fun graphics card dilemma

okay.. so im looking to upgrade within the next 6 months (probably gradually part by part)

Currently, I have an x800 xt.. im planning on waiting for crossfire to come out and grab an x800 crossfire card for the computer... however looking at the benchmarks a 7800gtx alone comes close to the crossfires performance in quite a few games (thats against the x850xt mind you, my card would perform even less)

so... is it worth selling the x800 xt and grabbing a 7800gtx and going for a 7800gtx sli combination? or should I just go with the crossfire?

Obviously crossfire isn't out yet so some things need to be ironed out and it could yield higher frame rates when it is released... but from what im seeing im wanting the 7800gtx over the x800xt/crossfire
 
Well Here is what I would do if I had lots of cash to throw around.
I would get another X800 card and have one Crossfire Setup and also Grab a 7800GTX!
But since that isnt happening Anytime soon, I would rather you get a 7800GTX and get new IO Improvements in AA and SM3.0 and HDR and such (YES I know HDR isnt SM3.0!). The 7800GTX is just much better in every way. Plus when it gets old you can grab another 7800 for SLI!

yeh, also grabbing a 7800gtx in addition to the crossfire isn't going to happen... these upgrades are taking course over the next 6 months so dont have the money to throw around =\

I think I'll go with a single 7800gtx and upgrade to the sli by the end of this coming up semester... (hoping for more feedback if people think this is wise or not)

im hoping to get maybe $200+ out of the x800xt (hopefully more) so that can fund the 7800gtx just slightly.. I can just go ahead and throw the 7800gtx in my current pcie mobo until I grab the sli motherboard
 
The thing about SLI upgrades is that the 8800 will be out by the time you are looking for your 2nd GTX, and the 8800 will likely provide the same performance SLI'd 7800GTX would provide. So SLI isn’t really a viable upgrade option, unless you are planning to add the 2nd card 2-4 months after you buy the first one.

it would be in that 2-4 month range, probably more in the 1-3 month range... technology moves too fast though =\

when is the 8800 expected out? I may hold off and just grab one of those in an sli and then go for a second 8800 even further down the road...
 
or you could just wait until a 8gen card comes out, and then say you are waiting for a better price/performance card, so waiting until the 9gen card comes out, and then say you are waiting for a better price/performance card, so waiting until the 10gen..... etc etc etc. Saying that you are waiting for the 8gen card to come out because it's going to be better is stupid, because once it gets here the even better cards will be coming out and you will want to hold out.

it's like every card they release is good, but then like 6 months later they release an even better card that has better performance. I always follow the same pattern, I wait until a good card reaches mid-range (for exmaple the 6800) and then I say I want something better at a decent price, so I wait until the next best card reaches mid-range, and decide I want something better. I always end up waiting like 3 years to buy something at a dirt cheap price with good performance. I'm not much of a spender :)
 
To be fair, if you check the anandtech review, Crossfire x850, consistently posted better performance numbers than 6800Ultra in SLI. We have yet to see how ATI's newer cards will perform because frankly, they don't yet exist. When they do finally release them, then the comparison between ATi AND nV's top cards will have alot more meaning. After all, what does it mean to me that your current generation card performs better than the competions last generation card, Isn't that to be expected?

If you're ready to do this now, and you want the highest of the high end, then its a no brainer go with th nV 7800GTX SLI setup. Frankly, this constant search for high-end nirvana doesn't make much sense to me, the one thing you can be sure of is that there is no "high-end" because the "end" is alway moving "higher". "Hi-performance" makes more sense to me, gives me more options, since many cards can be placed in that category.

yeh... well my main thought is this... I currently have an x800 xt (that will be going in the new system) thats it... so I can spend the money on the x800 crossfire and the crossfire motherboard.. or sell the x800 xt and buy a 7800gtx and an sli motherboard (both... close to similar prices if i sell the x800 xt) the 7800gtx will handle closely to what the x800crossfire/xt would do and I can throw in another 7800gtx a month later or so...

selling my x800 xt and hoping to get around $200 I could throw up another $300 and get a 7800gtx (roughly, if i grab a deal) and buy an sli motherboard... thats about equally priced to buying a $300 x800 crossfire and a crossfire motherboard...

so wouldn't it make sense to go with the 7800gtx and grab another 7800gtx a month later? (thats where I would spend an extra $500 over the ati configuration, but im sure the performance would justify that extra $500)

Kind of off topic:

Crossfire systems will have three open DVI ports, yes? (Four minus one used for the dongle-thing). Will it support hooking three monitors up to the video cards, and using them all in gameplay?

If that's the case, having a Crossfire setup would be pretty neat, compared to a 7800GTX . . . I've always wanted peripheral vision in games :).

yeh that would be cool.. except for the fact that maybe 2 games at most in the next 5 years will support that idea :)

I think I remember reading that crossfire had 6 video outputs all together... (also an integrated video card) but im not sure if 2 of those are being used by the dongle thing as well so..

I may hold off on the 7800gtx for a month or two and upgrade memory or save up some... who knows..

In the end, the only person it needs to make sense to is you. I take a different approach based on my preference to extract hi performace from mid-range parts. But I also lack unlimited resources. :)

Only the Platinum Edition cards that have 2 dvi outs to begin, with will end up with 3 dvi-outs. One is on the Master, the dongle only replaces the one that its using on the slave.

Yes, but are all the DVI ports that are physically open still "open" for monitor use?
 
i'll give u 250 for ur x800xt if I ahd the money :p I am sure seling it for 200 is way too low hehe....

i'll probably throw it up on the fs/ft subforum when I do go to sell it..

Im not sure If i want to order the 7800gtx next week or if I want to order a new case and motherboard next week....

so in reality, I may end up keeping the x800 xt for another month or so..

start saving up :p
