Forspoken

I can't think of anything Square Enix has made that has truly interested me in a long, long time. I forced myself to play through the FF7 remake (which at least didn't suck), but I don't think I've been excited by a SE game since Kingdom Hearts 2.

Square Enix is the just the publisher...the developer is Luminous Productions

Shocked myself by watching the entire gameplay trailer.
Game looks lifeless, "open world by numbers". Combat might be fun and flashy, not sure there's enough else to carry it. Still don't like the protag either.

Found this on Reddit, looks very bland.

I mean WTF is this? Looks like a game from 2000. I can't tell if this is supposed to be snowy rocks or what. But if it is snow, then why are the bushes and trees green? The building seems completely out of place from the scenery and flat like straight from an asset viewer with no lighting model and light sources added. And it has the detail of about Unreal 1 castles.

The hill in the background looks laughable, it's a heightmap with 5 lowpoly seemingly sprite trees. The sky is the windows 95 loading screen. And would you look at that waterline? Or water surface, or is that supposed to be ice? Can't tell that either. And where are the soft shadows?

The sky is the icing on the cake. This game looks ugly, odd, and boring.

Comments from the Youtube video linked above:

the visuals, animations, combat and world are all absolutely stunning!

Everything else in the game looks amazing. NPCs and dialogue look iffy

Amazing that people don't see to think this game looks like something from around 2006 or so.

I've been playing through the N64 version of Ocarina of Time recently. That is what the sky in the newest trailer reminded me of.
Those have to be troll posts, and/or bots paid for by square enix.
That was my thought. All of the top comments are saying the exact same thing with only slight variation. Sort by new and you will see some human comments.

The graphics look significantly worse than when the first development trailers came out. Everybody pointed out how choppy it was, so it's no surprise that they severely toned down the fidelity to get it to run smoothly. That just makes the generic assets stand out more, though, and is a stark contrast to the horrible light show on screen during combat. Makes you wonder what the PC version is going to be like.
To be ever so slightly fair----youtube's video quality has been getting worse and worse and worse.

IGN's videos are shit for video quality. IMO best to at least find 4K YT vids for games these days that don't look like they used a potato to do the video encoding and compression. For some reason IGN and other places seem to max at 1080p that looks like compressed 720p. :vomit: The Sony version of the Gameplay Trailer looks a bit better in image quality. Anyway not sure on the game but won't buy it at $70.. Maybe $30 on sale.. I don't need to add to my backlog tho.

There wasn't another source available at the time. It was finally uploaded to Squeenix's channel. The better video quality can't save it from basic issues like bland assets, overexposure, DX9 water lines, billboard textures, horrible LOD bias, etc. It looks slightly better in motion with less artifacting, I'll admit.

there's a noticeable improvement watching it in 1440p or 4K versus the previous IGN video...to me it's more about the gameplay looking average versus the graphics

A single texture is used for the entire building, no variation, no weathering, no nothing. Looks straight out the model editor: Quick slap a canned marble texture on it and let's put it in the game!

This game has the quality of an asset flip.

Check out how bad the NPC facial animations and lip syncing is at the 2:10 mark. Looks so last gen it hurts. Clearly spent way to much of the budget animating all the parkour traversal moves.

Not that the moves look even remotely good. Mirror's Edge had more fluent parkour 13 years ago.

Geez it looks so bland. Is it the art style? Or because the world is empty? Maybe it would've been better cel-shaded or something like that. It just looks all wrong.
Spell effects still look nice tho.

doesn't look terrible but also doesn't look amazing...but the biggest selling point is that this will be the first PC game to support DirectStorage

I just played the PS5 demo of this game and I have mixed feelings. The magic effects and movement abilities do look pretty good but the graphics overall are mediocre. The game is not using any advanced lighting or shading techniques. The controls are also disappointing. They're very loose and floaty. The demo limits you to a small open world area but it does give you enough time to get an idea on what to expect from this game and quite honestly I'd hold off paying full price.

I almost forgot to mention this... the protagonist "Frey" is constantly making cringe worthy comments while talking to her magic bracelet "cuff". It's nonstop and repetitive. That alone will alienate a portion of the audience.
