I am currently living in a different state than my son (due to job transfer, waiting on selling house to move everyone), but we would like to play a game with each other. Since we have different schedules we can rarely get online at the same time. That rules out games like BF2 and the like.

I know there used to be games that would allow you to play a turn based game via email. Does anyone know of such a game? Diplomacy might be a decent game for our circumstances, but is there anything else out there? Play with two decent PCs (not that a turn based game over email will tax any modern PC), etc.

Thanks in advance.

Age of Wonders 2
or
Age of Wonders 2 Shadow Magic

They are both turn based games and can be played via email. They are not that old and are excellent games. The two mentioned are both the same game except that Shadow Magic adds a couple more races, improves quite a few things, and adds new features.

I downloaded the Age of Wonders 2 demo last night. Looks interesting. I am pleased there were a few more replies this morning, as I was hoping for a variety to choose from.

The Battlefront site looks fascinating. We enjoy playing Axis & Allies (board game as well as on computer), and both Battlefield 1942 and 2. This looks at first glance to be a combination of the two, which should translate to days of fun. :)

I need to figure out how to get the game setup via email, but that shouldn't be too difficult. Thanks again for all the suggestions.

there was a cool x-com clone that came out recently.
4 sides, space marines, grey aliens, the hive (aliens), and robots (terminaotrs)

dont remember the name.

+1 for age of wonders 2

i think any of the hex based games will work. (fantasy general anyone?)

also i think dominions 3 can do it like that.
the battles there are all computer controlled, you only set pre battle strategy.
Very highly recommended game!

oooh and look what a little googling found

If you do end up getting Age of Wonders 2, I highly recommend Age of Wonders 2: Shadow Magic. It improves Age of Wonders 2 and adds lots of stuff and it is stand alone.

I also see someone mentioned Warlords. I'm not entirely sure if Warlords 3: Reign of Heroes has play by email but I would say yes it does have that feature- it is also a really cool turn based game although it is very old..
