Hello.

I'm looking at purchasing a Q9550 soon for a new gaming rig, but I don't want to pay more for it than I have to... obviously.

Is there any rhyme or reason to the Intel price cuts? Does anyone forsee one occurring before the release of Nehalem, or may there not even be one then? Please help, I'm a newbie to the pricing scheme and haven't had the marketplace experience that many of you have.

One thing to keep in mind

Have it now <---> Save $15-$25

Sometimes, it does not make sence to wait 3 months just to save a few $$.
The best thing to do, is build the system you want, look for good deal going on, and just get it.

Sometimes waiting months for a very small dollar savings don't pay off in the long run.
 
Right now the Q9550 is way cheaper than a month ago. It's a great time to buy one.

However it might be best to wait on the Q9550 and get a E0 stepping model once the price comes down even more.

I still haven't seen any decent reviews on the new E0 stepping Q9550 but I can only imagine it will be able to reach 4ghz on air. :)
 
Tankguys.com will have E0 8400s tommorow, but they dont even show an eta for the 9550 :(
 
Nehalem related price cuts will probably affect high end parts more than low end parts, since I'm sure initially all Nehalem parts will be high-clocked premium parts w/a price tag to match... The Q9550's kind of in the middle, so I dunno.
 
All right, thanks everyone. I will wait for E0's in that case (which hopefully will saturate newegg/tigerdirect/etc. within a month) and get one then.

And, 4 ghz on air would be amazing. :)
 
My buddy was looking to upgrade his proc, and I was suggesting a Q9450 (the extra 6 MB to L2 cache is nice). Would you guys have a better recommendation (quad-core and Intel)? He was also looking into a new mobo.
 
4GHz on a Q9550 would be tough, it'll need a mobo capable of doing 470FSB stable, which is pretty much right at the limits of most P45 or X48 mobos. Remember quads can't clock as high as duals in terms of FSB, in fact many Yorkfield overclocks are mobo limited unless you happen to have a Q9650 or better, which are still very expensive at this point.
 
I agree. I think aiming for 4ghz on a quad is ill advised.

The 3.2-3.6ghz range is the sweet spot, as far as I'm concerned. Currently, anything north of 3-3.2ghz shouldn't be bottlenecking your graphics card, so anything over that is just for the sake of your e-peen anyways.

I'm just a hair away from stable 3.83GHZ with C1 stepping Q9550.

Based on my results with C1 I'd think a 4GHZ on air OC for E0 would be very possible on a modern performance MB.

My voltages on CPU were at 1.25 volts. Not sure why CPU ID didn't pick it up. It's well within the safe zone.

E0 stepping will use use less power and not heat up as much and will be less hindered by resistance.
