LOL no :)

First download the ROM, and download the Kernel. Throw those both onto the phone.

WARNING: Before Flashing Any Rom, Make Sure To Remove All Registered Fingerprints By Going To Settings -> Lock Screen And Security -> Fingerprints Then Press "MORE" Then "Edit" Tick All The Registered Fingerprints And Press "REMOVE"!

...ALWAYS PERFORM A FULL WIPE WHILE FLASHING THE ROM/UPDATES...

TWRP RECOVERY INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS (Recommended)

* First Thing You Want To Do Is Reboot Into TWRP Recovery And Backup Your Device! (Boot, Data, System, etc...)
* Download DARTHSTALKER NOTE5 Rom.
* Place The Rom Into Your Internal Storage.
* Now Reboot Into TWRP Recovery.
* While In TWRP Recovery, Press "Wipe" And Then "Swipe To Factory Reset".
* Now Press "Back" And Then Press "Advanced Wipe".
* Now Select "Cache", "Dalvik Cache", And "System" And Then "Swipe To Wipe".
* Install Rom To Go Into The Rom's Aroma Installer.
* Choose The "Full Wipe" Method.
* Choose Any Of The Apps You Want.
* Now Install The Rom Until Its Finished.
* The Aroma Installer Will Then Reboot Your Device.
* Once Rebooted And In The Setup Wizard, DO NOT Touch For 2 Minutes!
* After 2 Minutes, Reboot The Phone... DONE!
* Now Go And Enjoy DARTHSTALKER NOTE5!

I'm no programmer whatsoever, I just watched a ton of videos and read the tutorials very carefully. If there's a good step-by-step guide like Max Lee's, it's pretty much foolproof, just follow it to a "t".

Trust me once you have DarthStalker v2.0 up and running with Arty97 Kernel 5.0 tomorrow, you will be blow away how smooth the Note 5 is, and will have some extra special customizations from the ROM.
 
It's definitely been an education! I've noticed something odd when powering on the phone. I see a small message in bright red letters at the top left that says kernel is not seandroid enforcing. When I'm at the home screen, there's a red phone icon at the top left that leads to another error message REG90 wifi calling error. My guess is I screwed up something.

Oh, and I finally figured out that you hold volume up and power to boot into TWRP recovery. DOH!! :confused:
 
You need a ROM installed A.S.A.P. that will get rid of any of these issues.

This one is rated to be very rock solid stable, just nothing crazy extra included, but a very good quality, buttery smooth ROM. I would install this one now, it was just updated a few days ago, and all posters say it fantastic and stable. Actually reading the last few pages of this ROM thread, I think I am gonna jump to it as well, everyone saying R2.0 is just smooth, and stable, and nothing to report, it just works.

Flashing Instructions For Clean Install

**Twrp recovery**
* CREATE BACKUP FIRST! *
Then continue
Go to advance wipe
Select dalvik cache, system, data, and cache
Wipe twice
Flash rom
Reboot
First boot may take 5-10 minutes to load.
Once booted let phone sit for 3-5 minutes without touching to let everything settle in.
Reboot once more
Done!


Download the ROM, and throw that into the Phone, and then download the 5.0 kernel, and throw that into the phone also.

Reboot to Recovery, do the Wipes / System Factory Reset stuff, etc... Flash this ROM, and then before clicking reboot, Install the 5.0 kernel, and then reboot, and set everything up.
 
I think I might have bricked this thing. It's been stuck on this screen for over 25 minutes.



Nothing I do gets me anywhere, except I can get to the blue download screen if I hold the power, vol down, home buttons. I just want to factory reset and start over at this point.

Can you reboot into Recovery again ?
 
Galaxy Note 5: How to Boot into Recovery Mode

Galaxy Note 5 Recovery Mode

Power Off the Galaxy Note 5, hold power button down for 20 to 30 seconds
Then once off, Press and Hold the Power Button, Home Button and the Volume Up Button at the Same Time
Continue Holding These Buttons Until You See Some Blue Text at the Top of the Screen
When You See the Text ‘Recovery Booting’, Then You Can Let Go of These Three Buttons
Now Wait Until the Galaxy Note 5 Fully Boots into Recovery Mode
 
Damn, you really are trying to help. That's awesome. Sadly however, the thing won't turn off no matter how long I hold the power button.

I saw one thread on reddit that suggested downloading a stock ROM and flashing through Odin. But, I can't find a stock ROM and I don't think you can flash ROMs through Odin.

Force restart is by holding the power and the volume down buttons at the same time for about 10 seconds.

And then you should be able to get back into Recovery, by press all three at once, the Vol. Up + Home key + Power button

But I would think, if you are able to boot back up into TWRP Recovery again, I would do another System wipe erase, and again flash the ROM + Kernel, that has to work. Unless you somehow Odin the wrong file somewhere along the way ? But you should be on the correct TWRP, you should have the correct COI5 modem, so not sure then ?

I'll try to help through here so it doesn't fill up my thread.

Looks like the battery is drained. He' ll want to go into download mode and charge the phone a bit. Download mode is power, home, and volume down. Once it's charged some he can then use odin to flash the stock tar found here.

After he has the phone up and running again he can follow the instructions in that same thread to root and install a custom kernel.

Not sure if this has been answered already, but is there a way to change when the Note 5 will use Wi-Fi over cellular data? My wife's Note 5 has chewed through 20+ GB of cellular data this month, while only using 9 GB over Wi-Fi. She told me that the phone wouldn't stay connected to any Wi-Fi network. Is this something similar to IOS' "feature" that prioritizes speed over not burning up cellular data and getting a massive phone bill?

If WiFi is available, then it should connect to it regardless. Though there is an option on most phones to "use mobile data when WiFi signal is weak." So maybe uncheck that if she might be working near the outer range if your AP.

Also, I would go into the "data usage" settings in the phone to see what apps are using the most cellular data, then check the box to restrict them from using cell data if she only uses them at home. I'm guessing it's some sort of media service using it all?

Mainly Netflix and YouTube, the kids like to use our phones to watch shows sometimes.

I actually tried out that ForeverLoco ROM. It's ok, way too much bloat and million apps come bundled with it.

I like DarthStalker how it uses Aroma Installer allowing you to pick and choose which apps you want.

How do you like it ?

Think I'll install DarthStalker v2 tonight.
 
I had some lagging and one full freeze in the short time I used DS v2. Went back to the stock ROM and all was fixed. I think I'll try the first version of DS again and see if I get any of the same problems.

In the few days I've had my Note 5, I gotta say I love the phone. It's a great piece of hardware, but the Android OS is leaving me with a big fat feeling of meh.

My overwhelming reaction to the Note 5 is...

I soooooooo wish I could run iOS on it!!

Did you flash Arty97 Kernel ?
 
The freeze happened as I was applying the Material theme. It lagged and/or got choppy while web browsing or any time I scrolled through a few screens. I'm still on stock and everything is fine, but I'll keep tweaking and ROMing to try to find a good balance of speed/performance.

While the Theme is being applied, that will always slow the phone down temporally. That happens even on my Nexus 6, which was tweaked and overclocked to run super warp speed smooth, but applying themes would slow it down, then a reboot after theme is installed, and that lag is gone forever.

Problem was that the phone didn't just slow down. It stopped. For 11 minutes until I did a hard reboot. :eek: After rebooting, I tried re-applying the theme and it worked. The lagging while scrolling was still there until I went back to stock.

I just did a fresh install of DarthStalker 2.0, holy mother of God, this ROM is off the charts silky smooth, and warp speed fast.
 
So following the news that the Nexus 6P and 5X were not coming to carriers (at least, for now), and on top of the fact that my Nexus 5 took a spill and needs its screen completely replaced, I broke down and got the Note 5.

Now, I'm no power user in the slightest. I've rooted phones in the past with the help of some guides, but never felt the need to mess with the slimmed down Nexus 5 I had for 2 years. I've also heard the horror stories pertaining to Touch Wiz and carrier bloatware.

My initial impressions? This phone does absolutely everything I need it to, the battery life is amazing, I'm in love with the pen/note features, and the screen and camera are stunning. Touch Wiz is really not an issue, at least for me. I installed a free theme from the Samsung store and got rid of that absolutely retarded and sluggish Briefing screen and it's been smooth sailing so far. Not to mention the fast charging speeds are just something I never expected.

Downsides? I absolutely do want to root this phone in the future, solely due to the redundant apps I never use, and configuring themes (I'm a bit of a customization junky). I may hold off until I get my Nexus 5's screen fixed, as I'll need a backup phone in case I fuck things up.

TLDR: I was a skeptic, now I'm a believer. I wouldn't say it's the BEST phone on the market (I haven't tried the Moto Pure) but the Note 5 does everything I want it to, and more.

I'm going to try it again after I return from the dentist. Last night, I wiped my Note clean and installed the basic stock ROM. It's as if I just opened the box for the first time. We'll see how DS 2 works for me this time.

I absolutely love this phone, and I'm one of the biggest iPhone junkies on [H]. The hardware is nothing less than superb. Screen, speed, build quality, stylus, even the way the phone feels in my hand. Superb! It makes my 6+ feel like a cinder block. And, I love just plugging it into my computer to transfer files. No fucking iTunes!!!

However, I'm really struggling with Android. It feels big, clunky, and awkward compared to iOS. And, for all of Android's vaunted customization capabilities, there's nothing it does that can't be done on a jailbroken iPhone. Even bypassing the horror of iTunes is possible with some 3rd party apps and proper tweaking.

I'm not giving up on my Note 5, yet. It's won me over. Android, you've got more to do to keep me interested. Please... keep me interested!! I don't want to return my beautiful Note 5.
