id like to fold, but all i have is my laptop (core 2 duo 1.83)

is that enough to do anything at all?

It has plenty of power but I don't think most laptop cooling can handle 100% load 24/7. I tried folding on my wife's Core Duo laptop and it was scorching hot all of the time so I gave up. It was producing well though.

LOL!! unlike you, I have 6 laptops folding 24/7 for a few months and they are running fine. The key is to make sure there is some airflow on the side (don't block the side vents).

However, it depends on which laptop. My stack are all business-quality ones and it's possible the domestic versions might not be able to cope. But you can adjust the load % to reduce the heat.

 
I have a dell, so I use i8kfangui to crank the fans to full speed all the time when I fold. Works perfectly. :)

Yeah, there's a difference between what you're doing and me having to hear my wife complain about her burning hot laptop every day. :p



 
i have a dell m1210. i have had it at full load for around 12 hours b4, and it became hot, but it was nothing bad (i keep it on my desk all the time)

so im guessing its good enuf to do some folding

about that, can i stop it midway? for example, when i take it to class (every few days) will i be able to stop the folding for an hour or two, so it doesnt run out my battery life>

sorry, im a folding noob :p

Yeah, you can configure FAH to stop folding when the computer is on battery power.

if im not mistaken, i would follow the instructions for "Multiple CPU/ Hyperthreading setup guide" to take advantage of the dual core, right?
 
i setup one of the clients, but i keep on getting this error:

could not connect to work server
error: attempt #n to get work failed, and no other work to do.
waiting before retry

could this be because im on a university network? i have no proxy settings that i know of
 
If you want to use the SMP client, there should be a better FAQ here.

I've been running the standard console on one core of my laptop for a while now (plus generally Visual Studio on the other core....it gets up around 140F when running that , but I'm in some fairly warm rooms, so overall the heat isn't all that unexpected, and certainly nothing to worry about.

Edit: that may be a university error, but let it try a few more times....sometimes the client has issues connecting immediately

 
odd it still is having trouble getting the units :(

is there a certain port or sometihng for the client?

i dont think that would matter, as i can use torrents and stuff with no issue lol
 
When you set up the client, did you tell it NOT to use Internet Explorer settings?


 
Also it could well be your firewall is blocking the download of work.
Which firewall are you running ??

As a small comfort to you, I have used my Inspirion 9300 for folding/UD/WCG for the last 3 years now. No issues have been had. I did put a small box underneath the back of the system in the center to give it an extra half inch clearance for air flow. I also cleaned it about every 3 months with air.
 
I've had a couple of other laptops borged before. However, due to the incompetence of the owner, they were constantly having to have the drive formatted and the OS reinstalled. I gave up on the laptops and his desktop system since it wasn't worth my time to have to reborg the damn things every week or two.

I just installed WCG on my sister's laptop the other night. It's a 1.73Ghz Core2Duo and it was chewing through WUs like nothing and didn't even seem to heat up hardly. She had brought it over for me to do some work on it so I borged it at the same time. She ended up leaving it here as I had to head out before everything was done on it and she didn't come back that night to pick it up. After more than 24 hours straight running WCG with both cores at 100%, I couldn't really tell that it was any hotter than usual and I didn't hear noise from the fans.

The only problem I've ever possibly run into is heat and all I've ever had to do was turn down the processor usage to something other than 100%. Sometimes it takes a bit of work but you should be able to find a percentage that you are comfortable with if it seems to be getting a little warm for your tastes.

 
Definately change the CPU percent down to somerthing like 70% so that the laptop is not so hot. Also I'd recommend using the standard console client not the SMP version. The SMP version will probably freak out when you change wireless connections, since it doesn't like things happening to the network connection.
 
oops forgot to check this lol. i am using a single standard console client for now, trying to get this to work

only changes were cpu usage to 90, allow receipt of work assignments to no, req work without deadlines to yes (not gonna run 24/7).

i dont run a firewall. all i have is nod32 for antivirus.

EDIT: i retried it with same settings, and it seems to work now lol

as for stopping the folding, is it alright just to close the console window to shut down the client, or is there something else i am supposed to do

edit2: i got it up and running using two console clients (set to 80% cpu each), however, it seems that one core is nearly 100% used, while the other is closer to 50%. is that normal? i have the -local flags on each client, and i set the machine IDs correctly.
 
For closing, I use ctrl+c - it's a fairly standard program shut down combo, and it seems to be consistent in allowing the logs to be written for checkpoints or whatever.

As for the CPU usage, dont forget to set the affinity on the processes to seperate CPUs. I recommend a program like SMP Seesaw, but you can change it in the Task Manager as well. The folding things are FAHxxx-Console.exe and FahCore_xx.exe. On this note, make sure you set the right core affinity to correspond to its console window.
