Free DVD player program???

I just put together a system for my sister, and need a DVD playing program. Is there a decent free one? The video card is a Gigabyte 9700PRO and the DVD player is a Lite-on. Unfortunately, I can't find any of the original install disks that came with these. Thanks!

or you can use media player in windows... you don't need a dedicated program really, media player is just fine.
 
Dont you need to buy some kind of codex from Microsoft to play DVD in Windows Media Player, if you built the computer? I believe I read this somewhere that only pre-built computers like HP and Dell has this codex already. I may be wrong and please correct me if I am.
 
A regular DVD? I don't think so. If you want to play DIVX or XVID or something exotic like that you need codecs. But straight DVD's? I don't think so. To be 100 percent sure, lets try a DVD... *grabs the closest movie to him* The Cell. *puts it in* *scrolls to dvd drive in pull down* yep works.
 
For Windows Media Player, you do need a codec. Hence, MS site has links to buy the codec.

Media Player Classic is free, and does play DVDs.
 
After I posted last night, I thought, "Duh, Media Player should be able to play a dvd. So I put in Dodgeball, and sure enough it gave me an error saying I did not have the correct codec to play a DVD." And this was the latest, version 10 Media Player for XP.

When you say "media player classic", how is that different from Media Player 10?

It seems to be a bit of rip off that I have to pay MS to play a DVD when a Media Player should be able to play MEDIA!!

MP classic is player that look like the OLD MP works alot better and isnt a much of a resoruce hog but think you need a mpeg2 codec for that too iirc

thats odd, I've never downloaded a codec for media player, how come it works for me then? I'm the only one who uses it and I build it from scratch two months ago...

edit. yeah in the help it talks about a codec, sorry I've led you wrong. I'm not sure why it works for me. maybe its indirectly playing through something else... wierd
 
Somewhere along the line, you probably got a DVD codec installed :). Windows doesn't come with one, but Power DVD and all those freebie OEM throw-in programs usually always come with a DVD player/codec to play your DVD's. Chances are between your video card, mobo, and DVD-RW drive you probably have at least 2 DVD player programs :).
 
yea even the free NVDVD ap has a mpeg2 codec in it that will work with WMP 9 and 10 and any thing else that can get at the codec pool in windows :cool:
 
The problem with "free" DVD players is that you can't legally ship one without paying royalties on the DeCSS decoding - the MPEG stuff is cake but the data is 'encrypted' on the disk. This is exactly why the XBox can't play DVDs without the remote - part of that money goes to paying the licensing fees.

hmm PS2 seems to play DVDs out of the box just fine

The stuff is already built into the PS2 (or at least it was starting with the 2nd revision of the PS2 or something). I think you probably pay the royalties when you buy the system. XBox I *think* has the capability to play back DVD built into it, but it needs the receiver in the remote kit to unlock the feature.

Anyway, VideoLAN will also play back DVDs without you having to install a separate codec.

Theres actually a tab you can break off in the Xbox to play dvds without the remote, not sure exactly where, but my buddy did it to one of his xbox' awhile back.
 
*Counts* I have around 13 PowerDVD CDs. These things are almost as annoying has AOL CDs!!!!
 
Didn't your DVD drive come with a DVD player? :confused:

Anyway, there's Media Player Classic. Highly recommended ;)
