Did you reboot between swapping the HA Audio and ac97?

Did you use the Realtek driver that came with the driver disc?

Did you go into the BIOS and set it/enable it correctly? I know it sounds odd, but that's what I had to do when I built my SB-E system. Wouldn't have thought about it had I not gotten into the habit of going into the BIOS first thing on every new build. Apparently now there are some options. To be honest since I can remember I've always had really bad luck getting the front audio ports to ever work. I don't know why, but thankfully this recent build ended that decade long streak.

ya, i've messed around with any viable setting in bios, i can turn it on or off but can make them appear unused. Wonder if maybe the case ports themselves are the problem.

Considering that it's a cheap Xion case and that Xion in general don't make good cases, I wouldn't doubt that the audio ports on the case themselves are defective.

Go to the Realtek HD Audio Manager control panel and select (turn on) "Disable front panel jack detection".

An Asrock page shows how to do it for older versions of Realtek:

http://www.asrock.com/support/faq.asp?id=164

For Realtek 2.70 and later they changed it. Some instructions and pictures and stuff which I don't quite follow enough here:

http://www.sevenforums.com/sound-audio/280951-realtek-disable-jack-detection.html

If that doesn't help, try this (copied and pasted from somewhere)

Step1: open the realtek hd audio manager.
Step2: under the ANALOG, right click on the coloured jack hole and click connector retasking...
Step3: check FRONT SPEAKER OUT (as for me)
Step4: try to play a music or simply click on the arrow head beside the speaker configuration.

Edit: to confirm whether the case is using AC97 or HDAUDIO:

I currently have hd plugged in but it has the option for either. It's odd, realtek doesnt give me the option to right click on them, nor does it present that little settings folder. I don't appear to have the option for disabling detection. A change in recent drivers?
