Yeah the card that was either the first or second fastest available card at the time (depending on the game/setting) was really a "slow POS".

I guess since my 6800GT SLI outclasses X850XT PEs at everything relevant they are "slow POS"s as well?

Dont compare two cards, to one. Techincally, your 6800GT's are the second fastest, so by your logic, they are what you are trying to call the X850.

Looking back, and especially with todays games the 5800U was pretty craptastic. Everyone knows this.

While I wouldnt call it a "pos", its a pretty poor card compared to the 9700 Pro.

How do you know its a "kick a$$" card, and how do you know it will be on store shelves by July 4th?

Yes but the R520 will be a POS and will only be avaialable by 2056

lol, well technically you dont wanna brag your a single slot cooler unless you CAN use a single slot cooler. They wont release it with a single slot cooler that doesnt work.
Well its obvious they wont release a cooler that doesnt work. It just seems from the picture/atricle at the top of this thread shows the HSF needs some work to better cool the card. As for me I could care less if the HSF took up 3 slots, I have the room in mine. THe only reason they are porbably going single is to attract the SFF crowd. Look at ATI, even they are finally going dual slot cooling, at the same time though those cards dont put off as much heat as NVIDIA ones do. Watercooling all the way :)

I'm pretty much stoked at the reference design having a VIVO port. Now its not an AIW killer
but VIVO is damn awesome for me...couple that with 2x the power of a 6800GT and nVidia
err...BFG has my money again.

perhapes you missed this paragraph:

The context of that statement is on of that particular card. Of course that card had no cooling on it. LOL

Still quibbling Fallguy?
The problem is "todays games" that showed the one major weakness of the 5800U (DX9) didn't come out till a year+ after it's release.

I know some people save their cards longer than that, but the thing is that the 9700Pro was pretty much useless as well for the DX9 games. (at least IMO, I suppose some limped along at 10X7 0X0X)

compared to competition (9700 pro) it was slow and couldnt run DX9 content nearly as fast (or at the same IQ levels). compared to R300, IMO, it was a slow POS.

So with the 5x00 series its ok that it was not future proof but with the Xx00 series they are no good since they have no SM3.0?
Rollo I believe you are being mighty hypocritical.

I sincerely hate to point this out...but the 5800Ultra was definitely faster than the 9700pro in most games of the day...PS2.0 is where the 9700 won out...

The 9700 also won out in image quality and AA performance as well, which is why a lot of people still said the 9700 was better despite the lack of DX9 games at the time.

Ya because when they tested it they took of the cooling

If you tried that with an 6800GT or XT-PE, you'de melt it

My point exactly

Not a but of burns and blistering.

MELT

huh?

nobody knows how the damned card got burnt up...stop trying to turn it into a "G70 has heat issues" debate...

meanwhile...did you notice all the crossfire previews are up?

yes I did
.

looks very nice

I doubt NV engineers are stupid enough to release G70 with a single-slot cooling solution if it meant heat issues/problems. I expect it'll be hot as hell but will still work fine - just like my 6800GT did before I watercooled it. :)

As for the power consumption guesstimate of 150W - that seems entirely based on the maximum that the card *can* be supplied by the PCIe slot and 6-pin aux power connector. Hell, there are plenty of PCIe graphics cards out there with the same 6-pin auxilliary power connector but it doesn't mean they all use the full 150W does it?

We won't know anything about heat issues and power consumption until someone tests the actual card. The Hardwarezone article is a classic example of someone who knows nothing about a product but writes a whole story based on a picture or two.

It had more than one major weakness. Its performance sucked with AA, and the AA wasnt nearly as good as the 9700 Pros. The 9700 Pro was also faster in just about every game, such as OpenGL games, usually dominated by NV.

The fact is, the 5800U is a poor card compared to the 9700 Pro.

No, I just don't see them ever having had a working card, so it's all speculation?
Unless you got a magical chrystal ball?
They never say they know this for a fact, or am I mistaken?
You could be right...you could be wrong...that qoute dosn't give proof in any direction...

Terra...

Since it's a prototype it may be attributed to some guy with a soldering iron or mishandling. Remember how some of the first 6800's sent to reviewers had jumper wires on them?

I do actually rember something like that...jumper wires...something about the voltage or something like that, just by the heatsink right?

Terra - I could be mistaken though :S *L*

No multimillion dollar company is going to release a faulty product such as the G70 from this article, I'm sure that card was faulty to begin with, or they didn't have an actual card at all.

Also the reason ATi did not go with SM3.0 on their current gen cards X800 series is because currently no games take advantage of the SM3.0 and even if it's implemented there is no visual difference. ATi was right to stay witht SM2.0b because it provides the same quality as the SM3.0 does today(not saying that it will be that way in next gen games).

Hold off on the flame wars until there is real world testing of both the R520 chip and the G70 and see which card is a better performer.

the SM 3.0 games are right around the corner though. AOEIII, Oblivion, and Unreal3 engine games are all going to look better with SM3 support.

Same here, farcry, and painkiller are the two thers I own that also take advantage of SM3.0. You CAN tell the difference between 2.0 and 3.0. Dig around on google and you can see the screenshots for yourself.

FarCry (other than HDR which wasn't SM3) I couldn't really tell a difference, however on Painkiller I *could* tell a difference between the two. I can also remember an ensenble studio developer saying that AOEIII will have some SM3.0 exclusive features. Not only that, but I Bethesda said at E3 that you will need the latest hardware (ie SM3.0) to make Oblivion look it's best.

and by that time., new cards will be out.

Even with SLI or AMR, these current cards arnt fast enough to take advantage of SM3.0

Exactly, SM3.0 is not fully taken advantage of right now, but when it will be the R520 chip from ATi is here and it fully supports SM3.0 and is fast enough for it.
