Hi everyone,

I'm looking to buy a new 22" display. Since I do like quality I chose to go for a Dell monitor.
However I am limited on the budget so I must choose to go for the Dell Ultrasharp 2209WA 22" E-IPS or the Dell 21.5-inch P2210H TN.

IPS vs TN ? 1680 X 1050 vs 1920 X 1080 ?
Don't really know what to do here ...

The ideal would be to go for a 1920x1080 TN panel but those are quite expensive.

I tend to use a lot of Photoshop, some coding and not that much gaming. So what do you think?

It's also a £148.0 vs £205.00 fight eheh

Thanks

As a photoshop user an IPS would be infinitely better, though I'm a fan of them for any application.

1920x1080 is tiny on a 21.5" monitor.

I'm still waiting for monitor manufacturers to get smart and start pushing 1680x1050 on 24" monitors.

I find 1080p usable on a 15.6" monitor. 21.5 is more than big enough IMO. Also, you can pick up a 26" 1080p IIRC.

OP: Get the e-IPS screen for PS.

Personally, I would go for the IPS screen first, resolution second.

IPS typically will have much better viewing angles and color.

I've tried TN screens and they bug the crap out of me. I find that the top of the screen never has the same contrast or color as the bottom of the screen. So I spend a lot of time pushing and pulling on the screen to get the perfect angle. Then I look at another part of the screen...

It even bugs me on my 12.1 inch laptop with it's 1280x800 resolution.

Meh. I'm waiting for 2,560 x 1,600 on a 24-inch panel. We're talking PC monitors which you use at close range, not TVs. Lower resolutions just give you less space to work with. The only reason to want lower resolution is if you have crappy eyesight. But in that scenario, you can just run a high res panel at a lower non-native res - it'll look crappy, but then you won't be able to tell due to your poor eyesight.

I'm assuming that in a decade at most you'll start to want lower dot pitch :) I'm a bit younger than you and I already crave for bigger pixels - it's not like I can't see properly, but high dot pitch makes me tired.

16:10 (1920x1200*):

-sometimes preferred for:
>coding

-often referred for:
>word processing

-better for:
>photoshop

16:9 (1920x1080):

-usually preferred for
>PC gaming

-better for
>console gaming
>movies
>youtube
>HDTV

TN:
-better for
>gaming

IPS:
-rarely acceptable for
>gaming (depends on display lag, pixel response time)

-better for
>photoshop
>movies (if panel has low pixel response time)

*1680x1050 is worse than both 1920x1200 and 1920x1080 in any scenario

If you can save a bit more, you might want to check out the NEC EA231WMi.

It's a 1920x1080 e-IPS sRGB display. ToatsyX posted a nice review.
He makes some comparisons to the 2209WA. He was also able to get the monitor to do 83Hz without skipping frames via displayport.

Perhaps, but if Al Gore can handle the dot pitch of his 30 inchers, here's hoping I have more like 30 years in hand...

I actually found a sweet deal on a 2007wfp and went with that since it's algo IPS and same resolution as well.
However I miss some black levels on this monitor ? Just me ?
I love the colors but the black levels are not really convincing me.

Here's a quick and dirty example, on this small test on the other display I have I see every little level increase, however on the 2007wfp I can only start seeing it after the 9/10 level ? Is this normal ?
