FX4100 OC Trouble

Hi, my borther just bought an FX4100, it runs at idle 38C and at full load it runs 58C is that normal?

He has tried using ASRock OC tuner to overclock but if he does even just a little the computer becomes unstable.

He is using Windows 7 x64 and an ASRock N68C-GS FX motherboard, with a 500W PSU.

Is it even possible to OC with the stock cooler?

Could the instability be caused because I replaced the mobo, cpu, and ram without reinstalling windows?

Could it be because the cpu pins were slightly bent and I had to unbend them?

just recalibrate, the voltage may be far to high so more heat, always a good idea to get an aftermarket heatsink when you will be overclocking such as hyper 212+.

I would just lower voltage till it destabilizes and test test test, something like Heaven DX11 is a good benchmark and LinX though it is not realistic is also a good cpu tester.

I would lower voltage AND redo the thermal pasted for the cpu cooler, just a very very thin line of thermal paste in the dead center of heatspreader(top of cpu the little "cap") you put a thin line dead center minus about 1/3 of the edge top and bottom, you put heatsink on and bolt it down, I found this way worked the best for me, problem with thermal paste, to much or to little hurts cooling.

speaking of cooling, does the case have good cooling to begin with? I know that motherboard itself is gonna get very hot but as long as your case has good airflow it should be ok.

Never use auto oc, you are best to learn how to do it manually so you understand what everything does, this way here you can control voltages and minimize heat while not "hurting" anything.

anyways, redo the thermal paste for cpu (something like Artic silver 5 or my favorite Artic MX3 or MX4) thin line or a grain of rice size dead center of heatspreader, check for contact clean it again once you see if it spread well enough, to clean use rubbing alcohol 75-99% and Qtips works wonders.

Remember not all chips overclock the same, to me it sounds like it is getting way to much voltage hence way to much heat, however, FX chips are also known to get very hot with increased speeds/voltage, maybe it just a "bad" chip so it pushing out more heat which is ok from the overclocking side kind of, should mean it has a higher ceiling of speed it can do, just need to keep it well cooled.

if you unbent cpu pins and it works then no, that wouldn`t be the issue, or it wouldn`t work or it would have fried as soon as you hit power on :p

always good idea to do a fresh install when you change components as you did, mostly from a driver standpoint and to avoid performance issues/crap left that will not be used again.
 
you should be able to get at least a litte OC on the stock HSF, however that board doesn't look like it has any VRM cooling. You might be running into an issue where the board will throttle the CPU for drawing too much power. Happens on a lot of "cheaper" boards only rated for 95W.
 
yep, however I thought that boards rated for use of AM3+ had to be able to drive 125w cause AMD wanted to avoid the issue they had early on with AM3? but yeh, Nvidia based boards overall were never the greatest for many years now and Asrock as well as many Matx boards never truly were overclockers boards, but also agree should be able to get at least a bit of an overclock out of it, course if the power supply is crud it could also be trying to draw to much that once clocked up the psu cannot cope so it "appears" to be heat related.

FX chips can handle 60c or so I have heard their terminal is 70c, 58c is high so to much voltage or bad thermal paste would be my guesses.
 
I'm not talking about the chip overheating so much as the VRM's around the socket. I had a X6 1045T 95W that wouldn't OC much on a higher quality Asus mATX board (M5A78M-LX Plus) because the VRM's would heat up and the chip would throttle, and that board was rated for 125W processors. I used the same chip on a 970 board with VRM heatsinks and it OC'd another 400mhz and never had throttling issues. The specs on that board say only 95W processors, so the VRM's are likely even weaker than the ones I was using.

That being said, you still should get a little OC. The situation I was describing is under a full load situation, and I doubt the OP has a full load running if he can't get the board to boot with a minor OC.
 
hence I think cooling is the issue overall, FX chips tend to get quite hot to begin with, so if the voltage is dipping to much then vrm are being hit even hard(compensation) or just the overall cooling is not ample enough.

Hey at least it didn't fry when he first booted on like so many folks happened with their AM3 processors in AM2+ boards :p
 
Could someone explain to me what might cause this problem. I redid the heatsink with some quality thermal paste, and also used the correct amount. He OC'd a little bit to 3.8GHZ but when he plays a game he gets a massive FPS drop.
 
fps drop can be many reasons, the FX chip can overclock lots on the memory controller and the HT speeds this can have a profound effect in some areas.

3.8 is next to no overclock for that chip btw, you want 4.0Ghz+ the turbo is 3.8 however, there is rare occasions that FX chip actually can downclock if they get to hot etc.

how are the temps under full load? and what video card is being used?
