Oyy..I've always wanted a cat. Too bad I live in California or I'd take it for sure.

To the current [H] cat owners..what do people mean by "show your cat affection and it will gladly repay you"? Do cats really scratch up everything you own? How hard are they to housebreak(does this only apply to dogs?) and take care of?

Bump for you, sir. :) (And for the kitty, of course)

I find most of these questions depend on the cat. If you want to make sure they don't scratch up everything you own, go for a kitten instead of a cat. If you train them young not to scratch the furniture, in my experience, it usually works. Older cats seem to be "set in their ways", so to speak.

Not hard to housebreak, nothing like a dog anyway. Usually it's just as easy as giving them a litter box, showing it to them, and forgetting about it. Of course, every now and then you'll get some crazy cat that doesn't seem to want to follow the rules of feline-nature. ;)

Cats are pretty independent. Make sure they have food, water, a half-way clean litter box (trust me on this one, they'll "protest" if it gets too dirty for them to want to use), and a nice place to sleep and they'll be happy. If you're lazy, just get one of the waterers that you screw a 2-liter bottle on to and it automatically fills up the water dish, and something along the same lines food wise.

It's not much work, but for what little work it is, they're worth it. :)

Ours circulates and filters the water. Now if only they would stop trying to remove the filter and play with it....
