Hi all, im thinking about building a new _budget_ gaming pc

i can pick up a cheap q6600 on ebay

im also considering a mini-itx system containg a G530 and Biostar TH61 ITX motherboard

which is the better system? i want to be able to play BF3 at LOW settings 1680x1050 (64 player multi)

also, ive seen there is a G555 out, which is £8 more, and is 2.7ghz

Unless you already have a socket 775 mobo, the Q6600 is a poor choice.

Well for Crysis the Q6600 does about 70fps and the g620 does about 80fps (1680x1050)

According to anandtech benchmark.

The g620 has 300mhz more then the g530

So yes they should run about the same.

I would go with the g530 because you have an upgrade path. If you ever need more power you can move into a 2500k or faster.

ive found a G860 for £16 more than the G530.. would the extra money be worth it? would there be a noticeable difference in games for the extra 0.6ghz?

ok brilliant, i may have finally settled on my budget gaming build:

parts i already own:

Cooler Master Elite 120 case
Corsair Vengeance Arctic White 8GB kit
Corsair H60 w Noctua P12 fan
OCZ Agility 3 120gb SSD

parts i am purchasing:

Intel Pentium G860
Biostar TH61 ITX
Club 3D Radeon HD 7750 1GB (with FREE Farcry 3!)
Powercool 450w High Efficient Modular PSU

TOTAL (not including Corsair H60 & Noctua):

£355

not bad for a little small form factor gaming rig :)
(not to mention at least £10 could have been saved with cheaper memory!)

I would look around for a better PSU: I can't find any info whatsoever of who actually makes it, what temps it was rated at, whether or not it can actually provide 450W without killing PC hardware, what its actual amperage layout is, etc. Not to mention that its price is extremely way too low compared to confirmed decent quality non-modular but low priced PSUs like the Corsair CX430 or CX 500. The fact that it's 80Plus rated means absolutely nothing considering how ridiculously easy it is to cheat the 80Plus testing.

All of that adds up to "Don't buy"

thx for your input.. its a shame.. the modular feature is so cool, especially considering the size of my case!

the CX430 isnt much more expensive which is a bonus

i really want a SILENT cheap psu. my current one is an OCZ CoreXstream 500w supply. there is a buzzy (ringing) noise coming from my current pc and im sure its the power supply! it is highly irritating.

Yes, considering your case, you really should spring the extra cash for a modular PSU. The cheapest decent modular PSU that I can recommend is the Seasonic M12II-520 520W modular PSU. IMO, the modular cables are well worth the extra cash.

Yeah you're not getting that for cheap. Cheap, quiet, good. Pick two.

For the money, no they are not.

+1 for going with the G series CPU over the Q series.
