Hey guys, I'm just wondering how safe it would be to put 2-3 drops of blue food colouring in my water line. I'd pre-mix it all first to make sure it didn't *react* or accumulate anyhere. I've got a bit of listerine and purple ice pro in the loop already. I'm not looking for a deep colour, I just don't want it to be clear (a nice light red/orange/blue etc.) would make it look more like water.

Sooo, I guess my question... does food colouring hurt the pump (MCP655) blocks (DD Maze 4 Acetal for GPU and TDX for CPU) tubing (masterkleer) or radiator?

Also, would it settle (and precipitate/gunk up) if I had my computer turned off for a couple of days/weeks in the summer?

**EDIT** I'm sorry if this has already been asked, Chalk it up to my Canadianism... but Food ColoUring doesn't turn up many good results :rolleyes:. I'd still like some input tho...
 
i put a little red food coloring in my old watercooling set up and ran well didn't have any problems,
 
Never tried it, but i've heard it isn't wise. Don't know if it will leave behind nasties or not, however I think it would probably stain everything in your loop.
 
My food coloring seemed to fade rather quickly, and I was stuck with a washed out, not-so-blue color :( I wouldn't reccomend it.
 
I stole a little vial of blue food coloring from the local supermarket, and 10-15 drops was enough to get a really deep (opaque) blue in my loop. Not UV reactive, sadly, but you get what you pay for. As far as staining things... probably. I haven't drained it yet, so I wouldn't know. In the end, it doesn't really matter; blue is so cool you'll never want to change colors anyway.

I just added 4 drops to my loop for a not too blue... *blue*. Just so it doesn't look like clear water, you know... I'll revive this thread in 6-8 months when I clean out my loop and tell you all if I screwed up my hardware :D.
 
Hey, if you're going the cheap route for dyeing your water, a couple drops from a higlighter will make things quite UV reactive:



That was just with some quick streaks, a couple drops will easily make things glow nice and bright. The yellow color isn't too powerful either, so your food coloring shouldn't get washed out either :D

Rather than go into it from a metals-engineering standpoint, just go to this link which is why I would never put into my body, much less a cooling system for a PC. Please understand, I am not trying to be a smartass, I am trying to help! If you want more reasons, please feel free to PM me. Believe me, this is not a good thing to pu into your H2O Cooling system.
 
I used blue food coloring in a loop I built 2 years ago... that machine runs about 6 hours a day, 6 days a week... never had a problem with it.

Honestly, I'm not impressed with the color results but it looked a lot better than that brownish-grey the additive turned the water.

A bottle of food coloring will set you back about $1. A bottle of Dye-Lite, a few bucks more. After you've dropped a hundred bucks or more, why cheap out at the last minute?

Adding anything to the loop is a bad idea... why do you think Innovatek voids warranties if you've added dye?
 
If you're dead set on coloring your coolant... I've not had any problems using food coloring.

That having been said, adding anything not manufacturer recommended to the loop is not suggested. Dyes have the potential to contain nasties that can mess up the loop (regardless of food color, dye lite, etc).
 
You'll be fine... probably.

That is unless you stuck a piece of moldy bread in the res.
 
What do you mean "unless?" I thought that was one of the first things you do... great, now I have to clean out my loop *AGAIN*. Ugh
