GFW Live made two big mistakes:
it was for pay at the same time Stream was rolling out every big selling point for free;
and they never had a title where their unique offering (cross platform play) meant anything. There were two or three totally forgetting cross-platform games, and it seems like they've abandoned that all together now.

GoWL has only been around for about a year and half. And true they they've made some dumb mistakes like you mentioned but it is going in the right direction now at least. And I remember steam being pretty much nothing for a long time too and then suddenly BAM they had all sorts of games other than valve games available.

War at Worlds was great! (cross platform game) :D loved it. Shadowrun...ya not so great.

well apparently too ignorant to know then.

google it. Been said to death.

Boooo..You pay $50 a year to...

1.Download demos on day 1..
2.Send text messages to your friends..
3.Play MP over the connection you already pay your ISP for..

Umm..THATS IT!!..Hence..its FREE on PC since the functionality is already there free of charge.

And since you feel the need to resort to"insults"that tells me your are the exact type of sucker MS preys on..

This is a joke right....this thing sucks major crap..... I will choose steam over this for a very very long time.

ignorant isn't an insult. sorry you feel that way.
and no I don't pay $50 a year.

You "saw" this on Fileshack, you didn't "seen" it.

Thanks for the english lesson, but this is not the right place for it!

I guess I was expecting something more like the Live service on Xbox, even the Silver service has alot to offer. I know theres alot of potential for it to do well, but I was still let down with what I saw (or is it Seen?).

Haha. Much offtopic here, but I'm foreign, can you explain why it's wrong to say "I've seen X on Fileshack" compared to "I saw X on Fileshack"?

"I've seen X on Fileshack" is correct because you are saying "I have seen X on Fileshack".

"I seen X on Fileshack" is not correct and is more Ebonics than anything.

"I saw X on Fileshack" is correct grammar.

You have it right, but the thread starter was saying "I seen X on Fileshack" which is a terrible butchering of the English language.

Not to mention you're paying for P2P, why no dedicated servers?

Going forward (starting with Windows 7) you're going to see Games for Windows Live being used much more. Its service and Xbox Live are going to integrate fully, and you can bet your ass that Xbox Live Gold accounts will remain but that free Silver accounts will get free online play within the next calendar year. Gold is planned to be getting more 'premium' features to draw subscribers.

Personally I cannot wait until Silver gets free online play so I can stop listening to whining PC elitists. Live in general absolutely dominates online gaming, and is the standard for centralized unified online networks... even when compared to PCs. Now the Games for Windows Live portion hasn't even been fleshed out yet. Comparing Games for Windows Live to anything else right now isn't even worth the effort, just wait until Microsoft integrates it all.

Microsoft has a new target in its sights ... and its called Steam. Once the money and resources are provided to combat it, expect to see a rivaled product that will feature cross platform gaming, and a list of features a mile long that Steam could never accomplish. I know you love Steam, I know you hate Microsoft and this silly Xbox subscription thingy-ma-bob but whether or not you want to accept it or not.

Its coming.

Right now its 'there', but might as well not be. You just wait, it will be free for Silver, there will be cross platform play, Avatars will be on your PCs and digital distribution charging you is Internet 2.0 at your PC doorstep.

Someone had to.

btw, you can text message and voice chat with people on xbox live.

Ever since I bought gears of war for PC and installed Windows Live back in 2007 I have been able to communicate with people on the 360 from my PCfree of charge.

Personally, I don't mind a little competition for Steam, it's good for us consumers. GFW adding a good feature would mean Steam would need to compensate for that.

But, I'd hate to see Steam go down because of this. Look what Live is now, just Microsoft stealing money for silly things like avatars and themes, plus I hate achievements. Imagine Steam with an ad for every pixel and a $ sign on every other pixel, that's what will happen if Steam goes down :(

1. Avatars are 100% free
2. When the Avatar Store opens in the spring, everything is 100% optional.
3. Themes are 100% optional.
4. Xbox 360 NXE dashboard currently has 1 spot within the entire system for advertisements and it can be easily avoided by flicking your finger up or down.
5. Steam has achievements
6. Last I checked Steam charges for much of its content.

I'm know what you're trying to reach for, but you're doing it wrong. Yes Microsoft is money grubbing and chasing $$, this is what we call business. Steam has made a great name for itself and its unlikely it'll ever go away, but you will most certainly see Games for Windows Live come to life over the next few years and likely rival if not outdo (features) what Steam could ever dream to accomplish.

Steams selling point is simplicity, and free updated content. Microsoft is coming... and its going to really become visible with the release of Windows 7. The biggest selling point won't be for you per say but publishers. Expect MS to model next gen security and account management (a la Xbox Live) into Games for Windows Live, allowing a top level way to ban pirate accounts, and ban pirates at an OS level (running Windows OS's).

Sounds crazy right? Just wait.

Steam already has ads. The steam update news window (can be disabled) and the store has ads.

I like the Games for Windows Live integration into games. It needs work as it was rushed out for GTA4, but I love achievements, it gives games more replayability. I probably wouldn't have completed all of the quest or joined all the guilds in Oblivion if it wasn't for achievements. I also enjoyed Fallout 3's integration with Live and I though having my friends list on my PC was nice. Just to see what my friends were up to. I like steam too, but I don't really use Steam friends list or really care for its achievements since not all the games have them.

Soon PC gamers will be able to pay for horse armor. Games for Windows Live FTL.

MS basically abandoned PC gaming in favor of the Xbox. They have nothing to offer. Their service is shit.

You make some good points.I(one of those whining PC elitists.;))have no doubt in my mind about M$ intentions. My biggest fear was that Valve was gonna sellout to M$.This is just MS taking a differnt approach to GFWL and not for the gamers benefit.

Not to mention you're paying for P2P, why no dedicated servers?

Is this the case? When waiting to play L4D, it prompts that it's waiting for a dedicated server to become available. Can take a few minutes sometimes too.

$4/month for Xbox Live isn't a big deal for a universal, convenient, and integrated online gaming service. Tracks stats, manages match making, friends list, etc. across all games. I could be playing a Games for Windows Live game on my PC and still be with arm's reach of my friends on XboxLive, send them voice/text messages (video too?). I could be on Windows Live messenger and IM my XBL friends while in a video chat with my girl 30 miles away. It just keeps me connected.

Granted if my friends were primarily PC gamers, we'd probably be rolling on Steam or Xfire instead and we'd be happy paying nothing.

For the most part that is the case. There are exceptions like EA games which run there own servers and can be dedicated.

There are advantages to this as well. With older less popular games on PS2 or from EA you would find that you could no longer play them online because the dedicated servers were shut down and you couldn't create one. This isn't a problem with P2P since you are the server. For consoles P2P as a base standard is the smarter way to hand the business model since game developers or M$ doesn't have to spend the money to continually support dedicated servers for each individual game that has multilayer.

There was Microsoft Gaming Zone, but MS abandoned it. Tough luck for many games that used that service for matchmaking.

Then look how quickly MS abandoned Shadowrun. Less than a year, and now you're out of luck. That was one of their own games that used Games for Windows Live.

Compare that to Valve or Blizzard who are still supporting games that are over 10 years old.

MS is unreliable. They don't care about games, and no one should trust them for continued support for game. They are a lot worse than EA.

ha! wow you use shadowrun eh? You mean that AWESOME game that everyone is playing and rushed out to buy and saved FASA (The developer). That game that although I haven't fired up again (I got it for free) but I think you can still play just don't have dedicated servers anymore. Could be wrong...but...um THE GAME WAS PANNED. It sucked so freaking bad. It's shadowrun! it was supposed to be an RPG. Just thinking how much that game changed makes me mad.

There is a reason Valve and blizzard support a 10 year old game. They were good games! Shadowrun does not fit in that category. But also it's not like steam is and old system like zone was or had a history of games that required steam either.

bleh, a load of rubbish if you ask me.

What can MS do which Valve can't? Steam is already far more feature complete than GFWL and has been through all the teething problems that such a platform has to face.

TBH they can both f-off, there is only 1 single good thing I can think off that GFWL will produce and thats competition for lower prices, since steam is a bit of a rip off for UK priced games especially with crap $ -> £ conversion rates.

Hey theNoid...did you ever think maybe PC gamers don't WANT to have cross platform play with console fucktards? I don't want to play Left4Dead coop with some 8 year old monkey squealing away and shooting up the team for a laugh.

I don't want an avatar. I don't want cross-platform play with xbox owners. I don't care either way about achievements.

Steam is rock solid and etched in freaking stone. Friends lists, store, stat tracking, achievements, voice chat and avatars already exist in some way in Steam and only stand to improve. Once companies all sell DRM free through Steam it's where I'll purchase my games from exclusively. Right now I only buy the boxed copy if the DRM is stuck in it anyway since I can always find it cheaper boxed than through Steam.

And console "fucktards" don't want to deal with aimhacks/wallhacks/etc. either. :p

I disable voice completely on both platforms if I'm playing with anyone other than my friends.

Shadowrun was actually pretty fun for a team based fps. It was well balanced, and fast.

What sucked was.. at the time, you had to PAY for Gold access (not enough silver players to find a decent game), It was VISTA only when Vista got a bad rap, you only got 9 maps, and you paid full price for a game with no single-player campaign. It would be like paying $50 just for TF2, then paying an additional monthly cost just to find people to play with.

I just bought the game again for $2.90 at 48-hour madness ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ (gave away my original copy to a friend). Apparantly, there's still a small community of xbox players who still play, and it's now free to cross-platform play for PC users.

Steam has a pretty good foothold for PC users, but I wouldn;t count out MS attempt to dethrone the current ruler. Look how MS dethroned many of it's competitors in its past.

4. To easily jump in and out of games with my friends
5. To chat with friends (up to eight) across games even when I'm not playing them.
6. At least for me very good connections and limited lag.

Shall I continue because the $4.16 cents a month I pay is really killing me.

Yeah, and when Zune started, the iPod was more feature complete...who has more features now? When MS guns for something, and they are serious, they don't dawdl. If they want to do much with GoWL, they'll catch up pretty quickly. Part of the whole software + services push.

Halo 2 did cross platform...but was meh.

And yes, paying 4 USD a year for a CLOSED PLATFORM where hackers are banned at the hardware (IE, console) level, is worth it. MS has gone through a lot of trouble keeping the xbox a closed protected platform, and rightfully so in my mind. I still game on PC, but also love my xbox.

You miss the point. The point is the lack of quality of MS, not the low ratings of Shadowrun got. MS is unreliable and untrustworthy. They should have fixed the game instead of abandoning it.

Microsoft has even closed down their good and successful game studios and ended their PC franchises, or switched them to making console games. Like Ensemble Studios.

MS is a PC gamers worst enemy. No one who's what they've done should ever trust them for their online gaming.
