I think there should be a link at the end of a [H] article that invites readers to discuss the article's content. Putting a link to a forum thread started by the article author would do a couple things, IMO:

1. Bring additional traffic to the forum (which is the whole point of [H]ard Forum [H]appenings anyway, right?)
2. Encourage good discussion about the article's contents.

and a new section should be added (and be locked so that NEW THREADS could not be posted by anyone but mods/admins, but REPLIES could be made)

the new section would be for posts saying "this thread is about ARTICLE, discuss:"(hey im no literary genius here...)

This has been addressed before.

In a nutshell, reviews are commented on via the regular hardware threads. Editorials frequently are linked straight to the forum. News posts are discussed, as appropriate, as a matter of course.

Sorry I didn't realize this topic has been beaten to death (tried a quick forum search, but obviously didn't type in the correct keywords). And there are several other threads on this topic as well. Maybe it deserves being added to the faq.

PS, I still think direct links from articles->forum would bring more intelligent conversation, as opposed to unintelligent, but I understand the philosophy behind Kyle's comments here.

No doubt it'll bring in more posts but I don't think the quality of posts will change much.

Not all news items have had threads started in here which discuss them as they may not be "discussion worthy".

Oh definitely, I wasn't suggesting news posts get a forum link, only articles. If we had every monkey in here posting about the latest DVD format (to take an example from today's news). But encouraging discussion about Catalyst drivers, for example, would be good, IMO.

(Sorry, that's the last I'll mention this)

what about the possibility of a subsection in the Real life stuff section for current news items. Bare with me on this, but instead of making people search aroudn the whole forum for hardware, software, and other newsworthy items, we had a special section wehre people could create threads that were specifically for the news that was posted on the main page.

thoughts?

Edit: Im not saying linking to the frontpage at all, merely suggesting a new subsection specifically for news discussions. Especially for stories that dont really seem to fit anywhere in the hardware sections such as the google ads story, or the Patent reform bill. these are just news items from today that could fit there.

I understand the apprehensiveness of the possiblity of having multiple threads on the same topic (such as ATi driver updates, or stories about motherboard manufactures) but thats already happening in some cases. The apple switching to intel has threads in several different places al discussing the same thing.

Just a thought

The google ads discussion would fall under either W&P or Off topic and the Reform bill would go into the SoapBox :)

There really is no need imho for a general news section since we already have forums catering to almost every topic of relavent discussion already.

The nature of the forum allows the front page topics to be discussed only in their respective forums, which they are quite often and it probably will not change anytime soon. The topic has been discussed on many occasions and the need for a separate forum has been shot down on each occasion.
