game hiccups/lag

I've been having trouble with this for a while, but every game I play online results in a hiccup/lag spike every couple minutes while playing.

Now I say "hiccup" because it's not really a lag spike. My ping doesn't spike, but the gameplay just pauses for a second or two and then resumes. So that's why I see it as a hiccup. The sound still plays, but the screen and graphics freeze for a second.

At first I thought it was my internet, but a friend of my lanning at my house didn't have the problem, so that narrowed it down.

I just got a new video card, so that's not the case either. I've reseated my wireless network card, thinking maybe that may be the issue, but again, I'm still having this problem.

Has anyone experienced something like this before, or know of a way to resolve this. I custom built my computer about 3 years ago.
 
what os are you running? what background apps are present? if you close down everything in the system tray, does the problem go away? do you have the latest bios for your motherboard and drivers for everything on the system? do you have any extra usb devices attached?

I have windows xp pro, and the problem persists even with programs closed and with extra usb devices plugged in. I've checked my video card driver, but not my motherboard drivers. Would that be a huge issue? It's just really frustrating to deal with.

What's the chance of this being a CPU issue or RAM issue? My ram is relatively new.
 
currently i have 4 gigs installed. I didn't think windows xp could go much higher when i first built my computer several years ago.

Tell your game to hold its breath and swallow three times. Works for me every time. :)
 
Why is it that in my system properties box, it shows my RAM as 3.37 GB of ram. I'm supposed to have 4 gbs installed. In my bios it shows 4098 MB of RAM, which of course is 4GB...

My motherboard is the Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R

I have a Q6600 CPU

supposed to have 4 GB of G.Skill RAM
DDR2 800 CL5-5-5-15

I now have a 768mb GTX 460 GPU

And this happens in any game, there's no specific game that is causing this. Counter-strike source, condition zero, TF2, some online indie games, etc.. - All seems to have the problem.

edit: I just checked the drivers for my motherboard, there was only an update for an audio driver, so I can't see there being any issues with the motherboard.
