is it ok for my processor to be running at 70 deg C?

i've been folding on my laptop for a while, but i was always worried about heat. i've had my laptop burn my hands a couple times.

i have a... dell inspiron 600m w/ 1.4ghz and 512mb of ram...

70 Degree C is a bit hot. I would and have lowered the percentage of CPU load that FAH will use on one of my laptops. Try different percentages and find one that works for you and your laptop.

I run my Latitude D600 100% 24/7. She only runs at 50c though. 70 might be a bit too hot. So yeah, might wanna try what Hito said, set it to 75% or so and check difference in temp.

I wouldn't want it to run that hot. It would definitely be a good idea to set the processor usage lower than 100%. As others have said, play with it a bit and see what usage works the best for you. I'd bet it wouldn't be above 75%, though.

get a laptop cooling pad... or make your own so some air gets under that thing.. should help some... and make sure its not sitting on your lap

Ahh run it wide open. Mine is still kicking...kinda...

If you do do that, make sure you keep some hamburgers and buns around... nothing like a good barbecue while you're folding. :D

that's too hot.

i know that someone out there had/has a piece of software to run your laptop fan(s) at full speed though, that should reduce your temps. i'm looking for it now, but so far no luck :(

This is the software that I use:

That is if your laptop has fans / or working fans.
dude, what is up with you? you feeling okay? and yes, it does have a fan.

to the original Poster: at any rate, here's an article detailing how you can clean all the orifices of your laptop (i.e. get all the dust out). i started it on page 3 because the first two pages are useless.

and HERE is the software i was looking for -- "SpeedFan" -- monitors voltage, HDD, fan speed, and a bunch of stuff. It also lets you change your fan speeds, so you can run your fan(s) at max all the time -- should help with cooling.

after you've cleaned/upped your fan speeds, tell us what the temperature is with FAH at 100%!

Nothing is up with me :p

The two laptops i have at home, neither have fans inside of them...

So if you have fans that helps.. if not.. then it doesnt...

Still helps to get one of the "cool" pad things to lift it a little off the desk and let some air get around the beasties too

I think he was just suggesting a broken part. I had a old Toshiba Satellite that the fan went out on. It worked just fine passively but it got hot as the blazes. If cleaning it out doesn't help and the fan isn't putting out any air, then there might be a mechanical problem too, in addition to dust and the usual suspects of laptop heat. :D

fixed linky.

just off a spare PSU right now, with the little wire trix to make it a test PSU

I've got the antec version of those, but you could always wire a few little 80mm's off the usb line, similar to the antec usb desk fan. It pushes just enough air to be useful.

I forgot where I saw it, but someone jurry rigged a home-made version with some 40's i think.... lemme find linky.

i was reading in some other forum (while i was googling for the software about it) and it seemed the general consensus was the fans wouldn't push enough air.

why not just get some 40mm fans and hotwire those via usb (i have no idea how to do this though, p[h]ant0m?)? they'll push more air. if we can get air speed and movement facotred in, i gauarantee they will push more.

and , if you're not running any other USB devices, couldn't you just up the voltage to the USB? keke, that'd be awesome.

The USB thing was just a cheap idea. Those little fans and stuff are all powered off the USB ports. Now, I'm not an electrician, but you could possibly bastardize a powered USB hub and maybe use something like that, unless you trust a super cheap PSU. Just a thought.

that's extreme dude, but i don't get part of it. specifically in the plywood model -- how does that help his laptop stay cool? shouldn't it be mounted inside the plywood thing and let the (i'm assuming exhaust) fans drag the hot air out?

like shouldn't it be on erasers inside the plywood fan mount?

Any fan blowing on a laptop helps out quite a bit. I've got a 900MHz laptop that I point a little room fan at on hot days and in the winter I put it in a spare bedroom that stays about 60 degres F. Some old 1GHz laptops at work occasionally lock up if I let them fold for several days straight...I'd fix that by blowing some air their way if I could, but what the hell, they're old!

i think it might just be my room...

right now, i'm at a friend's place and it's cooler here. my laptop's running at 54 deg C @ 75% cpu usage.

before when i said my laptop was running at 70 deg, it was running at 75% as well.

i'll try cleaning it on the weekend. it doesn't look too bad though...

oh yeah, we're so stupid, we all forgot:

what are your ambient temps?

wowwww

so i took the advice of Carnival Forces and cleaned the fan and openings... and wow, i can't believe what i found.

so i've had my laptop for a year and a half, so it's been a while. never been dusted out before. so i turn off my computer, dust it, turn it back on, and my fan doesn't spin. i didn't know what to do, so i said... heck, i've always wanted to take this thing apart and see the insides. so i did and looked at the fan, and there was a dust ball sticking out. and wow it was the most condensed dust ball ever. and so i took it off. and dang, my computer runs at 45 deg C max on 75% folding.... so i'm gonna up it to 100%. thanks guys!!!

np, 100% folding is always a good thing :)

now, to show your gratitude, you could set the username to: Carnival_Forces and (of course) the team # to 33 ;)
