FPS problems in TF2

Hey guys, I've just been getting some spikes where my FPS drops to ~14 when playing TF2, wondering if this seems wrong or not.

Specs:
ATI Radeon 4870
Intel E2180@2.9 gigs
4gb ram
Corsair TX750
Gigabyte P35-DS3L
Windows 7 RC OS

Just seems odd to get that kind of performance with this machine, regardless of graphical settings. Does this seems out of place to anyone else?

What resolution are you playing at?
How many players are in the server? How many on screen at once?
Latest drivers?
What HDD do you have?

1680x1050
24-32 players, not sure how many on screen at once
Yes latest drivers (not sure how well that can apply to 7)
HD is a 500gb Seagate (I think, I might be mixing this one up with the WD one) 7200 rpm

did you enable multicore support? I got the same system as you except I have a Q9300, and my fps never dip below 60 even on huge 32 player servers after they released multicore support.

Quick question, are you having problems with any other game(s) specifically other source based games? A quick suggestion would be to see what AA mode you're using in the CCC panel or via ATI tray tools, if it's set to Edge Detect/Wide/Narrow try Box mode 8/16x and see if that helps significantly.

My rigs a 4GHZ Core2Duo 4GB Ram 1066 and a 4870x2 and even if I turn off Catalyst AI (which makes 4870x2's act like a single 4870) I can play the game just fine at 1920x1080 with 16x AA on 32 player servers and below with highly playable FPS.

echo FPS Config Loaded!

Put this in \Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\[username]\[game name]\[game name]\cfg\ and name the file autoexec.cfg. This will turn off most of the eyecandy, but should boost your frame rates. If it does not there is some other issue on your machine causing the problem.
