Am I the only one who hates Vsync and uses a frame limiter? I cannot think of any reason why you would use vsync when it introduces horrible input lag.
 
I like a frame limiter more.

I have MSI afterburner set at 125fps.
 
I usually use a frame limiter as I've found it to be a smoother experience (ie: BF3). Although, I haven't had a chance to use Adaptive Vsync yet.
 
I have a 120hz monitor, I cap at 125 if possible

cannot stand input lag from vsync
 
He might be using adapative v-sync? and since it never reaches refresh rate fps it's just never turning v-sync on?
 
vsync, the lag is rarely enough to bother me and I'd rather have it than tearing
 
Frame limiter now. Skyrim got me onto that. It runs much more smoothly with that than vsync. The occasional skipping with vsync annoyed the hell out of me in that title.

I limit framerate in MP games, but for SP, i'll use Vsync.

As others have mentioned, limiting my FPS feels more responsive than using Vsync.

Screen tearing is going to be present if vertical sync is disabled, regardless of what the frame limiter is set to. Whether it's an issue comes down to the individual user.

Personally, I'm a vsync-always-on guy. I don't think it makes sense to pump up IQ features like anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering only to have the screen being torn nearly every frame.
 
I use both just to prevent microstutter in a CFx setup, but I can't stand it with vsync off. The tearing can be horrendous in some games.
 
With framerate limiter in BF3 I get smoother graph (and better gameplay experience too) using the Render.Perfoverlay.Visible command, also in conjunction with RenderDevice.ForceRenderAheadLimit 1.
 
The only time I notice lag with VSync is when triple buffering is enabled.

I usually run VSync with triple buffering disabled on my AMD hardware unless I'm going <60fps often in which case I'll just run with VSync disabled. I use Adaptive VSync on my Nvidia hardware.
 
Needs to be an option for VSync AND frame limiter. One or the other doesn't really work so well.

I do VSync + frame limited to 58 (60 Hz display) + triple buffering via D3DOverrider. Works well for everything I've tried so far with near-zero input lag.

screen tearing happens at ANY framerate. it just amazes how some people still think you have to exceed refresh rate to see tearing. I hate this topic because its as if some of you people are just freaking blind. I mean the tearing is right there in front of you so why does this myth of tearing only occurring above refresh rate even exist?

Personal preference I suppose. Tearing is much more severe past a certain framerate, or at least much more apparent. Limiting my FPS cuts it down a good deal while maintaining that input responsiveness for MP. Minor tearing doesn't bother me too much when i'm playing a fast paced shooter. SP games are a difference story though and I usually thow up the Vsync for that.

well its not in my experience though. it really depends on the game but there is no certain point you go past where tearing is worse in general. in fact the games where I get the highest framerate are the ones with the least noticeable tearing. a game like Metro 2033 tears really bad even at 20-30 fps though. sometimes you can set the limiter at framerate that causes tearing in one spot the whole time while other times it might just tear randomly. again it really just comes down to the individual game as some games do not even have very noticeable tearing.
 
Since I got my 120Hz monitor and got hardware that could mostly keep up with that, I've found that the problem is mitigated to the point that I don't really notice. Clearly tearing is still occurring (and will as long as the math doesn't line up), but the difference between the torn frames is much less and doesn't stick out anywhere near as badly.

Pretty much how I feel.

I haven't noticed tearing for a long time with 120hz+Vsync Off+ Frame limiter.

I know it's there and all, just much harder to see.
 
I look forward to the day when we can get reasonably-priced 120 Hz IPS displays. :)
