First, I did try searching.

I have a new system:

Gigabyte DS3
e6400
Sycthe Ninja cooler with fan to cpu-fan pin and AS5
GSkill 2x 1GB
Lite-On DVD Burner
WD Raptor 74gb
Powercolor X1600pro dual dvi
Antec P180 case

PSU is Enermax Noistaker PSU eg495p-ve
http://www.xoxide.com/485w-enermax-eg495p-ve-sfma-ps.html

Well, when I first pushed the power button it came on for a second, then it shutdown, then 3-5 seconds later it automatically came back on. All the fans running, sometimes the cpu fan delayed. Hard to tell if the Raptor turns on but I think I heard it.

So it just sits there with fans running but the monitor, on either dvi output, just doesn't show anything. I don't hear any beeps from the mobo, not sure if even has a speaker.

So I tried reseating the video card, removing one of the ram sticks, no ram at all, no front panel connections to the F Audio or Front USB, no HDD, reseating 24 pin power connector, 4 pin 12v pin is connected but hard to get to due to the Ninja.

Also, after the first power up with than short shutdown it doesn't do it after I hold the power button to shutdown and then start up again, it stays on. It will only do the 1 second on thing and jump back on after I had turned off the PSU and removed the outlet plug cable.

I also looked at the other side of the case to see if there are any of those mobo screw holders unused under the mobo, but everyone that was under the mobo was being used, so no shorting there,

Also, question on the e6400 cpu. This was the first cpu I used with no pins, but the pins were in the cpu socket on the mobo. I put the cpu in with the triangle on the coner where the lever was, and it was the only way to fit into the two grooves. Though, I wasn't to sure about the feeling when lowering the lever, or some of the sound, but it was the only was to do it.

And if I were to remove the heatsink and reseat the cpu, do I need to remove the AS4 reapply a new batch or just put it back on? I don't have anything on hand to properly clean it.

I just tried turning it on again and now it seems to be going on and off repeatedly, what's causing this?

A few things to try.

I dont know much about those video cards, do they have a power connector on them? If so, did you connect it? Is the connection tight?

Secondly, do you have the stock HSF? If the power connector is hard to get to due to the HSF, perhaps its pushing on it causing a loose connection.

What your system is exibiting, in My experence, is just like when you dont plug the power connector into the motherboard for the CPU. It does pretty much exactly what you are stating, do you have a multimeter? Can you see if you are getting voltage at the CPU plug?

Also, try unplugging everything from power that is not needed to post, so pretty much all your drives. If it posts with out the drives plugged in, you most definitly have a power problem.

As for the CPU, thats just how it feels when you close the zif. Its kind of strange, but thats how it is.
You can use rubbing alcohol to clean the old AS off.

The video card doesn't have a separate power connector.

The heatsink I'm using is the Scythe Ninja, which is like 6 inches tall and with the motherboard being on the top of the case with the PSU at the bottom there is only an inch opening between the heatsink and case/fan down to the 4 pin connector, but the heatsink does clear the connections as you can see from this early photo:

Only thing I have for voltage testing is a little wall outlet tester with two pins and a light to let you know there is power.

What's the minimal stuff connected needed to post or atleast see something on the monitor? I tried with out the HDD. And this PSU was power my previous computer with 4 HDDs, 6800 with power cable, tv tuner card, audigy, IDE card, two rom drives, and overclocked 2500+. The PSU isn't very old and I haven't had to use the 12v cable until now.

My guess is that it is the RAM. What is the voltage of the GSkill ram you are trying?

If it is not 1.8V ram, you need to pull it, and put in a stick of 1.8V ram, boot to bios, and up the voltage to the rating of your ram, then shutdown and put your ram in.

This is been a very common problem with the P965 chipset boards.

Good Luck!

yeah. is your 12v plugged in all the way to the mobo? i had a similar problem with my last build and the 12v plug hadn't clicked. my fans worked, but i got no post.

good luck.

Might be PSU..What brand is it? Could also be ram...

All u need is ram, VCard, board...

Make sure jumpers are well set. Cmos, etc,etc

If the system turns on then add keyboard and mouse... if it turns on add HD, etc, etc.

I just noticed u have G.Skil. Are they the ZX???
There have been problems with those and ur board.

Yea, didin't notice previous link.

Well, that ram doesn't want to match up to the slots on this mobo so it's out of the question. So it's impossible to get a bios to post with no ram?

So does it have to be 240pin ram and that extra Geil ram was 184pin, was that why it didn't match up?

Really sounds like it could be that ram after going through that thread at extreme systems. And it's making me relieved knowing it's just that and possibly not something worse.

I suppose now I could go out and try to find some cheap DDR2 256mb ram to see if it posts finally. But it would be a pain when overclocking if I have to reset the cmos and reuse that extra stick to preset the voltage and put the gskill ram back in.

But man, this is so annoying. Taking a vacation day off to put a system togethor very carefully with good wire management to then not post, tearing the system apart, making it messy and undoing everything I did that day to find out it was because of bad programmed ram.

Actually I think the problem is more with the board bios. I was all set to buy one soon but the problems with RAM have me thinking twice. I'm hoping they do a refresh on this board when they release the onboard gpu version.

Yea, it's annoying...

I would try a name brand mem module... if u can. Sux having to go throught this entire process = annoying.

Funny thing is Asus is going through the same thing and even funnier is that Asus might b\uy junkabyte (sorry - had to throw that in. I just dont like gigabyte = too many bad experiences)

Well, just ran around town. PCClub, Compusa, and one local computer place. No stores stocked at 256 DDR2 chip, the cheapest was a 512mb wierd brand at Compusa for $60 with $25 rebate, all the other stores wanted $60 no rebate. And the cheapest for DDR 800 2gb pack was $280-$299. How do local stores stay in business, off the ignorance of others?

So all in all, I think I just buy a new set of ram, not worth $60 to fix this memory even if I could do it today, especially if I had to clear the cmos I'd have to swap the ram every time.

So what would be the best brand to order in the $200-$230 range, Corsair, OCZ?

I noticed Corasair has really been aggressive with their pricing lately... I'm impressed.

G.Skill, OCZ, Patriot, Crucial, Corsair, Kingston, Mushkin... can't remember anythig else right now... are usually top names.

Thanks, looks good, I must have missed that one while looking at the C4 version for $254. And from what I read the timing hasn't been that important with Conroes. So I could overnight that one you linked to for a total of $254 after tax and shipping.

I guess it was just bad luck with G.Skill and this Mobo I guess. But they seem like a good company with techs on the extremesystems forum doing tests and now confirming this ram I have won't work with the DS3 mobo and they are exchanging them for different ones that will work. But I'd rather overnight some new ram and rma the G.Skill

Check around other vendors if you want to overnight, neweggs shipping charges are nuts these days.

Son of a, that Corsair went out of stock again

EDIT, found it at ZipZoomFly for $10 less after tax and overnight.
