Folding Project for High School Class

Hey folks.

I teach high school Biology and we're studying proteins and the like right. I'm trying to get together a little class project and help out Folding@Home at the same time. I have 3 PCs that were recently donated to the school, so I'm going to be setting them up with F@H. All three have the E6400, 2.13, 2M Core Duo - Conroe processor and 1GB PC2 5300. They all also have WinXP Pro.

What would be the best way to set these up to be nothing but Folding machines? The school will allow me to spend around $150 TOTAL to do whatever to them. I know I can get another GB of RAM each but will that matter? Again, these guys will be sitting on a counter, used only for F@H.

Also, is there anything I can specifically do with the software to get the most Folding potential out of these computers?

Any help would appreciated. Thanks!

If the Win XP install isnt too messed up on them, just install the client and let it go. Standard SMP should run fine.

If the windows install is full of garbage from the previous owners, install linux and the linux client. SMP on this as well.

I don't think you need to do a thing unless you can find a killer deal on q6600s for $50 each and the system will support them.

Agreed - keep it simple. Follow the SMP install guide, get a passkey, and go. I highly doubt you will need more memory for dual cores.

run smp on them and spend the $150 on the best used nvidia card / power supply you can find if any of them have a pci express slot.

I know some one is selling a 9800gt in the FS section for $30. I'm sure you could find a gtx260 and psu in your budget which should put out some good ppd.

Hey, guys thanks SO much for the info. I have the SMP Client running on the machines, but am unable to get HFM.NET to run. I know the install guide says its just to monitor the client, but its not needed right?

HFM is not needed. It is a 3rd party application that is used to monitor FAH installations.

Is there software out there that will show the progress graphically like the standard client does? I'm trying to put something visual up that my students can see. The black and white list of steps completed shows progress, but I'm working with sophomores in HS and they need a visual. :)

I Like kendraks idea of buying one or two q6600 used with the money.

Hey guys. I've downloaded and installed the v7 client. It ran the first WU perfectly, but now won't connect to send it. Also, another of the computers running the SMP Client won't connect to the servers to get the WU either. Is there an issue with Stanford at this time? Or is there something in the clients themselves I need to look at? I just used the default setups and didn't change anything...

My guess would be its a network issue on your end. Chances are if where you teach is anything like where I went to HS 2 years ago, they have the place locked like Ft. Knox (which i whistle innocently about)

Thanks guys. I've gone through the forum and am gonna have the schools IT guys hopefully open some stuff up for me. Not sure if they will, but hey, its worth a shot.

I have no idea how your network is setup but I had the same issues with the borg systems at my work. Worked and then didn't. After I checked all the permissions and proxy settings to no avail, I just went to a website like http://www.whatismyip.com/ and copied the address exactly. Then, I pasted it into the proxy settings of the client and didn't have any issues after. It was a simple address issue, I guess. They had changed something on our end during an update and it had changed. I ran in circles for a couple of days and it was something really simple.

Good luck.

The g/f runs computer club at the school she teaches at. Which in reality means I run computer club :p

I brought up the idea of trying to do this with her. The first meeting shes gonna give it a try.
