Galaxy Note 5

The Note 5 is my last Samsung phone I'll own. And I typically get Nexus phones or HTC, but passed on the M9, and should have picked the 6P over the N5. My mistake, and this year I will get the One M10 possibly, or the Nexus-N this Fall.[/I]

Lol, yeah right. I'm gonna quote this again when you get the Note6/Edge+2 next year. :p

When you unlock the bootloader on the Note does it still blow the knox fuses as it did in previous versions?

What happened to that agreement the manufactures made with Google, with promised updates of 90 days after Google releases it ? I'm cool waiting 3 months after the latest Nexus gets the update, but 6 months, no.

If I recall correctly, that agreement was specifically about security updates, not major releases. Frankly, getting timely security updates matters more to me than getting Marshmallow (which doesn't really add much compared to Lollipop). As long Samsung keeps the security patch level up-to-date, I could tolerate Marshmallow getting pushed back more.

Shame that such a powerful phone like the note 5 will be abandoned in 2 years. I really freaking hate that about android. I paid 650 for the device. I'd like to get software updates for at least 3 to 4 years. I hate ios but at least I know my phone will be current for awhile.

Yeah, but iOS runs like garbage on older devices as well despite them updating it. Many people regret updating at that point. And there's always other ROMs if you're that concerned about it. Staying on a previous version of Android is for the better sometimes as well, it's not like you're going to be restricted by not being on the latest and greatest Android at all times. Plenty of people are still happy using Kitkat and Lollipop on their phones for the foreseeable future.

I just got the Note 5 (64gb) a couple days ago and am liking it with a couple exceptions.

Google voice doesn't always work. Sometimes I have to open it in order for the phone to react to me saying "ok Google", my S4 did the same thing. Could this be a launcher issue?

What is the consensus on running this phone stock? Obviously it's better on a custom ROM, but I'll be stuck on Verizon and can't do that. Will there be any disappointments? Currently on a Nexus 5, but custom ROMming has kind of lost its appeal to me. I do like stock Android, but I don't mind extra features as long as they don't detract.

Have an iphone 5 with broken 3.5mm jack which was released in 12. Still running just fine with iOS 9 as a streaming remote (YouTube, netflix) for my chromecast. Maybe 0.5 second slower than the Air 2 in comparison but I would say it is still very snappy IMO.

I don't think your use case is quite what he was referring to. Use the phone as a daily driver and see if it slows down. You're only currently using a very limited amount of apps, I'd be surprised if that caused a slowdown.

Its not a big deal, we have an older 5 that runs fine on current iOS. The only issue was at the very beginning and then those issues were patched.

I just picked up 2 of these from Costco - they're issuing a $300 Costco gift card for each new line activated with 2-year payment plan on Verizon. So, the wife and I took off with 2 Note 5's and $600 in in-store credit. YMMV, but it looks like the deal is good through the 15th if anyone else is interested. http://membershipwireless.com/

It's great. All things considered, Touch Wiz is improved, and you there are plenty of non-rooted theme managers to make it look and act the way you want your phone to look and act.

I've had the phone running stock since I got it 5 months ago. My only gripe is the size. I knew full well what I was getting into, and I love everything I do with this phone. But I came from a Nexus 5, and that phone was the motherfucking sweet spot. So I'll probably stick with this one for another 7 months and switch to something smaller next.

How do you guys feel about the non-removable battery and the lack of an external SD card? That is what I'm on the fence about with this phone... hoping you all have some advice on that. I still run a Galaxy s4 since I love that I can just pop the back off and swap out the battery... no need to let my phone sit with a cable plugged into it.

These are not a concern for me personally. I have spare chargers all over the place - bedroom, office, kitchen, car, work, backpack. I have a Nexus 5 and at worst I've only ever needed a 10% top off at the end of the day for my usage, but I usually can plan for that and plug it in at or after work before going out. The Note 5's battery is even bigger, and reports show screen on time of ~40% more than my current phone, so I have no fear there at all. I figure you can always carry another travel battery pack with you for a full charge as well. With fast charging, it makes this even less of a hassle. While I agree phones are stupid thin these days, all of these things I just mentioned doesn't really justify a thicker phone for a larger battery for me. I can definitely see the argument for it, but it doesn't bother me in the least with all these options.

For storage, I was fine with 16GB on my Nexus 5. Everything is cloud based these days, there's not much point in local storage anymore (again, IMHO). A 32GB Note 5 is more than enough. Though, if this is a concern for you, you can get a USB microSD card to keep with you at all times - solves that problem pretty easliy. Thanks, I've done a bunch of research and that seems to be what people think 6 months later as well. I was also a bit concerned about the size. I think it will be a minor inconvenience, but I use my phone for so much, I think the tradeoff is worth it. I have run into a bit of a challenge finding a good protective case though, because I definitely don't want to make it too much bigger. I settled on the Verus High Pro Shield - we'll see how it goes.

I actually have that case haha. Right after I posted that comment, I removed it and it's much more comfortable to 'one-hand-the-bitch'. I'm not sure if there are any less bulky cases than that one.

Had this phone for a couple weeks now, and overall I like it a lot. I'm just getting used to the size now, but it's good. The extra screen real estate is well worth a little one-handed awkwardness every now and then. Battery life is great. On my heaviest day I only got it down to about 5%, but usually I only use about 50% or so, which gives me plenty of confidence to get through the day, even if I go out after hours. I do notice some stutter and lag once in a while, nothing serious, and I don't know what to chalk it up to - TouchWiz, Android, bloatware (which has been all didabled), or a combination of the three. I have high hopes for the 6.0 marshmallow update though. It breathed new life into my Nexus 5, so I hope it improves the battery and makes things a bit smoother, though like I said, I like it a lot as is.

Only one major issue. The stock keyboard sucks hairy donkey balls. It's word replacements and spell check are abysmal, and I was never able to figure out its timings to make a habit of avoiding it. Junk. I tried the stock Android keyboard, but it was huge on this screen and actually harder to type on because of it. Now I'm using the SwiftKey keyboard to type this, and it seems to be doing a great job. I think I'll stick with this for now.

Keyboard/ spellchecker is still bad. :(

Question for you all: do you take photos on 16:9 or a different aspect ratio?

Anyone else using a Note 5 with Marshmallow update and Google Voice? When I try to place a call, it just cancels it instead of asking to place with or without google voice. I can't isolate the issue, but it seems to happen on my first call after having the phone in standby for a little while. It's not an issue when placing several calls sequentially.

Ok, I just got the 6.0.1 update and it seems a bit more fluid. I placed one call and it seems like google voice is working now too, but that's only one data point.

Anyone else have anything to say about the 6.0.1 update?
