So I took my Gamecube out to play some games. I bought it a couple years ago strictly for survival horror games I haven't yet played like Resident Evil 0 and the Resident Evil remake. I also bought Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes which was great. I'm looking for more. The other game I want to get is Eternal Darkness, but I would love some more recommendations.

What i don't want:

Racing games
Kiddie games
Fighting games

I am strictly interested in the best of the best Gamecube games. I have looked at a few "best of" lists which suggested: (if you have any personal experiences with these, let me know)

Timesplitters 2
Star Wars Rouge Squadron II: Rouge Leader
Viewtiful Joe
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
Beyond Good & Evil
Super Mario Sunshine
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
Metroid Prime

If you have any other games that stand out in your mind, i'd love to know. I'm starting to play through some older games and looking for new experiences. I think it's fun to go backwards in time sometimes to see what kind of gems you can find instead of always ranting and raving about the next generation. I could only have one console at a time back when the Gamecube was out so i never bought it or experienced any of it's games, but there sure seems to be plenty of great games in it's library. I'll be turning 27 this month, and the only Nintendo console I ever owned was a Nintendo 64. So i'm taking a break and going back to see what I missed and find some quality and fun experiences.

Odama? (But I like gimmicky games because I'm a terrible person)

Ikaruga
Killer 7
Resident Evil ZERO (I know you listed it, but I must reinforce this game)
F ZERO GX
Tales of Symphonia
Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and The Lost Ocean
Baten Kaitos Origins
Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes

I had a bout of nostalgia yesterday, the timing of this thread couldn't be better. Running some old games through Dolphin, just messing around with the settings and stuff, not really playing the games, but when I ran RE0 on it, holy wow does it look amazing. RE0 has got to be the best looking GC game for sure, running it a 3X native res, just gorgeous. Give it a go if you haven't yet.
Baten Kaitos is an excellent card based, turn based, RPG. AMAZING graphics, the second one as well. Tri-crescendo and Monolithsoft together, you know its full of art.

Viewtiful Joe is probably one of my favorite games for the system, if you like side scrolling beat-em-up, it's probably the best in the genre.

Metroid Prime is fantastic. Probably one of the few "FPSs" I actually liked playing with a controller. However, they made an updated version with the Wii, which is even better, mostly due to being able to point with the Wii-Remote. That single feature is not to be underestimated. It's sequel was also good (and also remade on the Wii).

Wind Waker is a classic. Enough of a classic that it is being remade on the Wii-U. You may consider waiting for that to drop, if for no other reason than to drop the cost of use on eBay. Seriously, that game still goes for at least $40 (for a complete clean copy. I personally don't consider buying anything else...)

I wasn't a fan of Mario Sunshine. Some people dug it, but I disliked that water canon mechanic. It's probably the most gimmicky Mario game made. It is far surpassed by Galaxy and of course 64. Personally I would skip this one, but to each their own.

Eternal Darkness - which is already on your list. I'm not a fan of horror games in general, but this game is so good that it transcends genre. Sadly it didn't sell well.

Killer 7 - A Sudo 51 game. Expect crazyness.

There is Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance which is a cult classic. This guy is also pricey to buy used, but it's a fantastic entry in a fantastic series.

mario sunshine
Rebel squadron
super monkey ball 1 and 2
viewtiful joe
luigi's mansion
zelda games
metroid prime
sonic legend of the rings
f-zero

I got nearly 100 game cube games and enjoy most of them

The ones I would recommend:

Twilight Princess
Wind Waker
Metroid Prime
Resident Evil 0
Resident Evil
Resident Evil 4

SPARTAN TOTAL WARRIOR,the game god of war took the idea from I truly believe.

A very fun game.

Skip the Zelda games and go straight for Okami! I'm shocked to be the first to recommend it.

Freedom Fighters was a great 3rd person shooter for its time. Not sure if it's aged well but worth a try.

You are the first to recommend it because it was never released on the Gamecube.

Yeah, I have Freedom Fighters on the PS2 and the PC. I loved that game a lot. Atmosphere, story, and everything was great for it.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I'm about to go on a eBay shopping fee.

Ikaruga

4 player games
Mario golf
Mario tennis
4 swords adventures (or whatever it's called)

I recommend avoiding windwaker. If you feel you absolutely must play it wait for the wii u release and get it cheap.

Second Sight. It's made by the people behind Timesplitters, but with a much better story. You have psychic powers that unlock as you play, and you go between the past and the present. It also has a very good cover system for the time it came out.

Lol, i'm not buying a Wii U. Maybe i'll get one years down the road, just like I now did with the Gamecube.

The Pikmin games.

Resident Evil 4 - I still turn on my Gamecube occasionally to play this game.

Also, Animal Crossing! I enjoyed it.

In that case I'd avoid Wind Waker for many years. The game design flaws outweigh the excellent art. I'd recommend taking a look if you can find it for under $10 - which will be difficult based on current eBay price.

Resident Evil 4 is one of my top 5 games of all-time. The game has made the rounds on the other platforms by now, but it was a GC exclusive for a long time.
I liked the plot for Eternal Darkness, but the gameplay never really did it for me.
You said no racing or fighting...so my other GC staples of Mario Kart and Smash don't really apply.

I'm kind of surprised that I can't find ANY Castlevania games for Gamecube. There's been a Castlevania game for almost every Nintendo console, but none for Gamecube? Weird. That must have been a huge disappointment for fans back when the Gamecube was still in circulation.

GBA
and all 3 are awesome classics.
Aria of Sorrow...Harmony of Dissonance..... Circle of the Moon... classics

The 3D games were not very good, but had great music.
Castle of Darkness starts of sooooo so good, fucking AWESOME Rock Dracula theme, your running up to the castle like a badass, then you get to the castle. I guess you could say the game deteriorates when you get to the 2nd area, but nah, I say right when to get to the castle and hit your first invisible wall. It's a series of doors to big box rooms with hardly any deviation till you reach the end after that. Terribly boring. And THAT was the last 3D game before Lords of Shadow. I don't recommend trying Lament of Innocence. You will lament that decision.

I was dissapointed, until I found out that the 3D Castlevania games coming out on the PS2 weren't all that great anyways.

You could always get Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. That game did come out for the Gamecube after the was released on the Wii, and I'd imagine it played better with a traditional control set.

True story.

I downloaded Dolphin and 30+ Gamecube games, upscaled the gfx and AA. Realized all the games pretty much sucked on the Gamecube. Deleted all of it a few days later.

I recommend SMS, RE games, LoZ games, after that not much appealed to me for that system.

It did, and IMHO, is the superior version because of it. Interesting factoid about the different versions of the game is that the entire game on the Wii is a mirror of the GC version. That means that East/Right on the GC is actually West/Left on the Wii. North/Up and South/Down are the same.

Now, why would Nintendo do such a thing? Statistics, of course! Nintendo believed that Link, who is traditionally a southpaw, would appear awkward swinging his sword with his left-hand when being motion-controlled by players, the majority of which are right-handed and would use the Wii remote in their right-hand. So instead of changing Link to be a righty on the Wii version, they inverted/mirrored the ENTIRE GAME.

Also, can't believe that no one has mentioned Metroid Prime 2 yet. While I preferred the first, the second was definitely no slouch and one of the best games on the system.

Yeah, I knew about the mirroring thing. If I remember correctly, Link was left handed because Miyamoto was left handed. I could be wrong, but you know.

Metroid Prime 2 is kind of a logical jump if someone likes the first one, but I still think the original is much superior to the sequel. I thought the puzzles were better and everything. I can't wait for another entry in the series, because I think it has a lot of room to grow still.

You must have played all 3.

Indeed, I agree. Echoes is Prime to the nth.
The feeling of despair and aloneness is pushed to levels not seen in the first game, and certainly not in 3. The constant hostile environment, that only offers safe zones in small cramped areas as you are constantly moving toward the next one, it doesn't stop there since you still traverse the light and dark world in the mid of all that. The planet is out to kill you, the developers captured that feel perfectly. That is what a Metroid games is supposed to be about, isolation, despair, and exploration. Echoes got it right, there's still nothing like it.

OP, since you like dark games, pick up Echoes.
But play the first Prime, first. It'll make Echoes less overwhelming. It's a pretty intense game.
