Galaxy Note 5

Where's the stinkin fast wireless car charger mount? That's where it's really useful as long as it's designed properly so it doesn't drain your car battery when phone isn't sitting on it.

^^ Ready to do it. I'm especially interested in that :cool: Darthstalker ROM!

Still waiting on T-Mo's shipping e-mail.

Off topic, but have a question;

I actually really like Google Messenger for texts, works 100% bulletproof all the time. But only one complaint, I wish I could turn off Heads Up notifications from popping up on the home screen or when surfing the web or in other apps.

I liked with stock Messages, I could turn off Heads Up, and just have the new message displayed in the Status Bar only, it would roll the message across the status bar, and I loved that, but not sure I can set up Google Messenger to do the same ?

Is there a Message app that will not resize your picture when sending it? I don't have the Note 5, but I have the edge + and this is one of the annoyance I have with this phone. I want to send the pic on original size. For video? forget about it.

Not a true cell network message app replacement but I use Whatsapp mainly nowadays and they do not compress their images as far as I know.

But for my understanding, whatsapp needs to be installed for both parties in order to send text.

MMS has a size limitation. Haven't tried myself but perhaps look into Hangouts with XHangouts add on but it requires root access.

Thanks Mi7ch. I guess there's no way around of that MMS size limitation except to root the phone. This is where iPhone shine with their independent iMessage server. You can send any size of pics and videos without compressing the file.

Why not Google Photos sharing? It's kind of like iMessage but with intelligence.

My T-Mo Note 5 was delivered today. :) I just turned on the phone and did the basic set up for this pic. One thing is certain. Android/TW can look every bit as ugly as stock iOS. :p

Of course, it's decidedly unfair to put the Note next to a jailbroken/severely tweaked 6+. I need to root and ROM this thing to unlock its hidden potential. Will do so today.

Nice, ok get a good ROM going, + Arty97 Kernel = MUST HAVE ( trust me, it is even better than stock kernel, there are ZERO issues when running this kernel )

- Root the phone with Odin
- Odin TWRP Recovery
- Odin latest COi5 modem
- Then do the ROM install in Recovery
- Then the kernel install Recovery

I recommend one of these two ROM's;

DarthStalker is supposed to have v2.0 out later today or tomorrow morning
http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmo...m-darthstalker-note5-version-1-aroma-t3212091

This is a very good solid basic ROM;

ThrashROM
http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-galaxy-note5/development/deodexed-stock-n920taoge-t3186037

Arty97 Kernel ( Get 5.0 )
http://forum.xda-developers.com/note5/development/arter97-kernel-galaxy-note-5-t3189907

Install the ' Material ' Theme from the Samsung store, that's a must have.

Stellar advice! I really want to see that Darthstalker ROM on my Note. I'll get to all of it tonight.

That 6 plus looks taller than the note 5 even though it's got a smaller screen.

The Note 5, is shorter, narrower, and lighter than the 6S Plus, while also having a larger 5.7" screen compared to a 5.5" screen.

The iPhone 6S Plus is way too large for a 5.5" device. It's funny when you compare other 5.5" devices next to the 6 Plus, look at the LG G3 next to the 6 Plus, it's a frigging joke, they both have the exact same size screen.

Okay, first 2 Android/Rooting rookie questions...

1. There are 12 separate folders in the Arty97 5.0 kernel folder. Which one should I use?
2. Can a rooted phone be restored to factory settings?

T-Mobile Note 5 = N920T model. So choose the 5.0 kernel ending like 920T.

Yes you can restore to Factory settings later on. And if your worried about a rooted phone bring flagged when returning it on Jump in Demand for a newer phone later, don't, they don't check don't care.

Definitely look up the ' Material ' theme in the Samsung Theme Store once you get booted up again after installing the ROM. It is a paid theme like $1. There's also ' Material Dark ' for free, same theme just dark grey backgrounds.

The Material theme makes a massive difference in how the phone looks. It pretty much makes the Touchwiz ugliness disappear

Having to pay money for a non-ugly eyesore theme...that is funny.

It was made by an independent developer on XDA, not Samsung, but it's put up on the Samsung Theme store. So it's nice to show support by paying the measly $1.

Tyler did you get your Note 5 rooted and ROM'd ?
Nope and it's driving me nuts. No matter what I've tried, Odin does not recognize my phone. I've installed the Samsung USB drivers, tried several different cables and USB ports. Nothing worked. Incredibly frustrating. :mad:

As for the phone itself, the 5 is the first phone I've used that feels every bit as high quality as an iPhone. The build, materials, and feel are excellent. With all these rooting problems, I find myself wishing I just could run iOS on my Note.

Also, after trying again, this morning, my phone is stuck on the green downloading screen. Any suggestions to get it back to normal?

Hmm, that's very strange. My Wife and I both got Note 5's a month ago, I rooted and installed custom Recovery on both, really no issues or hurdles.

I watched this video, and followed it step by step, place close attention to the very specific files he mentions to download and install, and he has links in the Description below the video; Also watch the video very close as to how he uses Odin, rewatch that part several times to make sure you are following the steps correctly

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dhue0Da3ysc

- Go into the Developer Settings on the phone, enable OEM Unlock
- Download and install Samsung Kies on your computer
- Download Odin3 v3.10.7
- Download the root kernel, not the Arty97 kernel yet, you'll use that one later with the ROM, but just for Root you will use a different kernel, the N920T root kernel
- Put that one N920T root kernel in a folder on your Desktop, I named mine "Root" also put Odin in there.
- Go to your " Root " folder on Desktop, double click Odin, then you'll see Odin again, double click that too, and then you'll see a blue Odin, right click that one " Run as Administrator " And then the Odin terminal thing will pop up. You want to click the rectangle box ' AP ' and that should take you to your " Root" folder, click the N920T kernel you put in there, and press Start in Odin.
- First make sure you are in that special mode on the phone when doing this. Power phone off, and then when off press and hold the Down Vol + Home + Power Button at the same time, you'll get to a blue screen, and then press Vol. up to continue, and then plug the USB cable into the phone.

Really, just watch that YouTube video very closely, I kept rewinding to certain parts a bunch of times, and it worked, that video was a tremendous help, and great tool to get my Note 5 rooted

And then installing TWRP Recovery after that, is super easy. You just grab the latest TWRP .tar file for the Note 5 N920T, and use Odin-AP to flash it, and that's it, it you'll have Recovery installed.

Thanks for all the tips. I'll check out that video right now. I've got all the correct files downloaded. It's just this stumbling block with Odin not recognizing my phone that's got me so worked up. Every time I plug in my phone, I get that USB device not recognized pop up. I think I'm also going to try rooting via Linux on my MBP. Probably won't make a difference, but I'm ready to try anything.

So bottom line. Watch those different videos I posted, plus the website link. You will get this done following all their instructions.

I'm watching that Max Lee video right now. He's having the same problem getting Odin to recognize his phone. :p

However, I just installed a newer version of the USB driver and Odin worked! So, on with the root!

Sweet :)

After you are rooted, then you need to install TWRP Recovery, which will be super easy after all this Root stuff :cool:

TWRP for noblelte
https://dl.twrp.me/noblelte/twrp-2.8.7.1-noblelte.img.tar

Download that, and put in your "Root" folder, and then use Odin-AP to flash it, just like you do for the Root, again your phone needs to be in that blue screen part, by powering phone off, and then back on with the three buttons at once, etc...

Once rooted, and TWRP Recovery installed, you also need to update to the latest Modem / Radio, before flashing the ROM;

Doing the Modem install is super easy and fast, just Odin-AP the file in that special blue mode, and flash it, and you're all good.

TRLTETMO-COI5-MODEM.tar.md5
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24052804347823075

That's the file.

Got the TWRP and modem files installed. Now, should I install that Arty kernel and Darthstalker ROM?

Always the Kernel install after the ROM first. You want the 5.0 kernel for the N920T

Here's the file;
http://www.arter97.com/browse/exynos7420/kernel/5.0/n920tw8/arter97-kernel-n920tw8-5.0.zip

You flash that zip in Recovery.

But you first do the ROM install. You can do DarthStalker v1.0 now, that's what I'm running, but he said tomorrow v 2.0 will be released and he said bug fixes and a major release. But I am running v1.0 now for a week, and it's rock solid, except just one thing, the Stock Messages text app is funky, not sending texts all the time, he said that will be fixed in v2.0 tomorrow. But if you use Google Messenger like me or Textra, then it doesn't matter, those work 100% perfect on this ROM right now. Other than that, the ROM is damn near flawless for a 1.0 release, really great work

He said this earlier his morning; " Darthstalker V2 is now in testing phase! A few selected users who pm'ed me will test it out and if all goes well tomorrow will be the release of one hell of a nice update! "

After you're all set up, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this theme to run;
