Format Problem

I made a thread in the motherboard section but i didnt think it was in the right place or had good wording..soo

On my computer i have some spyware/virus problems and after trying to fix them for the past two days, i decided a reformat was in store.

So today i tried to format hard drive, i put the windows disc in the drive changed the boot order and went through the reboot. It asked me if i want to boot in to CD/DVD drive i said yes. But it booted right into windows off of the hard drive.

I tried playing around with the boot order and it didnt work. If i press F9 while booting it goes into a different boot order menu and my keyboard doesnt even work, so i have to revboot.

Everything i have tried doesnt work and i cannot get the drive to reformat.

I think thats all the information that there is to give, if i think of anything else i will post it.

System Specs:
Gigabyte DS3 (f3 bios)
E6400
2gb Patriot 667 RAM
250Gb Seagate Baracuda 7200.10
1900xt 512mb
Lite-On DVD drive

make sure the "Onboard SATA/IDE Ctrl Mode" (this the the gigabyte controller providing IDE ATA support for your CD) is set to IDE or RAID/IDE and NOT on AHCI.

my best guess. Luck.

Holy CRAP UPGRADE YOUR BIOS, this is a known problem.

download the new bios file, extract it and put it on a floppy, boot and go into the bios, at the bottom of the page you will see a menu item for a F key to start the bios update utility.

Read your manual on using the Q-flash utility, its easy. Flash the backup bios first and if all goes well, then flash the primary bios.

i would not flash bios. check your windows disk first to make sure its not screwed up. or get a clean disk from a freind. mess up with your flash and your buying a new Mobo. try the simple stuff first.

yeah i dont really want to flash my bios, but maybe i will try what BillP said

You really need to be an idiot to screw up flashing a bios...

I've been reflashing them since I was about 10 on our old 386...It's not that hard.

Flashing the Bios is a good thing and should be done if major revisions to the bios do come out. They can fix alot of problems people have.

okay what BillyP said to try didnt work.

I thought of something but im not sure if it will work, and i dont want to do it. but could i just install windows on another computer and then put it in for a quick fix?

but i would rather not do that..

Is flashing the bios easy? because this is my first time building a computer so im not that knowledgable about it. Could somebody briefly explain what the steps would be to flasht he bios?

Flashing bios is easy:
download latest bios
download bios flash utility (if board doesnt already include one)
load both onto a floppy disk
boot to the floppy disk
follow onscreen instructions

Check your mobo manuf. website for more detailed info.

NM, Bill already told you how...

Are you saying that didnt work?

i havent tried yet, i just wanted a little clearer explanation. I am going to go and read the manual a bit before i try.

EDIT

There was an online BIOS update and i tried that, it worked but i still cant get it to boot from the CD drive. And the keyboard is still unresponsive in Boot Menu (F9 i think)..

i figured out the problem, i chagned the mouse and keyboard to ps2 and it booted right into the cd drive

i dont know if this is every computer i but i thought it was weird, my brother had the idea and i said it was stupid but tried it anyway and it worked.

okay what BillyP said to try didnt work.

rats but you really needed to update that bios , really glad you figured it out,

also if you go into bios and enable usb support for the keyboard and mouse by bios it would probally work too.

anyway you got it sorted out good job.

Wow that was really rude. hey dude im not saying flashing is hard but as on this forum you realy dont know the level of experience with these users you could easily help someone fry their mobo. Turns out it was something simple and im glad he got it worked out.

Always try the simple stuff first and start formatting and flashing if nothing else works. better safe than sorry.

It may have been rude, but that does not make it any less true.
I was about to write my opinion on a person's ability to flash a bios and its relation to whether such a person ought to be building their own systems, but I have decided that I better keep my mouth shut.

I am glad that you were able to solve your problems using a PS2 keyboard. I have found that despite USB turning turning 10 this year, there are still some problems with USB keyboards and some BIOSs.
