So, first off let me describe what is occurring, I think it may be related to a GPU issue or a HDD issue.

Saturday morning, I update my Bios (it has been a year previous since i've done this)

Saturday night, I overclock my GTX 460 to 840 mhz / 1680 / 1970 ... it runs fine, it bench marks, no problems. I'm very happy about this, to compare scores, I decide to revert it. Upon hitting "default settings" on MSI afterburner. The computer freezes, not a hard freeze, but a freeze of the music first and then a blue screen. I restart the machine and the settings are reverted from the previous OC, so now they are default once again.

Sunday morning, I get up and surf the net, check bank account, the settings for the GPU are not OC'd past factory settings. It crashes on me while browsing, this time it appears to be a hard freeze, the mouse completely stops moving, almost as if it was attempting to access my hard disks

Sunday night - monday at lunch - I run the computer all night with a movie playing and all of my temp clocks up to see if its over heating or if it will crash, After I get home from lunch at work (The computer has been on for 12hrs+ straight) there was no crash and the video card did not reach above 47ish while overclocked. The max the video has reached while gaming is 75c with fans at 70%.

Monday night - the game completely freezes I am currently playing.

Additional specs - 75g Raptor drive 10k rpm, 120g maxtor drive (5400 rpm) 180g 7200 rpm, I dont have the stats on the 180g. 650w antec PSU (2 months old) Phenom II x4 940 AM2+ Cpu.

I'm unsure if a hard drive is failing or it turns out to be another issue else where. Could I have ruined something by overclocking my GPU or updating my bios (there were no issues on either other than EVGA blue screening whenever I tried to update with Precision)

what are the amp ratings on the psu and how are the +12v rails divided?is your cpu o'clocked

My CPU was overclocked 2% via the auto overclock feature on the bios, when it crashed tonight, it was set just to "auto" and not being overclocked.

The PSU is a Antec 650w ATX12v v2.2, according to the back of the box, it says it has three +12v Rails.

The output on its 12v rails are +12V1@22A, +12V2@22A, +12V3@25A

The combined max output stated on the box is 540W

i'm just guessing here but your psu might not be able to handle 3hdd a 460 a quad cpu and everything else it's trying to power.

Well, put it this way, up until Sunday, it was handling it all find, i've had this card for a little over a week and had no signs of problems. The minimum required specs for the GTX 460 are 450w or greater PSU with a min of 24 amps on the +12 volt rail. I read up that this psu can handle a single gtx 480 and if it was working fine a week ago, i dont see how it could be failing now.

it just depends on what all is shared on the +12 rail with the card.i have two 460 and each have a dedicated rail of 20 amps max on a 4 rail 700 watt psu.and i'm haveing the same issues as you when i run both cards.i'm pretty sure my psu can't handle them.i can run 1 all day long,2 and i start locking up,freezing rebooting.but i'm not saying it is your psu im just guessing.

I see.. so should I separate the adapters more for the hard drives? I believe I have the sata hdd on its own and the other two ID's on the legacy adapters. It's just strange it would all of the sudden start freezing with a bios update and a gpu overclock.

The GPU has passed all stability benches as well

you need to find the breakdown of the 12v rails it could be in the manual or online somewhere.if your wires are color coded you can do it that way.like my +12v3 rail uses a yellow with a green stripe wire anything else with that wire is on the same supply line.

Yeah, I figured the PSU wasn't the issue.. im running some GPU stress tests now, I am overclocking it, but it is standing against the stress test without any issues.

I've had crashing problems with these hard drives before something that was found to be a power issue, but im thinking I may just get rid of these IDE drives and sport a 1TB sata already.

Anyone else ever run into issues like this? The freezing with no error messages is so mind numbing I wish I had some error logs to check, sigh.

Its quite random in the occurrence. It hasn't crashed since I last posted.

I'm wondering if its possible if my GPU somehow got damaged by running it oc'd though I figured if I didnt mess with the voltage and it hasn't gone over 75c that would be close to impossible.

it's possible but i have had mine higher than that without issue and also upped the vcore a little to do it.have tried uninstalling the drivers completely and then reinstalling fresh.

I was running OCCT stress / burn in tests... It turns out that I got about 3000 errors on my GPU while it was overclocked. I've reset to factory settings and going to see if I have any problems from this point forward.

I seen this before...if you are running the IDE drives on a power connector shared by your video card or a DVD player on a connector shared with the video card you will have frequent lockups. Have you tried your tests with the BIOS running on fail safe settings versus maximum optimized settings?

That's a good question Gruntled, The IDE drives are not on a shared power connector, though obviously they are on the same PSU. I do not have a DVDrom installed on my system/plugged in. For the most part, the bios is at default settings. I'm not overclocking any compontent so hopefully there won't be another freeze.

On another note, I crashed the morning of the freeze after recovering from the MSI after burner crash, so the settings on my GPU may still have been overclocked but not reported as such. Every incident afterwards were when the gpu was overclocked. Either way, I will also re-install my latest drivers from Nvidia again, though the first install was from a fresh install without any issues. I did install RivaTuner momentarily a few days ago, but I've uninstalled it completely and removed any settings that went with it, it has crashed since.

The error are occurring to my understanding because im not upping my voltage on my gpu (because the option is grayed out) It still begs the question, why is my MSI after burner freezing with the latest nvidia drivers on a GTX 460... I can up the core clock 20 mhz, apply the changes and when i go to "reset back to factory" it blue screens, stating the Nvlddkmk.sys has failed / encountered a problem.

Just some food for thought. I'm testing the computer for freezing now while I'm at work, so we will see.

Maybe try a different app for your overclocking. Like the NVIDIA's own utility or NTUNE. perhaps it is not an issue where you think but rather might be a refresh rate lockup or something to that effect.

yeah, once I fix the freezing i'll go back to attempting to OC, but for the moment - im just going to leave it as not overclocked at superclocked default factory settings.

That is odd that is crashes no matter what overclock if you revert. It sounds driver related. Mine does not do that. My overclock is still running at 840/1970 with 30+ hours of gaming without a single crash or lockup.

If you have another hard drive, you should install a fresh copy of windows to test the video card.

Yeah, I'm not sure whats going wrong with it. This happened the first day of me using the EVGA precision.. I'll research a little more on the blue screen error when reverting. Could it be that my voltage isn't being up'd? and have you run OCCT Crucible? other stress/benches werent' providing errors but OCCT did.

OCCT gets it nice and toasty at least. 83 with 100% fan speed after 7 minutes. I have a sound card hugging my video card fan intake, so that can't be helped.

I get errors if I go higher than 815. At 820, I get one error per 20 seconds. At 825 I get one per 5 seconds or so. At 840 I get TONS.

815/1970 seems to run error free after 7 minutes.

840 never caused a problem for 30+ hours of gaming using 90% or more GPU.

Thanks for the tests Crucible, much appreciated.

I can't foresee why I would be freezing unless something else in my system got corrupted with the installatons. I'll keep my system at factory settings to see if it still freezes, if it does, I will know for a fact the problem will be else where.

At 840 on the OCCT, I got TONS of errors as well. It was up to 3500 within 30 seconds.

Without changing voltage, I think 815 might be the limit of the card. The heat got up to 80c with fan speed scaling slowly after about 5 minutes of testing for OCCT at factory settings. This really shows how hard OCCT pushes the GPU too, I'm impressed.

well found out my psu only has 15 amps per 12v rail not the 20 i thought.i can't believe it's running 1 card without issue.well it's been a good one for 4 years but only cause it was never really pushed till now.going to down clock the cpu and see how stable i can get it with 2 cards in.

have tried to uninstall and reinstall your gpu drivers.sometimes they can get screwed when a crash happens and even more possible if o'clocking.

Kainzo, I remember In my threat "Post your best GTX 460 overclocks & benchmarks," when you first overclocked your card using EVGA's software you stated the system would freeze and crash with a bsod. You uninstalled that evga tool and then installed msi afterburner.

Anyway to try and shine some light on what is happening check your systems event viewer.

Control panel <-- Administrative Tools <---- Event Viewer

Click on windows log and check under system and application. Scroll down and look for any red errors and read what is happening. Everything is time stamped so from when you first crashed until your last freeze you should be able to find what caused the issue. My first suggestion is to remove afterburner do a complete removal of the nvidia forceware and a clean re-install of the forceware.

BTW I'm keeping my fingers crossed so that when you check under system you dont see a bunch of harddisk0 errors or vga errors :D

I work for a Systems Support group for a major tax software dev company, so I'm pretty accustomed to bug fixes..

I actually did look at the event viewer and I didn't see many errors at all, I'll check again tonight so I can actually post my findings of what they are.

A thing to note, upon researching this freezing, the EVGA / MSI afterburner has some issues with GTX 460 that i've found others were having the same issue... The freezing/bsod when reseting / changing clock speeds on either program happens randomly. It seems a lot of others were having it, someone posting saying that it was because the relay time on monitoring the temps/clocks were interfering with something else already reading it in the drivers, thus causing the crash.

I'll post more later tonight and see if I crash with a good stress test from OCCT.
