Son #3 is looking to burn his xmas cash. He would like to build an entry level gaming system. I was thinking with his budget, he would be around an i5 2500k with a Z series chipset and 8 to 16gb ram. so try to stay comparable to that spec wise. Budget is $200.

$250 or less is a ryzen 2600, b450, 16gb of ddr4 3200-3600 (depending on deal).

He could go Apu if he doesn't have a graphics card and is playing little kid games.

Used he might get a better deal by $50 on a ryzen setup. Alternately 8400/9400f and z370/z390 is ~$100 used each.

I wouldn't advocate buying ddr3 era parts.
 
^^^ this right here. You can get surprisingly recent gen gear for very little now.

All depends on total budget really.

I appreciate the advice, I've been out of the game for awhile.
 
If you want to save some cash, you can definitely get a 2500/2600k combo in under $200, and probably even 3770 in that budget although probably on the upper end of your budget.

But if you can stretch the budget just a hair, a ryzen setup seems like it might be better for longevity and just having 'newer nicer things'.
