Hey Hardforum,

Long time lurker, but its time for me to re-build my network and servers due to new routers + north bridge fail on my current server. I really appreciate any assistance with re-architecture the infrastructure

Main goals/uses
Experimentation and Learning
Alot of VMs (If possible for the host system to run VM's + store VHD) Im comfortable with All OS' and like to play with and learn new ones
Data Backup for PC's, iDevices, Android Devices, (Full house backup)
Media Streaming (All Formats, Music Movie TV) to Phones, Tablets, TV's, AppleTV's, ChromeCast, Raspberry Pi etc.
Different storage arrays for each solution (I think?)
If possible to store VM Data here, and boot off local PC's and use there hard ware (Not sure if possible)
Run all my tasks without a hiccup...backups, web host, FTP, game server, file server etc

Currently the setup is as follows...
Intel Q6600
Asus P5B Deluxe (Failed North Bridge)
8GB DDR2 667MHZ
Dell Perc5/i w/ BBU - Running Raid 5 w/ 5x2TB Drives (media)

Network
Buffalo Router Running Open-WRT
Netgear D7000 Nighthawks x2 running DD-WRT
Asus Unmanaged 24port Gigabit Switch
3x D-Link DIR-655's - Stock Firmware

OS
Was windows 7 on main server

Current HDD configs
Perc5i 5x2TB in Raid 5 for media

With any board that you guys recommend, is it possible to use a LGA2011 dual socket board? with lots of onboard nic's?

All help is much appreciated.

No. You need specific Xeon LGA 2011 CPUs if you want a dual-socket motherboard.

1) What's your max budget for all of these upgrades?
2) How much storage do you want to expand to in the future?

That should get us started a bit. In the meantime, I highly recommend reading these articles:

1-maybe 13-1500 without storage
2-id like a raid card that is scalable with bigger drives my perc stops at 2tb which is brutal

Considering your planned use, you should definitely be going with the Core i7 5930K CPU with about 16GB of RAM to start. As for what OS you should be using for all of this, you should move away from the Type-2 hypervisor you're using now and use a Type-1 or bare metal hypervisor: That allows for better performance for your virtual machines. Windows Server 2012 R2 with Hyper-V or the free ESXi are usually the main bare metal hypervisors. Oh and Xen.

For the storage OS itself, still need you to read the two articles I posted. This is very critical as this determines both what OS you should use and what storage controllers you should get.

someone on another server suggested a C2100 off ebay as a cheaper solution in the ~$600 area, this full system would be cheaper than a whitebox....but prob. use more power + noise

Not to mention lacking in warranty and will end up costing more once you factor in the cost of the RAM. At least with the new build COre i7 5930K setup, DDR4 RAM is going to get cheaper over time and there might be 16GB sticks of RAM coming out as well.
