FPS tracking software

I'd like to try out a utility that follows FPS, but really don't know where to start. I'd rather not have to buy the stuff just yet, so trials and freeware are good. With those as my restrictions, has anyone got suggestions?

FRAPS is a good one, but it's not free....It needs to be registered/purchased to remove the restrictions.
With that said, the program is definitely worth buying.

cl_showfps 1 might do the trick as well Most games have a way to track FPS in game, you just need to find the correct console command.
