Well I'm ordering a new machine with Vista Home Premium. I had up to this point planned on a either 7900GT or 7950GT, but reading all these threads about how Nvidia cards aren't working well with Vista because of driver issues has me now leaning towards ATI. So what ATI card out now is equivalent to the 7900 series? I'm looking at about a $250 cap for the video card.
 
From what I've read, ATi is having even worse problems. (they just aren't in the limelight since they didn't promise Vista-ready solutions)
 
I'd recommend a X1950XT, but I've heard those are having a little trouble in Vista...

A 1950Pro will do you quite nice, and run you around $175
 
I'm guessing a x1950xtx would be what you're looking for.

Just out of curiosity, could you provide a link to what you are referring to? I ask because I have heard a lot to the contrary, and my x1900xtx works as good in Vista as it does in XP.

Either way, I can say that my x1900xtx works 100% in Vista. I haven't found a game that has problems yet.

I try to keep up on tech articles around the web. I tried to dig some up:

http://www.pcper.com/article.php?aid=354 : ATi much more mature drivers than nVidia
http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=36075 : Reasonably similar scores, ATi drivers feel more polished.
I'm positive that I've read articles where people were unable to get their SLI ATi setups working properly in Vista where they worked fine in WinXP. They just aren't complaining loudly since they weren't assured Vista Readiness when they made their purchase.

What I'm alluding to is that nVidia users that are having problems are much more vocal right now since nVidia marketed the 8xxx series as "Vista Ready."

Personally, I'm using a geforce 8800GTS in a Dimension 9100 / P4D 3.2GHz / 3GB RAM / 1920x1600 monitor) and don't really have any issues. I mostly play CS:source and BF2142: Gameplay seems fine with the 100.59 drivers (Vista ultimate). (I don't use scaling or SLI and I guess that functionality is not yet in the nvidia drivers)


When I get home I'll see if I can find the article I was thinking of.
 
I have nothing against ATI, but your comment. Nvidia Cards work perfect in vista both 32 & 64 bit versions. I think You should go try green.
 
Depending on your budget, I'd buy either an X1950pro or X1950XT.

I'm using an X1900XT with vista and it's fine.
 
I dont have any problems with any of my nvidia cards in vista. I dont see why you complain.

I have 2 6600GT's,7600GT,7950GX2, and 8800GTX that all work on vista
and both of my laptops (7400GO and 7950GTX) both work on vista.

all work great. I guess ur just a noob? j/k.
 
Seeing your budget X1950XT seems to fit the bill nicely. Those new ATI Vista drivers should be wast improvement over XP equivalent. Atleast on CCC side that is, let us know how it goes :)
 
i really don't have anything to say on this subject, but didn't ati have vista whql drivers ready for download the day after vista launched, and isn't nvidia saying they will not have any for a month or more?

not to say people aren't having issues, but isn't that the case with the drivers?

nVidia didn't have full WHQL drivers, but they did have 8800-compatible SLI and fully functional quote-on-quote "beta" drivers that were fully functional non-SLI with 6/7 series cards (ones for those with SLI are due within a couple of weeks). From what I've read, though, the ATI ones, despite being WHQL, are almost as good as the nVidia ones, which were pretty darn good when I was using them. I switched back to XP temporarily due to my PVR application not being compatible with Vista yet.
