I am plannin on buildin my very first gamin server. I was lookin around just to find good and powerful server to run either 32 players cs 1.6 or 64 players css dedicated server. However, I am having hard time to decide to get either Xeon or Opteron cpu for my first gaming server. My spendin on this will be limited to 2.5 grands or less if possible. I have a list below what I should get for my next server:

Undecided:
Cpu (Xeon or Opteron)
Ram (2 Gb or 4 Gb)
Mobo
PSU
Case

Decided:
1 40 Gb sata HD
ATI X300SE PCIe or 9200 AGP (Dependin on the mobo)
FDD
CD Drive
Couple of Sunon Fans

Thx u and add any changes to this. :)

i think a xeon or opteron system may be over kill for a game server

ur suggestion? P4, Dual Athlon MP, s754, or s939 system? Help me lol.
id say s939, with 4 gigs of ram, an x2 3800, and a solid mobo that has built in video to save yourself some cash (take a look at the new ati chipset mobos with integrated video)

yeah, an amd x2 performs pretty similar to its opteron brother.. you really don't need ecc ram and stuff, your not running anythign critical.. plus, you will save a good penny.. :p

If you are planning on doing this from a cable or DSL connection at your home forget about it. You need some serious upload speed to be able to host a good server. It will be a huge waste of money.

If you want to spend 2.5K on a server, just rent a dedicated one in a data center.

I run CoD and BF2 servers from Dallas from Server Matrix (part of The Planet). For $199 a month we had a dual 2.8xeon with 1gig and it ran 3 CoD, 1 Teamspeak and UT2004 no problems. Pings all over the US were at most 80 for 90% of our traffic. Now we pay $237 for a BF2/CoD/UT2004 server with 2gig ram and SCSI drives.

Unless this is in a nice data center or is just to be used on your LAN, don't waste your money.

... I am buildin this server just to host it at my college. My college got OC3 connection. Also I use this new server for LAN purpose, too. Man help me out. I am bout to go with cell_491's suggestion.

I was combining MSI's mobo with Xpress200 chipset, X2 3800+, Xclio 450 watts PSU, 40 Gb sata HD, and nice Corsair 1 Gb x 2 value ram. I got around 800 bux for this. This is good price for my new server.

Yeah, I go to the same college as he does. Dual OC3s at Rochester Institute of Technology, one of the top 10 most wired colleges in the US. Lots of internet backbones here- 10MB download, 25MB upload ON campus. There's a lot of CS players at our college.

BigDaddy85 has a plan after he graduates, he'll be getting Verizon FiOS anyways (30MB dl, 15MB upl)

Shouldn't a 768K DSL connection suffice for hosting most games? I mean, maybe if you're hosting a MMORPG, or something, an OC3 connection might be needed; but for FPS I can't imagine a need for any kind of exotic internet connection.

Dont' worry bout the internet connection plz. What kind of server should I get?

If no one is willin to help me out with the server setup then that mean I will buy MSI mobo with Xpress200 and other parts that I posted recnetly.

Tyan K8DPro (S2882-D) w/integrated Radeon 7000 and 2GB's of ECC Ram.

Get dual Opteron 242's (Seriously cheap for Opty's)

Get two SATA drives and mirror them. If you want to keep it redundant. That's how I'd do it.

Another option is to buy a dell dual xeon server. Every once in a while you can get one with a free second proc. We have picked up some real cheap dual xeons before. Other then that yea a x2 or a pentium d with a lot of ram would be good. I would also recomend running dual hard drives.

an amd dual core 3800 or maybe the dual core 4200 (with 1 mb (2 mb total) cache)

2 gigs of ram

however, i wouldn't get an ati based motherboard, they haven't been tried and tested yet. get an nforce 4 and some cheapy pci video card. (5 dollars used or something)

Cheap Opteron or Xeon system sound nice. Same with Pentinum D and AMD X2 set up. Any more comment left before I buy either AMD or Intel server setup?

Here are some things for you to think about....

1) As far as I know... All of the "stock" (Valve d/l) CS:Source maps only have 32 spawn points..... I heard that one of the de_dust maps has 40. Never heard of any of the stock maps with more. So I hope that you have maps.

2) Game servers don't require good video cards. Save the money on the x300...buy an 8-32 meg PCI card for $25.00 - $50.00.

3) The connection you've got ( I am SO jealous!) is going to require a serious modem or card of some kind. I don't even know what would connect you to that network. If a Gigabit etnernet card will work....then you can get that on the mobo....if not - budget for this expense. And it could get expensive.

4) You need more hard drives.... not just for the storage space.... but for the access speeds that you can get with a RAID setup. Not RAID 5.... you need RAID 0+1 or better yet RAID 10 (Basically the same but the 10 will survive the loss of a drive where the 0+1 might not) This requires 4 drives mininium - and the more drives you can add to it the more you can bump your access rates.

5) Get a hardware RAID card -SATA II - in the $250.00 range - has to have a hardware XOR engine and onboard cache 128MB ECC would be nice. PCIe 16X interface or PCI-X depending on the motherboard.

6) Get 4 SATA-II drives (mininium - 8 if you can afford it) with NCQ ( Native Command Queueing - it speeds up multiple read/write requests), drive size depends on you.... but the larger drivers have faster access rates.

7) If you want the tip top of the heap of drives and controllers - SCSI u320 is the KING - nuff said. (4ea. 15K drives and controller = ~$1000.00)

8) Linux is going to be the OS of choice for a kickass server....you can exit the GUI and use those resources for the games server apps. Plus all of the Online games have Linux dedicated server versions. And save some bucks - it's free!

9) If you want to have more than 4 GB RAM then you will have to go 64bit....for the addressing. Intel calls this EM64T, it's on the high-end Xeons and the Dual core chips. The new Opterons and the Dual Core Opterons have it too. Also, the more RAM you've got, the more instances of the game-servers you'll be able to run or the more players/bots you'll be able to carry in each instance, without the app hitting the swap file too often.

10) High end Dual CPU motherboards will require ECC Registered RAM - read expensive for the fast stuff - PC3200 or higher. This is regardless of Intel/AMD flavors. So decide on single CPU-dual core or Dual CPU-Dual Core now. Be advised that any Dual CPU - Dual Core System will RAPE a single CPU dual core system.

Speed cost money son.....
How fast you want to go?

Build it in a 1u rack and colocate it.

Powerful and fast server at low cost. I don't need uber l337 server at all. I might go for RAID 0+1 with Sata II card and 4 Hd setup. Yes I will be using Linux for either cs 1.6 and css dedicated server. Also I will get cheap ass vc or integrated vc on mobo. I was curious which cpu will last me longer like 5 yrs or around? Also I will be usin it for 24/7 too. No ocing involved unless necessary like venice or somewat there. :)

1) True
2) True
3) It will be ethernet, and there is no such thing as a "modem" for OC3, and you can not plug a OC anything into a computer dircetly, it would go though a CSU/Router first. (possible exeption would be FIOS, I am not sure what they call thier endpoints)
4) RAID 10 would be nice, but needed?
5) RAID 10 does not use XOR, that is only for RAID 3/5/6, a total waste of money even if he does use RAID 10.
6) See #4
7) Well yes, but for a game server?
8) Not all games have Linux versions, and performance wise with games, Windows dedicated is suprizingly close to Linux.
9) True, but will he need more than 4GB?
10) There is a real drop off in scaling, even in Linux for 4 Procs vs 2 Procs, I doubt it is worht the extra cost over a X2 for his needs.

The reason I'm recommending more drives and a RAID 10 is because of the number of players that he wants.....
He said 64 in his post....that's a lot of read/writes to the server.
Also it will allow him to have "some" redundancy in case of hard drive failure.

As far as Linux dedicated server versions....
All of the Valve games have a linux server version - these were the games he was talking about. Plus BF2 does also.

Primary reason I mentioned 10) was because he wants to host a lot of players..... 64 is a huge number of players on a server.
If you can't get them all in one instance of the game, then you can start another 2-3 instances and let the additional procs run them.

Oh, BigDaddy....
Most server boards have no OC'ing ability built into the BIOS, so the CPUs are going to run at stock speeds and should last forever....barring accidents and power surges.

I'm not a great font of knowledge for running games but isn't the point of harddrive accesses kind of moot anyway be it 32 players, 64 players or 128 players really? Won't the server load the level into memory, and hence, only need to read it in once(where a fast read would be nice, but not needed?) since ram has significantly higher access times. I'm a staff member of a gaming group that runs some pretty big lans(60-80) from a single 5400 rpm harddrive for the game server and we've never had a problem with access times.

i agree with defakto bout the hd thing. how can the hd plays in big role of player management? this doesn't make any sense. I was readin www.steampowered.com forum that the minimum requirement for 32 players cs 1.6 dedicated server r 786 mb of ram and 2.2 ghz cpu. ---> http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=98416 so seem like cpu is more responsible with the registry, fps, bot, and other stuff, and the ram holds the data of the map, player, and slot for the player. In another hand, css requirement is around 1.5 times of cs 1.6 ds minimum requirement. Did i make this clear?

so i don't think the hard drive isn't an issue unless runnin a file, data, or storage server.

AMD X2 3800+ or 4200+ might be for me. Anyways I guess thx for the help. :)

Note: I am not very genius with server hardware btw.

I hate waiting for those "slow" servers to load a map or reload after a crash... so be sure to get something some what descent for hd... standard 40gb ide drive won't cut it, unless it's something 10k+ rpm. Wouldn't bother with raid, as software mode has overhead and hardware mode cost $$$. A single raptor should be nice enough. Tho a Fujitsu MAU3147 would hall ballz. :D

If he's only hosting one server, why would he need dual cpu's? steamservers aren't multithreaded so there is no added benefit.

Don't waste your money on Dual Core, or Dual CPU unless you get a killer deal it is not worth it if you are only hosting 1 server on the box.

Ignore everything rodsfree wrote because it will cost far too much money and is not worth it.

The harddrive you had chosen should suffice, just get a decent amount of ram (2GB at least) and you should be fine. Again if you want the maps to load extremely quickly you can get a raptor.

Linux is definitely solid, but there have been problems and glitches in the past with steampowered servers. Choose the operating system you are comfortable with.

he planning on hosting both a cs1.6 and css server at the same time

Wow, CS 1.6 servers will run on anything. Literally every persons machine in here could run 2-4 1.6 servers in linux with little or now sweat.

If it is a 32 person server, you will only need about 1 Gig of ram for 1.6 to be completely happy.

Also yes your cpu should be quick but once you are over 2 GHz, your appreciable benefits decline severely. I suggest you spend the money on ram if this box is for serving purposes. Its all Disk I/O and resident memory access. Decent speed hard drives should be a requirement, but a single 80 gig 7200 rpm 8 meg drive will more than suffice for a VALVE game based server.

BigDaddy85 said:
no, just one. cs 1.6 for now then later css.

Since you've downgraded what you want......( refer back to orginal post)
this will do as a CS 1.6 server and you can colocate it later.
Don't try to run more than 1 instance of the game server with 32 players.
Don't have ANY custom sounds, maps, skins. When you force a new player to D/L something you force lots of harddrive reads.
Don't run CS 1.6 and CS:S servers at the same time. I know because my clan has tried to run a CS:S and a HL2DM simultaniously on our server, and it continually freezes with more than 8 players in each. We have a dual P3 1ghz with SCSI hard drives. Same machine will run 20 players in CS:S fine. With a TeamSpeak server active and the website on it also.

All maps are d/l'd from harddrive. The server has it's copy of the map in ram, where it's keeping track of everything from player positions to bullet holes in the walls, the players must get theirs from the harddrive. If the player has the map, the server still has to validate it's map against the players map. More HD reads. And validate any custom files.
All this is before play even starts.

Plus, additional players force the OS to start swaping essential services to the swap file, if you don't have a LOT of ram.

Are you begining to see where a good hard drive system matters.

Additionally, dual cpu machines are nice because the first cpu can deal with the networking, hard drive access, other file requests, and general BS of computer crap while the second cpu runs the game server.

Ever been on a server that felt laggy, jerky and had little freezes - but you had a 40 ping to it?

Think about what might cause that.

As far as what I suggested "costing too much money"......
Didn't I read that you had a $2500.00 budget for this server???

If you are planning on spending that kind of money and not planning for the future uses of this server.....then please.... go ahead and enjoy.

If you want to be happy with any computer you build.... plan for 3 things.
1) Your Budget.....get the most bang for your buck.
2) The Purpose for this machine.
3) The Future - meaning future uses of the machine and possible upgradibilty of the machine.

If you and anybody else that reads my honest suggestions for your situation and disagrees with what I've suggested.... that's fine too.

I've made suggestions based on your orginal post and my experience with an active colocated game server. I've basically given you my wish list if I had the $2500.00 budget that you started with.

So....
What are you going to do?

If this is purely for server purposes....
You can drop the DVD and the floppy - all you need them for is installation of the OS - borrow them from another pc until you get everything installed. The CS 1.6 Game Server app you can download along with the maps and customized skins and sounds.

Verify that the motherboard will support the X2 dual core cpu.....Newegg says it only supports Athlon 64 FX/Athlon 64 - which are the generation before the X2. And the FX is very expensive.FYI...Neweggs search doesn't show a mobo with intergrated video that's compatable with the X2.

By the case - I see that you're not planning for future colocation - If you are planning on carrying this to Lan Parties then I would suggest a SFF barebones - The case you selected is mATX only. If you are not planning on the Lan party mobility thing then looks and size don't matter....get the cheapest case you can find... then invest in a GOOD power supply. I paid $120.00 for the last PSU I bought and the one I was looking at was over $200.00

If this if to be up 24/7/365 then also invest in a UPS.... Look on ebay for a good sized used one...new ones that are decent sized costs ~$300.00 - plus you can use it for your personal pc - it will stop the system resets from brown-outs and power surges.

You also might want to get a GigE NIC - that mobo is only 100BaseT - and a GigE switch (so you can connect more than 1 computer to your network connection) , if that's what your college is wired with.

Look at cheaper Memory.... the OCZ Performance stuff is for OCing.... In a non-OC'd server all you need is something like..this Rosewill Kit it'll save you about $30.00 and it has tighter timings than the OCZ value kit - plus the lifetime warrenty. And it'll run in dual channel mode also. (same size generic chips will go into dual channel mode....there is nothing different about the memory.)

You can think about droping the keyboard and mouse too...they are just needed for installation (set the BIOS to "Halt on All - Except Keyboard") - you can borrow from another pc when you need too....Just manage the server through ont of the VNC apps like TightVNC or UltraVNC, this will also get you used to remote management of a server - in case you ever colocate.

If you can get the extra $100.00 then get the 74Gig Raptor instead of the Seagate 80Gig. You'll be happier with it in the long run - it's got a 5 year warrenty and is a faster drive.

Spend the money on a good quite heatsink/fan....like this one ...it's designed by ThermalTake and built by sombody else....it's much better than the stock HSF....I've bought 5-6 of the socket 478 versions of this one and couldn't be happier with them. They are nearly identical to the ~$40.00 Thermaltake HSF.

Luck

My game server consists of:
P4 2.0Ghz 400FSB
512MB Ram DDR400
Gigabyte Board...
Nvidia GeForce 2 Ultra 64mb
120GB WD HDD
CD-Rom and either a Floppy or Zip Drive

Running Windows Server 2003

It gets the job done...its for small lan parties, but im sure it would do barely ok for internet gaming.

k i modified my wish list:

Chintech VNF4/Ultra s939 $83
Sapphire X300SE HyperMem $48
TT Silent Purepower 480W $72
AMD 64 X2 3800+ $405
Corsair ValueSelect 2 Gb (2 x 1Gb) $199.50
WD 74 Gb Raptor $183
Sony CD-ROM driver $14.99
7 Sunon KD1208PTB2 80mm fans $26.60 <-- for the case

My friend is willin to give me his old TT XaserIII case. Also I got spare keyboard lyin around.

What do u think with this setup? :)

Edit: Total price is $1032.09

extra $100, I would go for cas2 ram, I had their value select mem, xms stuff much better/faster.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145575
extra $20... you should get something thats atx2.0+ 24pin
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817104934
or
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817103512
I run this one, and so does a friend, but both should be good whatever way you want to go.
Granted your not going heavy video card, I think it's just worth the extra $20.

As for your mobo, I don't see a 2nd ethernet, and nvidia one sucks... sorry it just does, grab a intel gigabit ethernet card off ebay ($20) or intel/3com 10/100 ($5) ... don't get 3com gigabit, broadcom drivers are sucking in linux right now.

I don't need kick azz mem. I am sure that's good for ocing btw. Also for psu both em looks good to me. I might go for blue psu by Fortron. :)
