My specs are as follows:

IC7 board
2x256 Kingston Hyper X DDR 400
2.4C@3.38 ghz with XP-120 & 120mm fan
GF4 4400

I intend to upgrade to 1 gig of ram and to a 6800 GT. Basically im wondering how long this system will last me. I havent been keeping up to date on intel's future plans but it seems to me that all the stuff that intel is trying to market atm (DDR2, pci express, prescott, etc) still require a significant amount of time to mature. Definately atm the price/performance ratio of upgrading to a prescott system with DDR2 and pci-e just does not seem worth it from what I have already.

Maybe when intel releases their dual core 64 bit chips it will be worth upgrading (although I hear these suckers run very hot, may have to look into what AMD has to offer). In any event I want my current system to last at least another 3 years. Maybe I will upgrade to a socket 478 prescott and then overclock the sucker as much as I can.

The heat from the Dual-Core Prescotts will be bad, but not that bad. 130w for 2 CPU cores isn't too shabby, considering that the current Prescotts are about 114w (I think?) and the Dual-Cores will have more die space for heat dissipation.

478 Prescotts generate more heat than the latest LGA775 Prescotts, AFAIK. And I've heard that 478 Prescotts can kill a mobo after a while, as the 478 mobos can't handle the power and heat requirements of the Prescott. Not too sure if this is just a rumour though.

Thats news to me....surely intel wouldnt sell chips that can destroy your m/board

When I built mine with a 3.0C, I pretty much know that upgradeing to something really good 2-3 years from now might not be possible. DDR2 and PCIe, I just don't see what I got now going higher to be in the same class as the new of then. But I might be able to settle for the best of now, later. It'll probably get quite a bit cheaper, giving me a little more time with what I got. We'll see when we get there.

That will at least hold you through till the end of this year.

If you only a faster processor to begin with... :p

It depends on what you do, but I'd say at least a year, and maybe two. That will be a good system, but also that will be the last upgrade you should do to it before a mobo/CPU/memory upgrade.

Well AMD doesn't use DDR2 yet so you can use your ram sticks from you old mobo but have to get new chip and video card but same with Intel new ram card and cpu. My self i have

2.8c oced to 3.65 with ThermalRight sp-947u Cause core is exposed (don't do)
Corsair XMS1024-4000pro
Abit IC7-G
Sapphire 9000pro 64meg turbo editon (I know sucks sold my 98Pro to get X800XT but got fired from my job)
Audigy2 ZS
Vantec 420 Stealth (Sucks Rails Dip Like A Girl That Sleeps Around (lose you say)
Want to get a PC Power & Cooler 510Express so bad.

I for one am getting a new board chip and ream soon just saving up some more till i can get 2gigs of ram and the new intel 64bit chips sucks that you need 2X the ram in 64bit windows. Most likey get the 3.6 chip and push my luck with alittle oc and hope to get 4 of air.
