This was exactly what I was expecting. I just thought it would be called G90 and not G92.
Glad to see that NVIDIA is keeping their usual schedule, even though there's no "real" competition from AMD/ATI's side.

yea its good because if they get lazy, ATI can easily catch up. nvidia are ahead but not by that much
 
I've only just bought a 8800GTX :(

Seriously though it's good Nvidia is keeping such an agressive life cycle going for these cards, it keeps the performance up and makes decent hardware affordable soon because while the new hardware costs a lot it drives down the prices of previous generations.
 
Drat. I said "No upgrades till the GeForce 9" which was my pledge back a year ago when I bought this computer ([Play] in sig). Now the GeForce 9 is on the horizon. Poo (well not really, but still, time sure does fly). I just hope it's more power-efficient than G80.

So it doesn't look like we are going to see an 8900 card if G92 is supposed to be out in the next six months, not really any time to release another 8000 series unless they already have it completed.

Don't know why people hate the Ultra so much. No its not a good value, and I wish mine had been a little cheaper ($750), but its about as fast as GTS 640 SLI, which is about the same price. And its LOT cheaper than the last two SLI solutions which are now gathering dust.

Personally, I don't mind the higher price tag. nVidia is releasing new cards every six months. I'd rather buy one kick ass card at say $750 every six months than a pair for SLI every year, as long as that $750 get's me great performance.

I don't think anyone questions that it is a "kick ass card". It's the price that's ridiculous. It shouldn't cost more than $700, which is already a pretty high price.

Don't feel like you have to defend your choice to purchase the Ultra every time someone criticizes it. We don't begrudge you your decision, we just have our own opinion of the card.

This is the best card purchase I've ever made so it's not that I'm even fell the need to defend myself as I don't understand why a $750 card gets such a bad rap, when people spend $1200 or more (I've done that as well) for SLI for well less than twice the performance in most cases.

High-end hardware is never worth it from a price/performance perspective.
 
Seriously though, if 1Tflop is true, wow

2900 XT = 475 Gigaflops
2x 2900 XT in Crossfire = 950 Gigaflops (if at 100% effeciency)

Don't be so fast. There is a credible source for the next-gen nVidia card being out near the end of the year. This is from the CUDA FAQ, posted by an nVidia employee on the public CUDA message board (http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=36286):

Does CUDA support double precision arithmetic?

CUDA supports the C "double" data type. However on GeForce 8 series GPUs, these types will get demoted to 32-bit floats. NVIDIA GPUs supporting double precision in hardware will become available in late 2007.

I take this to mean the 8 series doesn't and won't support doubles, but a new (non-8 series) card will and it's due out late this year. With the 1tflop comment from Michael Hara, I'm really excited. A teraflop is about 3x the performance of the 8800GTX.
 
HOLY %*(&@#! I hope the card is around the length of the current 8800GTS 640, though... I can barely fit the GTS 640, maybe a half an inch more if I had to. This sounds like an unchained FENRIS*!!!

There's a bug in the driver that nVidia needs to fix before the folding client will work. Right now nVidia's driver developers are pretty busy with other priorities, but nVidia has said it will eventually be fixed.

sorry not being pushy, hope it doesn't come off like that. Hoping someone with the right contacts can't relay some reassuring info.1Tflop would be a great waste otherwise, as I can't see gaming requiring all that, yet.

We have been cooperating with Mike Houston in tracking down the bug; the application is complex and required someone familiar with the application code to narrow the problem down to something that was easier to isolate. Mike has done that and I have filed a bug. Unfortunately, our driver engineers are busy with many other application issues to solve and features to implement. They will get to this issue in due course.

Cwap. I have 66 days left to step-up for my 8800GTS.. Errr... hope a 8900GTX at least comes out soon enough... What does everyone think?
 
I hope that ATI has a plan for Q4 to counter the G92. I think their architecture has a lot of promise and they'll be able to really crank up the results with some tweaks to address the current bottlenecks and inefficiencies. A die shrink and new RAM wouldn't hurt either.

Maybe we'll see the HD2950 series in Q4? Something to make Nvidia keep their prices in check?
 
I personally can't see why Nvidia would raise the prices from the 8800 GTX launch with the G92. They didn't have any competition then with the 8800 GTX either then.

I don't expect the flops number to translate into even a two fold increase of performance, as 1.9 would be enough for me.
