So I've browsed around in here before, and I've tried to find an explanation of what this is. I see that you all have a project based around it, and it seems to have some sort of potential community benefit.

Is there anywhere that one of your FAQs intro a n00b into the definition and application of this concept?

Thanks

Using the computing power of CPU's GPU's and consoles (well the PS3 anyway) :p

I hate that the ps3 is the one that got to fold since im a 360 fanboy, but i really doubt the 360 could handle folding. The original's like mine anyway. Even the GUI for the 360 is just sooooo slow. Dont get me wrong though, i love my heylow :p

See what happens when you become a fanboy of anything? :D

Besides, the 360 would melt into a puddle of molten goo before the first WU completed.

And back on topic, folding is the only sure fire way to gain you an untold level of fame, fortune and women. I'm serious. :D

It's true. This is the sub forum of [H] with the highest number of female posters in the last 24 hours (probably, maybe, sorta, ok, we have at least 2)

Very interesting...I'm definitely going to do some more reading up on the concept! (folding, not females...reading up on the latter is too confusing)

Not ALL of us are confusing ;) I'm not like most girls, and I'm not like any guys either.. I'm a special case, I've been told many times :)

No but really.. I play video games all day, successfully built a computer, enjoy technology, watch porn... See, we're so much alike! ;)

"not like most girls"...my mind-fking ex told me the same thing.

after 6 months of hell, i'm finally free. just in time for the summer! and porn! and technology! ha...

Why don't you load up a client while you read ;)

Team 33

While I can admit I'm not like most girls, I can also admit that I am not perfect ;) None of us are (Girls or guys). I can honestly say that none of my ex boyfriends have ever called me nuts or have referred to me as mind-fucking. I'm still friends with a few of them, and on friendly terms with the rest... Oh except for the guy who cheated on me with his ex-girlfriend

If you go through life thinking all women are insane, you WILL only find insane ones. Sure, I've met plenty of guys who were disgusting pigs, cheaters and liars, but I don't think the ENTIRE male population is like that ;)

Ha! I'm not jaded, just a little bitter for the time being. But again, no time like summertime ;)

Next question(s): Is a "boxen" (or is that plural, as in oxen?) a box or boxes that contribute(s) to the needs of folding (unless these are just the boxes created from donated parts)? And how does one initiate such a tactic?

And...what are WUs and PIDs? I see these are what can really make me un-uncool in here. :D

Feel free to just link the n00b to what could be the obvious -- though I doubt that's the case, because I've dipped in a few times and still haven't found the answers to what I've asked in this thread (hence, its creation...)!

boxen is plural of box (like oxen as you said).

WU is work unit. This is what you download, calculate, and send back.

And @ Syribo, you're wrong. I am, in fact, perfect. Do not waste you time trying to dispute this. :D

Oh I totally understand. Relationships ending (Especially on bad terms) really makes you hate the opposite sex... Hell, it makes you just hate everyone for a bit ;) And even ending a relationship on 'good' terms isn't usually 'good'.. It's just more tolerable to try and get along heh.. but hard to do, especially when one person is nuts or mean (Like you said :)).

Wait, this turned into a relationship thread? Count me in... Now please advise me on how to obtain a girl?

PIDs probably refer to processor IDs.. or what every running thread gets when it starts on your computer.. just a way for the computer to keep track of what its doing basically.

As for relationships.. I'll stay off that path. I don't really have any with anyone. I'm not a Freak for no reason.

K, progress. So is it like a MAC address, where each processor only has one?

And how do you kick off your contribution to the project? Do you have to sign up somewhere and install an app? Or is there specific hardware required?

And obtaining a girl is easy...it's just the right one, and making it work that is the hard part. Chin up, smile, and nice shoes is a great way to start...

Tell us a little about the computer you are using and we can guide you through what version of the folding@home software you might want to install. We would want to know about your processor, video card, ram, power supply, any overclock, etc.

Also, do you have a PS3?

My laptop is just basically a stock Inspiron 9300 with a Pentium M 1.73, NVidia GO 6800, upgraded to 2GB RAM, nothing special. I'm probably going to upgrade soon, but I'm leaning towards sticking with a laptop, but I'm curious as to how that choice would affect this project.

I also noticed that the PS3 can contribute. How does that work? Is there an FAQ on all this stuff somewhere, or do you guys not mid answering these typical elementary questions? :)

Don't mind at all.....

I don't have a PS3, but my understanding is you can just download the client from the PS3 and away you go.

Will it bog down your current workload, or just use what's available in the midst of downtime?

Yep.. there is a link to it right on the XMB. Its kinda like running another program or screen saver... have to exit it to be able to do anything else. Then can set it to start up after a certain amount of idle time on the XMB

on computer?

On the computer it is set to the lowest priority. So if another program requests CPU/GPU cycles the F@H program gets bumped back. You will not notice at all (and if you do and the mili second longer that it takes to launch firefox get you bent out of shape ......)

You just want to make sure you have a good bit of RAM. These clients are not hogs by any means... but running them constant means that your have a smaller amount for the rest of the programs to use.

Kendrak - I don't know, I'm absolutely clueless about this, and learning from what you cats tell me.

So no matter what I'm using (sure, more RAM for the extra task & subtasks) I could install a/the app and contribute? Are there different apps? If so, why?

Different clients for Different computers:

Standard client - uses one core, good for single core systems or multi core systems that you want to control how many cores are used (by using 1-3 clients)

SMP client - Will used up to 4 cores at a time, great for faster duel and any quadcore.

GPU client - This is use on the video card and not the CPU, it does need some CPU power to feed it though.

You can run any combination of these, just make sure that the WU will be done before their dealines expire.

A little elaboration:

The standard client is the original(ish) and most stable client for the computer. The dealines for this client are in the realm of 20-30 days for a work unit. The longer time and wider variety of hardware able to run this client allow them to offer lower points for your output on this client. The science of folding is still there.

The SMP client, as has been mentioned can utilize a multi core computer. This client is in beta right now and can been somewhat finicky. Getting this client to run well is not a horrible task, but it can be frustrating. The deadlines for work are more in the realm of 3-4 days I believe. Preferred deadlines are shorter, as in 2-3 days usually. You are rewarded for hooking this client to good hardware by higher point values in the realm of 1500-2500 points per work unit vs. a couple hundred for the standard.

I know next to nothing about GPU folding.

The same goes for PS3.

Preferred deadlines-I thought I might explain that real quick too. The deadline for a project is the point where, once finished if you have passed the deadline you get no points for your work. The preferred deadline is the point where the servers re-distribute the work unit you are working on. This could mean 2 computers are working on the same unit, just in case you don't get yours done, there is a backup. We aim to meet preferred deadlines because the contribution to science is better if the second guy gets a new work unit, not another chance to do the one you are working on.

enough rambling, i should get to work.

I got started on writing up a new howto/FAQ on the PS3 but there's still a bit to do. The howto is in good enough shape to get you started though.

Edit: I'll get this finished up this weekend.
